    BD+43° 3654 – a blue straggler?

    No full text
The astrometric data on the runaway star BD+43° 3654 are consistent with the origin of this O4If star in the center of the Cyg OB2 association, while BD+43° 3654 is younger than the association. To reconcile this discrepancy, we suggest that BD+43° 3654 is a blue straggler formed via a close encounter between two tight massive binaries in the core of Cyg OB2. A possible implication of this suggestion is that the very massive (and therefore apparently very young) stars in Cyg OB2 could be blue stragglers as well. We also suggest that the binary-binary encounter producing BD+43° 3654 might be responsible for ejection of two high-velocity stars (the stripped helium cores of massive stars) – the progenitors of the pulsars B2020+28 and B2021+51

Tissue expression of hsa-microRNA-3654 in male patients with external anogenital warts

Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is common across the world’s population, with millions of new cases reported each year. An increasing number of disorders are being linked to dysregulated microRNA (miRNA) expression, particularly when high-risk human papillomavirus infection is present. Objective To investigate the miR-3654 expression level in male patients with anogenital warts (AGWs) to develop a new patho-physiolological era in the genital wart. Patients and methods A total of 25 male patients with AGWs were consecutively enrolled in this case control study. MiR-3654 expressions in lesional skin and nonlesional skin were detected by quantitative PCR. Results Diseased tissue had a significantly lower median of miR-3654 level than normal healthy skin. There was no significant correlation between diseased tissue miR-3654 level with patient’s age, number of lesions, and average size of lesions. Conclusion It was found that diseased tissue miR-3654 was downregulated in warts compared with normal skin. Given its predicted targets and functions, the current study findings point out that miR-3654 could be a potential disease biomarker and may play a regulatory role in pathogenesis of AGWs

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The Second-Generation PIM Kinase Inhibitor TP-3654 Resensitizes ABCG2-Overexpressing Multidrug-Resistant Cancer Cells to Cytotoxic Anticancer Drugs

    No full text
Human ATP-binding cassette (ABC) subfamily G member 2 (ABCG2) mediates the transport of a wide variety of conventional cytotoxic anticancer drugs and molecular targeted agents. Consequently, the overexpression of ABCG2 in cancer cells is linked to the development of the multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype. TP-3654 is an experimental second-generation inhibitor of PIM kinase that is currently under investigation in clinical trials to treat advanced solid tumors and myelofibrosis. In this study, we discovered that by attenuating the drug transport function of ABCG2, TP-3654 resensitizes ABCG2-overexpressing multidrug-resistant cancer cells to cytotoxic ABCG2 substrate drugs topotecan, SN-38 and mitoxantrone. Moreover, our results indicate that ABCG2 does not mediate resistance to TP-3654 and may not play a major role in the induction of resistance to TP-3654 in cancer patients. Taken together, our findings reveal that TP-3654 is a selective, potent modulator of ABCG2 drug efflux function that may offer an additional combination therapy option for the treatment of multidrug-resistant cancers
