Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Extension of the Salmonella detection method UNE-EN ISO 6579:2003
Motivation: The food sector is in a continuous fight against infectious diseases, among which the most relevant is the bacteria Salmonella. The disease it causes is called Salmonellosis, and it can affect both animals and humans. Salmonellosis causes big losses in the food sector, since it poses a risk to public health, so it is important control it. For this reason, laboratories carry out routinary food quality controls to ensure the innocuity of the food analized. There are several methods whose objective is to detect efficiently the presence Salmonella bacteria in food. The one we have used in the laboratory is a conventional method whose reglament is established in UNE-EN ISO 6579:2003. The goal of the project is to expand the detection method of Salmonella ISO 6579, in order to confirm that this detection method can ben used efficiently in the tested products.Methods: The ISO 6579:2003 is an horizontal method that consists of a pre-enrichment phase of the test sample in a nonselective liquid medium, followed by a selective enrichment phase, followed by a final phase in which any possible Salmonella colonies are grown in selective, solid culture media. In this way it is posible to confirm or rule out the presence of colonies, and carry out their characterization by biochemical and serological tests. Eight different foods that have not been validated before in our laboratory were artificially contaminated with 10 UFC Salmonella. The limit of detection and the influence of the presence of other microorganisms were both analized.Results: Biochemical and serological confirmation tests have determined the presence of Salmonella in all food products evaluated for the established detection limit. We have also verified that the presence of accompanying flora does not influence the process of Salmonella detection.Conclusions: Since it has been possible to detect the presence of Salmonella under the established detection limit, and with the presence of accompanying flora, it can be concluded that the ISO 6579 methodology is effective in the evaluated foods. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Identification of Pathogenic Bacterial Contamination of Salmonella sp. in Fishery Products Using SNI ISO 6579:2015
Indonesia is the largest archipelagic and maritime country in the tropical region with quite large potential for exploiting marine resources, especially in the fisheries sector. Quite a large amount of fishery products are marketed through modern markets and traditional markets in the form of fresh or frozen fish. Poor sanitation and hygiene in the processing and marketing of fishery products often lead to the spread of harmful bacteria, including Salmonella sp. This research aimed to detect Salmonella sp. contamination on five samples of fishery products, namely milkfish, tuna, catfish, shrimp and frog legs using the SNI ISO 6579:2015 method. The results showed that initial enrichment and selective media isolation detected Salmonella sp. in some samples, but biochemical tests ultimately confirmed that all samples were negative. Salmonella carriage and change in serovar distribution in broiler giblets at slaughterhouse level in Turkiye: first report using ISO 6579-1:2017 and ISO 6579-3:2014
ABSTRACT: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and serovar distribution of salmonellae in liver, heart, and spleen (LHS) and gizzard (G) of slaughtered broilers. For this, a total of 60 sample units, comprised of 30 LHS and 30 G collected from 3 slaughterhouses, were analysed by reference methods for detection and serotyping as revised ISO 6579-1:2017 and ISO 6579-3:2014, respectively. Also, Salmonella-specific real-time PCR (Salm-PCR) was used for species confirmation, while Salmonella Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) and Salmonella Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) specific real-time PCR (SE/ST-PCR) was evaluated to determine its efficiency for rapid detection of the serovars mandated in current legal regulations compared to standard serotyping. All LHS (100%–30/30) and 90% (27/30) of G samples harbored Salmonella with an overall prevalence of 95% (57/60) in samples examined, where all isolates were confirmed as Salmonella by Salm-PCR. The most prevalent serovar in broiler giblets was S. Virchow (80.70%–46/57) followed by S. Enteritidis (19.30%–11/57). SE/ST-PCR (%17.54–10/57) could not detect one G isolate, which was serotyped as S. Enteritidis by standard serotyping. High relative accuracy (98.25%), sensitivity (100%) and specificity (100%), and agreement between methods (κ: 0.94) verified SE/ST-PCR's potential to be used as an alternative in rapid detection of S. Enteritidis and S. Typhimurium. Data on high Salmonella prevalence in broiler giblets of slaughterhouse origin, and detection of the pathogen by the implementation of all requirements indicated in the revised ISO 6579-1:2017 standard method, enabling the determination of actual prevalence in the samples with high sensitivity and specificity is of significance for public health. Additionally, identification of S. Virchow as the dominant serovar followed by S. Enteritidis with a relatively lower prevalence, and absence of S. Typhimurium in broiler giblets are important findings for Turkiye. This up to date data, obtained by strict application of ISO 6579-3:2014 procedures, indicated a shift in circulating serovars in the broiler industry. The objective findings in this study would bring awareness to national/international literature, and may be of use in future improvements in legal regulations
