Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Activity and abundance of denitrifying bacteria in the subsurface biosphere of diffuse hydrothermal vents of the Juan de Fuca Ridge
Little is known about fixed nitrogen (N) transformation and elimination at diffuse hydrothermal vents where anoxic fluids are mixed with oxygenated crustal seawater prior to discharge. Oceanic N sinks that remove bio-available N ultimately affect chemosynthetic primary productivity in these ecosystems. Using 15N paired isotope techniques, we determined potential rates of fixed N loss pathways (denitrification, anammox) and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) in sulfidic hydrothermal vent fluids discharging from the subsurface at several sites at Axial Volcano and the Endeavour Segment on the Juan de Fuca Ridge. We also measured physico-chemical parameters (i.e., temperature, pH, nutrients, H2S and N2O concentrations) as well as the biodiversity and abundance of chemolithoautotrophic nitrate-reducing, sulfur-oxidizing γ-proteobacteria (SUP05 cluster) using sequence analysis of amplified small subunit ribosomal RNA (16S rRNA) genes in combination with taxon-specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) assays. Denitrification was the dominant N loss pathway in the subsurface biosphere of the Juan de Fuca Ridge, with rates of up to ~1000 nmol N l−1 day−1. In comparison, anammox rates were always 400 Tg N yr−1)

Simulation Modeling of 140 MW CCGT Quality Indicators Based on DIN-VDI 4661 Standard Using Ebsilon® Professional Software
The operational efficiency of mid-capacity (140 MW) Combined Cycle Gas and Steam Power Plants (CCGT) remains underexplored concerning the DIN-VDI 4661 standard, which defines key quality metrics for energy systems. Addressing this gap is crucial for establishing standardized benchmarks to optimize performance and reduce energy losses. Existing studies mainly focus on Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) units outside the 100–180 MW range and often do not explicitly follow DIN-VDI 4661, limiting efficiency comparisons and hindering targeted optimizations. This study simulates a 140 MW CCGT using Ebsilon® Professional software, incorporating DIN-VDI 4661 guidelines to assess eight quality indicators, including thermal efficiency, fuel utilization, and power-to-heat ratio. The model integrates gas and steam turbines, heat recovery, and auxiliary components, with input parameters validated against industry data. Energy balance analysis and sensitivity tests identified loss points. Results show a gas turbine thermal efficiency of 31.39%, steam turbine efficiency of 39.59%, and total system efficiency of 48.42%. However, significant energy losses (52% of input energy) were observed, mainly in gas turbines (87,000 kW) and steam turbines (56,000 kW). These findings highlight the need for design optimizations, such as improving heat recovery and turbine efficiency, to meet DIN-VDI 4661 benchmarks. The operational efficiency of mid-capacity (140 MW) Combined Cycle Gas and Steam Power Plants (CCGT) remains underexplored concerning the DIN-VDI 4661 standard, which defines key quality metrics for energy systems. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Exosomal microRNA-4661-5p-based serum panel as a potential diagnostic biomarker for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma
Currently, a reliable serum biomarker for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has not been established, particularly for early-stage HCC (single tumor < 2 cm). We aimed to investigate diagnostic serum exosomal microRNA (exo-miR) panel for early-stage HCC. Driver oncogenic miR (onco-miR) candidates were selected by integrative analysis of miR expression profiles from three different RNA sequencing datasets of human HCC. Expressions of selected onco-miRs in serum exosome were measured using quantitative real-time PCR. Diagnostic performances of serum exo-miRs for HCC were evaluated in the test cohort (N = 24) and validation cohort (N = 144). Serum exo-miR panels were developed using a logistic regression model, and their diagnostic performance was evaluated. Six promising driver onco-miRs, including miR-25-3p, miR-140-3p, miR-423-3p, miR-1269a, miR-4661-5p, and miR-4746-5p, were identified by integrative analysis of three different RNA sequencing datasets. Among the six candidates, four serum exo-miRs (miR-25-3p, miR-1269a, miR-4661-5p, and miR-4746-5p) showed promising performance in the test cohort with area under the receiving operator curve (AUROC) >0.8. In our validation study, serum exo-miR-4661-5p could diagnose HCC in all stages (AUROC = 0.917), even in early stage (AUROC = 0.923), with a greater accuracy than other candidate serum exo-miRs and serum AFP. The panel composed of exo-miR-4661-5p and exo-miR-4746-5p was identified as the most accurate biomarker for early-stage HCC (AUROC = 0.947, 95% confidence interval = 0.889-0.980, sensitivity = 81.8%, and specificity = 91.7%). In conclusion, exo-miR-4661-5p-based serum panel is a promising diagnostic marker for early-stage HCC
