What Should They Do? Depictions of Ribāṭ and Murābiṭūn in Early Islamic Ifrīqiya

    No full text
What was ribāṭ in early Islamic Ifrīqiya and what was its primary function? The answer often differs depending on the sources that are used, and whether they focus on the building or the institution more generally. Rather than approaching the question through either of these aspects, this study will consider the expectations, reflected in textual sources, about the behavior of the murābiṭūn, or the men who inhabited them. Analyzing expectations about the character of the murābiṭūn and the activities carried out in the ribāṭ offers an insight into how the writer of the text viewed the institution, including its function and significance in early Islamic society. By comparing the expectations reflected in various texts, it is also possible to recognize different views of the ribāṭ building and institution and to relate these to the historical context or the perspective of the writer. The analysis in this study will focus on the ribāṭ in the Ifrīqiyan tradition but will relate some of the developments to the significance of the institution in the wider Islamic Empire and its intellectual tradition

Sharia Integration in Hospital Service: Implementation of Purity and Ikhtilāṭ Aspect

    No full text
The application of sharia hospitals has implications for improving services. Two standards must be met, including purity and avoidance of ikhtilāṭ. However, this effort requires a large amount of money, affecting the principle of simple, fast and inexpensive service. The findings indicate that patients and their families benefit from adopting purity standards and avoiding ikhtilāṭ. Implementation of standard purity, however, does not fully have adequate management to ensure standard compliance. Meanwhile, implementing ikhtilāṭ avoidance standards is strongly influenced by the availability of resources and infrastructure. However, under certain conditions, the application of these standards is neglected. Implications This study emphasizes the need for detailed management and guidelines in applying these standards

‘Spirits of the Dead’ or ‘Necromancers’? The eṭemmū in an Old Assyrian Letter Reinterpreted in Light of Hebrew ’ōbôt, yidde‘ōnîm, and ’iṭṭîm

    No full text
The Old Assyrian archive from Kanesh, dated to ca. 1950–1850 BCE, has yielded a letter that refers to the consultation of the spirits of the dead (eṭemmū), thus making it the world’s oldest actual attestation of necromancy. However, whereas the immediate context mentions the šā’ilātum, ‘the women dream interpreters’, and the bāriātum, ‘the women omen interpreters’, a necromantic professional is lacking in relation to the questioning of the eṭemmū. Earlier studies have explained this discrepancy by suggesting that necromancy was part of the skill set of the aforementioned female professionals, or that the communication with the spirits happened directly, without the immediate involvement of a skilled specialist. The present article rather argues that the term eṭemmu, ‘spirit of the dead’, had a wider semantic range than hitherto held. In rare cases, it could also designate a necromancer. This proposal is supported by an identical semantic phenomenon in another ancient Semitic language. The biblical Hebrew terms ʼōbôt and yidde‘ōnîm not only refer to the spirits of the dead but also to necromancers. The same might be argued for the apparent Hebrew cognate of Akkadian eṭemmū, the hapax legomenon ’iṭṭîm in Isaiah 19:3. On the strength of the findings presented in this study, it is concluded that the fleeting blending of the spirit with the necromancer lies at the heart of this semantic merger

Embodying the Spirit (meyppāṭu): A puttiṇai Perspective

    No full text
I explain the early Tamil idea of meyppāṭu as a kind of action, which consists of embodying the spirit, and show how it manifests itself in ordinary emotional experience, in love at first sight, in emoting in theatre, and in spirit possession. The analytical tool I employ is the concept of mūviṭam, or the personaic triad, the central concept in the theory called puttiṇai. Using this tool, I outline the idea of meyppāṭu in the primal community, in the state society, and also in the industrialist state, and show how the understanding of meyppāṭu in the primal world (what I have called viḻuttiṇai) ensured a love-based lifeway necessary for the wellbeing of the people and all the beings other than humans that were also part of that world, and why this understanding is necessary today to end the present Anthropocenic industrialist lifeway, which has brought humans and beings other than humans to the brink of disaster

    No full text
In Saudi Arabia, there is a religious police, otherwise known as muṭawiʿīn, whose purpose is to strengthen public morals in accordance with the norms of the Islamic religion, while arresting or assisting in the detention of individuals whose behavior violates Islamic principles and values. The goals and objectives of the institution seem to benefit society, but the muṭawiʿīn began to abuse their powers by arresting people unnecessarily and using physical violence against them. The muṭawiʿīn received a lot of criticism in international and domestic society for the crimes they commit, such as: assaulting women for wearing make-up or not wearing appropriate clothing, persecuting people, persecuting people of other religions, etc. The operating principles of the muṭawiʿīn institution have changed radically since 2016, when the institution's activities were significantly restricted. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the reasons for the restriction of muṭawiʿīn activities by analyzing international human rights decrees, Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 project goals, and Western and Saudi media articles. Content analysis method is used. The tasks of the thesis are: to present the concepts of good and evil in Islam and the importance of these concepts for the activities of muṭawiʿīn. The second task is to explain what muṭawiʿīn is and why its principles of operation are considered controversial and unacceptable in Saudi Arabia and internationally. The third is to examine what domestic and international reasons led to the limitation of religious police activities. And the fourth is to explain how the reasons investigated in the study determined the specifics of muṭawiʿīn's activities since 2016. The study has revealed that after the international and domestic criticism, in 2016, the characteristics of their activities have changed drastically. The main reasons why it was decided to change the specifics are: domestic criticism from Saudis, project “Vision 2030”, media from Western countries and international human right organization and their criticism to muṭawiʿīn activities
