HALOGAS:Extraplanar gas in NGC 3198

    Get PDF

We present the analysis of new, deep Hi observations of the spiral galaxy NGC 3198 as part of the Westerbork Hydrogen Accretion in LOcal GAlaxieS (HALOGAS) survey, with the main aim of investigating the presence, amount, morphology, and kinematics of extraplanar gas. We present models of the Hi observations of NGC 3198. The model that matches best the observed data cube features a thick disk with a scale height of similar to 3 kpc and an Hi mass of about 15% of the total Hi mass; this thick disk also has a decrease in rotation velocity as a function of height (lag) of 7-15 km s(-1) kpc(-1) (though with large uncertainties). This extraplanar gas is detected for the first time in NGC 3198. Radially, this gas appears to extend slightly beyond the actively star-forming body of the galaxy (as traced by the H alpha emission), but it is not more radially extended than the outer, fainter parts of the stellar disk. Compared to previous studies, thanks to the improved sensitivity we trace the rotation curve out to larger radii. We model the rotation curve in the framework of modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) and confirm that, with the allowed distance range we assumed, fit quality is modest in this galaxy, but the new outer parts are explained in a satisfactory way.

Clear, sharp, and well exposed. No. 3198 is a 2-8-2 type, 3160 class A locomotive. Built by Baldwin Locomotive in 1918 as No. 48673

Vergelijkend onderzoek eiwitbepalingen in melk vlgs.

The HALOGAS survey : extraplanar gas in NGC 3198

I present here some results of the HALOGAS (Westerbork Hydrogen Accretion in LOcal GAlaxieS) survey, focussing on the galaxy NGC 3198. The aim of HALOGAS is to investigate the presence, morphology, and kinematics of extraplanar gas. By modelling the observations, for the first time we reveal the presence of extraplanar gas in NGC 3198. The extraplanar gas rotates more slowly with increasing height from the midplane, with a vertical gradient of the order of 10 km s(-1) kpc(-1). I am also briefly discussing the HALOGAS sample as a whole

Finding aid and scans (Click on Additional Files below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3198. Letter, 23 December 1875, of Dr. William E. Hatcher. Writing from New York City to his daughter Mattie Lou in Bowling Green, Kentucky, he mourns his inability to be at home and expresses his affection for her and the family. Also partial letter, 12 January 1876, to William’s wife Ellen from a physician at New York’s Bellevue Hospital, reporting on William’s illness (feared to be meningitis) and promising to provide all possible care for him. Includes data about the letters

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
