    Three binary millisecond pulsars in NGC 6266

    We present rotational and astrometric parameters of three millisecond pulsars located near the center of the globular cluster NGC 6266 (M62), resulting from timing observations with the Parkes radio telescope. Their accelerations toward the cluster center yield values of the cluster central density and mass-to-light ratio consistent with those derived from optical data. The three pulsars are in binary systems. One (spin period P = 5.24 ms) is in a 3.5 day orbit around a companion of minimum mass 0.2 M-circle dot. The other two millisecond pulsars (P = 3.59 and 3.81 ms) have shorter orbital periods (3.4 and 5.0 hr) and lighter companions (minimum masses of 0.12 and 0.07 M-circle dot, respectively). The pulsar in the closest system is the fifth member of an emerging class of millisecond pulsars displaying irregular radio eclipses and having a relatively massive companion. This system is a good candidate for optical identification of the companion star. The lack of known isolated pulsars in NGC 6266 is also discussed

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Biomedical engineering and medical informatics are challenging and rapidly growing areas. Applications of information technology in these areas are of paramount importance. The aim of the first ITBAM conference was to bring together scientists, researchers and practitioners from different disciplines (mathematics, bioinformatics, biology, medicine, biomedical engineering and computer science) having such common interests. We hope that ITBAM conferences will provide opportunities for fruitful discussions between all attendees and provide a platform where participants can exchange their most recent results, identify future directions and challenges, initiate possible collaborative research and system development, and develop common languages for solving problems in the realm of biomedical engineering, bioinformatics and medical informatics. The importance of computer-aided diagnosis and therapy has drawn more and more attention worldwide and laid the foundation for modern medicine with excellent potential for promising applications such as telemedicine, Web-based healthcare and analysis of genetic information. For this conference, after a peer-review process, we finally selected 13 long papers and 8 short papers that are now published in this volume. They are divided in to the following groups: workflow management and database; decision support and data management in biomedicine; medical data modelling and information retrieval; data mining in bioinformatics; knowledge representation and data management in bioinformatics; biological data and signal processing. The papers show how broad the spectrum of topics in applications of information technology to biomedical engineering and medical informatics is. The editors would like to thank all the participants for their high-quality contributions and Springer for publishing the proceedings of this conference.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     The dynamical state and blue straggler population of the globular cluster NGC 6266 (M62)

    We have used a proper combination of multiband high-resolution {it HST-WFPC2} and wide-field ground based observations to image the galactic globular cluster NGC 6266 (M62). The extensive photometric data set allows us to determine the center of gravity and to construct the most extended radial profile ever published for this cluster including, for the first time, detailed star counts in the very inner region. The star density profile is well reproduced by a standard King model with an extended core (sim19sim 19'') and a modest value of the concentration parameter (c=1.5c=1.5), indicating that the cluster has not-yet experienced core collapse. The millisecond pulsar population (whose members are all in binary systems) and the X-ray emitting population (more than 50 sources within the cluster half mass radius) suggest that NGC 6266 is in a dynamical phase particularly active in generating binaries through dynamical encounters. UV observations of the central region have been used to probe the population of blue straggler stars, whose origin might be also affected by dynamical interactions. The comparison with other globular clusters observed with a similar strategy shows that the blue straggler content in NGC 6266 is relatively low, suggesting that the formation channel that produces binary systems hosting neutron stars or white dwarfs is not effective in significantly increasing the blue straggler population. Moreover, an anticorrelation between millisecond pulsar content and blue straggler specific frequency in globular cluster seems emerging with increasing evidence
