No full textวัตถุประสงค์ของงานวิจัยเรื่องนี้ มุ่งที่จะศึกษาความเป็นมาและสภาพการณ์ของเมืองจันทบุรีและเมืองตราดในช่วงสมัยที่อยู่ในความยึดครองของกองทหารฝรั่งเศส ระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2436 ถึง พ.ศ. 2450 โดยแบ่งออกเป็น 3 บท คือ บทที่ 1 เกี่ยวกับความเป็นมาของเมืองจันทบุรี และการยึดครองของฝรั่งเศส บทที่ 2 ว่าด้วยเรื่องการเจรจาและการถอนทหารฝรั่งเศสออกจากเมืองจันทบุรี และบทที่ 3 เกี่ยวกับความเป็นมาของเมืองตราด และการยึดครองของฝรั่งเศส ผลจากการศึกษาพบว่าฝรั่งเศสยึดครองเมืองจันทบุรีก่อนระหว่าง พ.ศ. 2436 ถึง พ.ศ. 2447 หลังจากนั้นจึงยึดครองเมืองตราดแทนจนถึง พ.ศ. 2450 การยึดครองเมืองทั้งสองนี้ก็เพื่อเป็นหลักทรัพย์ค้ำประกันจนกว่าไทยจะปฏิบัติตามสัญญาและอนุสัญญาฉบับลงวันที่ 3 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2436 ซึ่งรัฐบาลไทยทำกับฝรั่งเศสภายหลังวิกฤตการณ์ ร.ศ. 112 และจนกว่าจะเกิดความสงบเรียบร้อยทั้งฝั่งซ้ายและฝั่งขวาของแม่น้ำโขงในระยะ 25 กิโลเมตร อย่างไรก็ดี การยึดครองเมืองทั้งสองนี้เป็นการยึดครองเพียงบางส่วน ปรากฎว่าส่วนใดที่ยังคงอยู่ในอำนาจอธิปไตยของไทยก็จะมีราษฎรอพยพเข้ามาอยู่เรื่อยๆ ในระหว่างที่กองทหารฝรั่งเศสยึดครองเมืองอยู่นั้น เศรษฐกิจของเมืองทั้งสองโดยเฉพาะเมืองจันทบุรีมีสภาพดีขึ้นกว่าเดิม แต่แม้กระนั้นก็มีปัญหาต่างๆ ตามมา เช่น ปัญหากรณีพิพาทต่างๆ อันเกิดจากคนในบังคับฝรั่งเศส ปัญหาเรื่องการหลบหนีภาษี และที่สำคัญมากคือปัญหาอั้งยี่กำเริบ ปัญหาเหล่านี้รวมทั้งการที่เมืองจันทบุรีและเมืองตราดเป็นเมืองที่อยู่ในเขตการปกครองของไทยอย่างแท้จริง และพลเมืองส่วนใหญ่เป็นไทย โดย เฉพาะเมืองจันทบุรีเป็นเมืองท่าสำคัญในทางยุทธศาสตร์ ไทยจึงพยายามที่จะเจรจาเพื่อของให้ฝรั้งเศสถอนทหารออกไปจากเมืองจันทบุรี ซึ่งในที่สุดก็ประสบความสำเร็จภายหลังจากที่ไทยต้องยอมเสียดินแดนบางส่วนเป็นการตอบแทนให้ฝรั่งเศส แม้กระนั้นฝรั่งเศสก็ไปยึดครองเมืองตราดอีก จนกระทั่งไทยต้องยอมเสียดินแดนแลกเปลี่ยนอีกครั้งหนึ่ง ฝรั่งเศสถึงถอนกองทหารออกจากเมืองตราด จึงเป็นอันว่าเมืองทั้งสองได้กลับคืนมาเป็นของไทยอย่างสมบูรณ์หลังจากเป็นหลักทรัพย์ค้ำประกันตามคำเรียกร้องของฝรั่งเศสเป็นเวลาร่วม 14 ป
