Characterization of the Self-Healing Mechanism of VHB 4910
AbstractSelf-healing materials have been heavily studied because of its ability to extend the service life of materials. However, current self-healing materials with strong mechanical property requires energy input to trigger the healing process while the materials with autonomous self-healing ability are not tough enough for practical applications. Surprisingly, we found a commercial material, VHB 4910, compromising a strong mechanical property as elastomers and rapid self-healing ability as hydrogels. We confirmed the self-healing ability of VHB 4910 with tensile tests. Raman and infrared spectra illustrate the bonding structure of this material. X-ray diffraction pattern shows an amorphous inner structure of this material. We confirmed that both hydrogen bonding and chain diffusion process contributed to the self-healing ability
A comprehensive characterization of the electro-mechanically coupled properties of VHB 4910 polymer
An illustrative documentation of some standard experimental tests of electro-active VHB 4910 polymer under application of purely mechanical and electro-mechanically coupled loadings is presented. VHB 4910 is a very soft polymer that has potential applications as an electro-active polymer in the production of different types of actuators and sensors. The time-dependent viscoelastic phenomenon is ideal in polymers. Therefore, experiments with electro-mechanically coupled loads were conducted considering some standard tests that were usually used for a viscoelastic polymeric material characterization, i.e. loading-unloading tests, single-step relaxation tests, and multi-step relaxation tests. In all experimental cases, the polymer samples were pre-stretched up to several hundred per cent to make them thin enough initially so that the application of the electro-mechanically coupled load can show its effect to a larger extend. The pre-stretched samples were then subjected to various amounts of mechanical as well as coupled deformations at different strain rates. The data produced from several loading-unloading tests, single-step relaxation tests, and multi-step relaxation tests show that the electric loading has profound effect in the time-dependent behaviour of the electro-active VHB 4910 polymer. The data set either from single-step relaxation tests or multi-step relaxation tests can be used to identify electro-viscoelastic parameters for a suitable constitutive model that can capture electro-mechanically coupled behaviours of VHB 4910. How does static stretching decrease the dielectric constant of VHB 4910 elastomer?
Conference on Electroactive Polymer Actuators and Devices (EAPAD), San Diego, CA, MAR 10-13, 2014Subject to a voltage, dielectric elastomers deform by the effect of Maxwell stress which is depended directly on the dielectric constant of the material. The combination of large strain, soft elastic response and good dielectric properties has established VHB 4910 elastomer as the most used material for dielectric elastomer actuators. However, the effect of stretch on the dielectric constant for this elastomer is much debated topic while controversy results are demonstrated in the literature. The dielectric constant of this material is studied and demonstrated that it decreases slightly or hugely among the stretch but any pertinent response and any physic explications are validated by the scientific community. In this paper, we presented a detail study about dielectric behavior of VHB 4910 elastomer versus a broadband of stretch and temperature. We found that the dielectric constant of this material depends strongly on the stretch following a polynomial law. Among all the explanations of stretch dependence of the dielectric constant of VHB 4910 in the literature: the crystallization, the change of glass transition temperature, the decrease of dipole orientation, the electrostriction effect under stress; and based on our experimental result, we conclude that the decrease of dipole orientation seems the main reason to the drop of dielectric constant of VHB 4910 elastomer versus the stretch.
