After much discussion in the community, Alex Clark, Joe Quinn, J. Worth Baker and Howdy Wilcox, prominent leaders in the city, met one day in February 1957 and created a framework for governance of the 500 Festival. Modeling the structure after the race itself, they created a 33-member board of directors. In only 65 days, the 500 Festival debuted. The first 500 Festival consisted of a parade and a gala ball the night before the race.
