The α1D-adrenoreceptor antagonist BMY 7378 reverses cardiac hypertrophy in spontaneously hypertensive rats.
Objective:
The α1D-adrenoreceptor (α1D-AR) is involved in angiotensin II-induced vascular remodeling and hypertension. Whether α1D-AR plays a role in hypertension-associated cardiac hypertrophy is unclear. Here we investigated effects of BMY 7378, a selective α1D-AR antagonist, on cardiac status in aged spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).
Methods:
Male SHR were studied during the phase of developing hypertension (5 and 10 weeks old) and once hypertension was established (20 and 30 weeks old) to assess the evolution of cardiac hypertrophy. Age-matched WKY rats were studied as controls. Thirty-week-old SHR were treated for 4 weeks with BMY 7378 (10 mg/kg per day, o.a.), or captopril (angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor, 40 mg/kg per day, o.a.) (as a positive control). Blood pressure and cardiac function were measured in vivo, cardiac hypertrophy by histology, and α1D-AR protein expression by immunofluorescence.
Results:
By 30 weeks of age, SHR exhibited significant hypertension and cardiac hypertrophy. BMY 7378 and captopril decreased blood pressure and improved hemodynamic parameters and cardiac function in treated SHR vs. untreated SHR (P < 0.05). Histology showed increased cardiomyocyte size, fibrosis, and left ventricular hypertrophy in SHR hearts. BMY 7378 ameliorated fibrosis and cardiac hypertrophy, but had no effect on cardiomyocyte size in SHR. Effects of BMY 7378 were associated with increased α1D-AR protein expression in SHR.
Conclusion:
Our data indicate that pharmacological antagonism of α1D-AR reduces blood pressure and associated cardiac hypertrophy in aged SHR. These findings suggest that the α1D-AR plays a pathophysiological role in the development of hypertension and cardiac target organ damage in SHR
Obligate requirement of salicylic acid for short-day induction of flowering in a new duckweed, Wolffiella hyalina 7378
Wolffiella hyalina 7378, a member of the Lemnaceae, does not flower in the basal media of Bonner-Devirian, Hoagland, Hutner (½ strength), M medium of Hillman or Pirson-Seidel under either long or short day photoperiodic regimes. Well-known chelating agents, such as EDTA, EDDHA and 8-hydroxyquinoline, which have been shown to significantly influence flowering in other members of the Lemnaceae, also do not show any effect in this strain. It is, however, noteworthy that W. hyalina 7378 flowers profusely under a short-day photoperiodic schedule of 8 h light and 16 h darkness provided that 10-5 m salicylic acid is supplemented to modified Bonner and Devirian medium. The critical daylength of W. hyalina 7378 is 13 h. Further, at least two inductive photocycles are required for initiation of flowering. As to the mechanism of SA action, it appears that SA effect on flowering is hormonal in nature rather than due to chelation of metal ions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
The Involvement of the Intergeniculate Leaflet in the Potentiation of Photic Phase Shifts by the 5-HT1A Mixed Agonist/Antagonist BMY 7378
The suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) is the master circadian pacemaker. Photic stimuli conveyed by fibers innervating the SCN can synchronize the master clock with the environment. The serotonin (5-HT) 1A mixed agonist/antagonist BMY 7378 can enhance the magnitude of these changes, which could help realign the circadian rhythms of individuals whose rhythms have become desynchronized. Direct administration of BMY 7378 to the SCN is not sufficient to enhance phase shift to light. The intergeniculate leaflet (IGL) like the SCN receives both direct retinal input and serotonergic innervation; therefore BMY 7378 may be exerting its influence through the IGL. Radio frequency lesion of the IGL and neurotoxic lesion of the 5-HT fibers innervating the IGL both result in phase shift to light which are not significantly larger than controls, indicating that both are necessary for BMY 7378 to potentiate photic phase shifts

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
