    Physics from Time Variability of the VHE Blazar PKS 2155-304

    Blazars are the principal extragalactic sources of very high energy gamma-ray emission in the Universe. These objects constitute a sub-class of Active Galactic Nuclei whose emission is dominated by Doppler boosted non-thermal radiation from plasma outflowing at relativistic speeds from the central engine. This plasma outflow happens in the form of large-scale collimated structures called jets, which can extend for Mpc in length and transport energy from the central engine of the galaxy to the larger scale intergalac- tic medium. Over thirty such sources have been discovered to date by ground-based gamma-ray telescopes such as H.E.S.S., and PKS 2155-304 is the prototypical southern-hemisphere representative of this population of objects. In this thesis I have studied in detail some aspects of the temporal variability of the jet emission from PKS 2155-304, combining coordinated observations across the electromagnetic spectrum, from optical polarimetric measurements to X-ray and ground-based gamma-ray data. The temporal properties of the dataset allowed us to derive important physical information about the structure and emission mechanisms of the source and put constraints to the location of the sites of VHE emission and particle acceleration within the jet. We have also derived a sensitive statistical measure, called Kolmogorov distance, which we applied to the large outburst observed from PKS 2155-304 in July 2006, to derive the most stringent constraints to date on limits for the violation of Lorentz invariance induced by quantum-gravity effects from AGN measurements

    The sensitivity of the Durham mk6 ground-based atmospheric cherenkov telescope to very high energy gamma-ray sources

    The subject of this thesis is a determination of the sensitivity of the Durham Mk6 ground based Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescope (lACT), an instrument which uses the imaging atmospheric Cherenkov technique to detect Very High Energy (VHE) gamma-rays. The first three chapters are introductory: Chapter 1 describes the basics of Very High Energy (VHE) gamma ray astronomy. Chapter 2 describes the properties of Extensive Ak Showers (EAS). Chapter 3 describes the detection of these EAS on the ground by lACTs, Chapter 4 details the Durham Mk6 lACT and includes a description of the Cherenkov imaging technique for background discrimination. Chapter 5 describes the MOCCA and SOLMK simulation codes. Chapter 6 contains a description of the details of the simulations produced for this diesis. This chapter continues to its logical conclusion and presents a revised VHE gamma-ray flux of 2.5 ± 0.7(_stat) [+0.5 or -1.6](_syst x lO(_7) photons m(^-2) s(^-1) for a sub set of a previously published data set which gave a 6.8σ detection of the close X-ray selected BL Lac PKS 2155-304. Chapter 7 discusses the importance of PKS 2155- 304 and presents 3σ flux limits for another seven Southern hemisphere AGN observed between 1996 and 1999 using the Durham Mk6 IACT. Finally there is a short discussion on the future of VHE gamma-ray astronomy

    H.E.S.S. Monitoring of PKS 2155-304 in 2015 and 2016

    PKS 2155-304 is one of the brightest blazar located in Southern Hemisphere, monitored with H.E.S.S. since the first light of the experiment. Here we report multiwavelength monitoring observations collected during the period of 2015–2016 with H.E.S.S., Fermi-LAT, Swift-XRT, Swift-UVOT, and ATOM. Two years of multiwavelength data with very good temporal coverage allowed to characterize broadband emission observed from the region of PKS 2155-304 and study potential multifrequency correlations. During the period of monitoring, PKS 2155-304 revealed complex multiwavelength variability with two outbursts characterized by completely different multiband properties. The 2015 activity of the blazar is characterized by a flare observed at all wavelengths studied. The broadband emission observed during the outburst is well correlated without any time lags. Contrary to 2015, in 2016, only orphan outburst in the optical and ultraviolet wavelengths was observed. Such an orphan activity is reported for the first time for the blazar PKS 2155-304

    Fourteen laboratories validated their procedure for detection of infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV) in fish tissues using TaqMan® real-time RT-PCR targeting ISAV RNA segment 8. The participants included 12 laboratories from South America, one from Asia and one from Europe. The OIE Reference Laboratory for ISA at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Canada served as the standard. All laboratories received a panel of 36 blind-coded samples representing six different ISAV preparations in homogenized fish liver or L-15 medium, each in six replicates. A clearly positive control ISAV of known titer was also included. From the results obtained, the 14 laboratories that submitted results reported no false positives. False negatives were mostly observed in the ISAV-spiked fish liver homogenate samples. The lowest virus titer to be detected in the fish liver homogenate was 101 TCID50/ml, but the virus titer that could be detected accurately by most laboratories was 103 TCID50/ml in L-15 medium. Within those laboratories that accurately detected presence of virus in a sample, there was great variation in the Ct values making it impossible to recommend a single cut-off Ct value. A significant factor influencing the Ct values obtained and therefore the diagnostic sensitivity might be the thermocycler software used. The repeatability of the test within each laboratory was high, but the reproducibility between laboratories was low. Presumably this could be improved if all the laboratories used the same RNA extraction method since the starting quality and the quantity of the RNA template is the main determinant of the quality of results once reagents have been optimized. The low reproducibility of the test between laboratories is also suggestive of the need to standardize the threshold fluorescence line of the thermocycler software and to use properly trained personnel to perform the test.Accession Number: 20113281818.
