(Table 1) Grain size and color of sediments at DSDP Core 92-599-3

    No full text
Size analyses were performed on pelagic sediments from Core 599-3, which exhibited paleontologic and lithologic evidence of reworking. The results show that darker, transported layers above sharp contacts are 0.33 phi coarser than the underlying lighter, in situ layers. The reworking is of unknown origin, but it coincides with periods of enhanced bottom currents and heightened tectonic activity during the latest Miocene

In the context of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs), the study of blazars holds significant importance due to their high variability across multiple wavelengths. This study investigates the multifrequency variability of the blazar TON 599 (z = 0.725), classified as a Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar. Through extensive monitoring of TON 599 by various telescopes, a substantial database has been accumulated, providing insights into its behavior at different wavelengths. In this work, we examine the variability of the gamma-ray flux (0.1 - 300 GeV), X-rays (0.2 - 10 KeV), optical continuum (3000 Å), the Mg II λ2798 Å emission line, optical polarization, and 1 mm emissions. Cross-correlation analysis is employed to explore the relationships between these emissions. Our findings reveal quasisimultaneous behavior and co-spatial origins for the optical emissions, suggesting that the seed photon emission region is shared with the optical emitting region. This implies that the gamma-ray emission in TON 599 is a result of the Synchrotron Self-Compton mechanism. Furthermore, a correlation is observed between the optical emissions and the Mg II λ2798 Å emission line, indicating the presence of ionized material influenced by synchrotron radiation from the jet. Our study goes beyond previous research by using various cross-correlation methods and covering different frequency bands and periods. This work reveals that the observed luminosity relationship departs from the expected behavior for the BLR in a radio-quiet object. Therefore, this object’s dominant source of variability is the jet, rather than the accretion disk. In summary, this study provides valuable insights into the multifrequency variability of the blazar TON 599. These findings contribute to our understanding of AGNs and provide implications for future studies.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

ΔOD calculations were as described in <a href="http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0001834#s4" target="_blank">Methods</a>. A black star signifies p<0.035 when compared to AChE586-599. (B) Temporal pattern of the surfactant properties for AChE586-599 and AChE586-599 mutants. The peptides shown are representatives of the different surfactant properties observed. A black star signifies p<0.05 when compared to the same peptide after 2 min at neutral pH. (C) Surfactant properties for AChE586-599 and all AChE586-599 mutants (50 µM). The properties are divided into 2 categories: surfactant activity dependent on pH (depicted by subtracting the value at acidic pH to the value at neutral pH after 2 min) and stability of the surfactant activity (indicated by stability or decay of the OD signal). The mutation within AChE586-599 is indicated in bold and italics. The peptides with unstable surfactant activity are indicated by grey boxes. ‘*’ indicates peptides which activity remains stable over the time course, albeit one time point. The activity for the mutant peptides is shown as fold ratio of AChE586-599 activity (e.g. ‘1’ represents equal value to AChE586-599).</p

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
