THE PROBLEM OF AUTHOR GENDER ATTRIBUTION IMPACT OF GENRE
No full textPurpose. The authors attempt to prove the possibility and to develop the approaches to detect the gender of the author of written text on the basis of analysis of formal grammatical parameters of the texts of different genres. Methodology. The author propose to predict the gender of the author with the use of quantitative text analysis and estimating the correlations of qualitative text parameters which are beyond the control of the author (relation of certain morphological, syntactic items, function words, etc.) applying morphological parsers and methods of statistical data processing. It is proposed to use as input data texts of different genres – scientific papers, essays and folk stories about meetings with supernatural – to reveal gender-related text parameters which present in the text regardless оf its genre and genre-specific ones. Results. The authors substantiate the necessity and propose the approaches to reveal two sets of parameters (relevant to the texts of various genres (first order set) and genre-specific (second order set)) which correlate with author gender is drawn. Practical implications. The results of analysis using proposed approaches will contribute to the solving the problems of gender linguistics and may be used to develop the methods for predicting the gender of the author of written text. School Bus Safety Study: Kadyn’s Law, December 2012
No full textIn 2012, the Iowa legislature passed a bill for an act relating to school bus safety, including providing penalties for failure to obey school bus warning lamps and stop signal arms, providing for a school bus safety study and administrative remedies, and making an appropriation. The bill, referred to as Iowa Senate File (SF) 2218 or “Kadyn’s Law,” became effective March 16, 2012. A multiagency committee addressed three specific safety study elements of Kadyn’s Law as follows:
* Use of cameras mounted on school buses to enhance the safety of children riding the buses and aid in enforcement of motor vehicle laws pertaining to stop-arm violations
* Feasibility of requiring school children to be picked up and dropped off on the side of the road on which their home is located
* Inclusion of school bus safety as a priority in driver training curriculum

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
