Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

A Study on the Phoneme System of Chinese Represented in Nineguixing(你呢貴姓)

When it comes to studying a certain language, a transcribed material in another language is of high value in that it is recorded from a different perspective about the same one language. Nineguixing(你呢貴姓), the book being examined in this thesis, is an anonymous conversation book that was published for the purpose of learning Chinese during the reign of King Gojong (1864-1906), in the latter half of Joseon. This thesis introduces the transcribing system of Nineguixing, sheds light on the phoneme system of Chinese reflected on Nineguixing by analyzing the transcription, and investigates the transcribing characteristics in the history of phonology. When the sound system of Chinese is to be apprehended that appears in the Korean-Chinese translation data, the first thing to do is to analyze and understand the transcriptions in a precise way. Accordingly, this thesis classifies the transcriptions of Nineguixing into onsets (initials) and rhymes (finals) and presents them in detail, with the number of their appearance. Furthermore, it looks into the causes for the exceptional transcriptions of some characters from various angles, and diachronically examines the traits of phonological changes represented in the transcriptions of Nineguixing by comparing the book with the other textbooks of learning Chinese in the Joseon era. The characteristics of the transcriptions shown in Nineguixing can be recapitulated as follows: First, /ㅸ/ was not used at all, which transcribed [f] of Chinese in the existing Korean-Chinese translation data. Rather, both the consonants of [pʰ] and [f] were transcribed as /ㅍ/. Second, the distinction between /ᅎ, ᅔ, ᄼ/ and /ᅐ, ᅕ, ᄾ/, which were used to transcribe dentals and retroflexes of Chinese, respectively, disappeared, and only /ㅈ, ㅊ, ㅅ/ were used to transcribe all the dentals. Third, there is a tendency not to distinguish [n] from [l]. Fourth, the fortis series were represented as /ㅺ/ and /ㅆ/ in the transcriptions. Fifth, /ᅀ/ was never used, which was for the sounds starting in /z/, and /ㅇ/ was substituted in most cases. Sixth, the [ai] rhyme was transcribed as /ㆎ/, not as /ㅐ/ which was traditionally utilized. Seventh, /ㅔ/ was used to represent the [ie] rhyme, not the [ei] rhyme. Eighth, mostly, there is ‘ㅣ[i]’ inserted between the onset consonant and the main vowel in transcribing the retroflexes. Based on these characteristics of the transcriptions, we can summarize the traits of the phonological change as in the following: In the first place, the palatalization of glottal sounds were not completed. Among Jian xi consonants(見系聲母) that were supposed to be palatalized, only 66% of them became palatalized, and the rest showed two transcriptions, i.e., /ㄱ, ㅈ/, which seemed to be transient. Second, Er hwa(兒化), accompanied by the loss of the medieval sounds starting in /z/ (日母字), was reflected. In the transcriptions, the onset of the sounds with /z/ (日母) seemed to be nullified in most cases. Third, the insertion of [i] in transcribing the retroflex cast doubt on the perfection of retroflexion. However, this insertion rather reflects the process of retroflexion. Lastly, the rounded vowels were extended to include /ㅟ/, in addition to /ㅠ/ and /ㆌ/. The phoneme system and characteristics of Nineguixing can be generalized based on the discussion above. First, the transcribing system of Nineguixing is inconsistent and irregular, compared to the existing books of transliteration in the period of Joseon. This seems to be ascribed to the fact that the contemporary actual sounds were written down for the sake of practical Chinese conversation, and it was not made by the government interpreters who had deep knowledge of phonology. Although Nineguixing has less systematic transcriptions than the extant transliteration books by the Ministry of Interpretation, it basically reflects the phonological system of the northern dialect of Chinese, and takes a similar shape of modern Chinese. Therefore, Nineguixing is an invaluable source since it contains the vivid data of the contemporary spoken dialect of the northern China. Second, the comparison between the transcribing system and phonological phenomena shown in Nineguixing, and those of Hwaeumgyemong(華音啓蒙 : Learning Chinese Sounds, 1883), and Hwaeumgyemongeonhae(華音啓蒙諺解 : The Reference Book of Learning Chinese Sounds, after 1883) reveals that Nineguixing is much more similar to Hwaeumgyemong than to Hwaeumgyemongeonhae. Besides, the phonological changes being consummated in Hwaeumgyemongeonhae are observed to be in progress in Nineguixing. Hence, if Nineguixing contained the contemporary sounds enough to reflect the reality, the time for Nineguixing is surmised to be the 1800s when Hwaeumgyemong was created, under King Gojong's government in the later Joseon. The study of this thesis is in the same vein as the researches of government transliteration books such as Nogeoldae, Baktongsa or Hwaeumgyemongeonhae in that it deals with a Chinese textbook of the Joseon era. On the other hand, it is distinct from the others in that it examines a practical material for lay people's leaning Chinese conversation, not the literature published by the government office of interpretation. A further extended investigation into the Korean-Chinese translation literature, by virtue of its value, needs to be continued, and this thesis is expected to be a small cornerstone of the future researches.;한 나라의 언어를 연구함에 있어 해당 언어를 다른 나라의 언어로 표기해 놓은 외국어 轉寫 자료는 동일한 언어에 대한 서로 다른 각도에서의 기록이라는 점에서 매우 중요한 가치를 지닌다.

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Author Under Sail The Imagination of Jack London, 1893-1902

    No full text
In Author Under Sail, Jay Williams offers the first complete literary biography of Jack London as a professional writer engaged in the labor of writing. It examines the authorial imagination in London's work, the use of imagination in both his fiction and nonfiction, and the ways he defined imagination in the creative process in his business dealings with his publishers, editors, and agents. In this first volume of a two-volume biography, Williams traverses the years 1893 to 1902, from London's "Story of a Typhoon" to The People of the Abyss. The Jack London who emerges in the pages of Author Under Sail is a writer whose partnership with publishers, most notably his productive alliance with George Brett of Macmillan, was one of the most formative in American literary history. London pioneered many author models during the heyday of realism and naturalism, blurring the boundaries of these popular genres by focusing on absorption and theatricality and the representation of the seen and unseen. London created an impassioned, sincere, and extremely personal realism unlike that of other American writers of the time. Author Under Sail is a literary tour de force that reveals the full range of London as writer, creative citizen, and entrepreneur at the same time it sheds light on the maverick side of machine-age literature.Intro -- Title Page -- Copyright Page -- Dedication -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1.
