    Infrared and radio study of star-forming regions associated with IRAS 19111+1048 and IRAS 19110+1045

    A multiwavelength study of the star-forming regions associated with IRAS 19111+1048 and IRAS 19110+1045 has been carried out. These have been simultaneously mapped in two far-infrared bands at λeff = 130 and 200 µm with ~1' angular resolution using the TIFR 1 m balloon-borne telescope. The radio emission from the ionized gas of these regions has been imaged at 1280, 610, and 325 MHz using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, India. Assuming the detected compact sources to represent exciting zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) stars, the initial mass function [ξ(m) ∝m-a] for the IRAS 19111+1048 region is found to be quite steep, with a = 5.3 ± 0.5 for the mass range 14 < m/M < 33. The near-infrared (NIR) source coincident with the IRAS 19111+1048 peak is likely to be an embedded pre-main-sequence star. The spectral types of the ZAMS stars inferred independently from the radio and NIR measurements match very well for a good fraction of the radio sources having NIR counterparts. The best-fit radiative transfer models of the two IRAS sources are in good agreement with the observed spectral energy distributions. A uniform density distribution of dust and gas is implied for both the sources. The extents of ionized gas, number of ZAMS stars, presence of deeply embedded sources, and lower value of L/M for the cloud support the youth of IRAS 19110+1045 vis-a-vis its neighbor, IRAS 19111+1048, consistent with earlier studies

    Tema ovoga rada bila je ispitati antimikrobno djelovanje autohtonih izolata hrvatskog tradicionalnog sušenog sira L. casei M2, L. casei M3, L. plantarum M4, L. plantarum M5, L. casei MA1, L. plantarum MA2 i L. plantarum MA3 prema bakterijama učestalim kontaminatima hrane. Budući da bakterije mliječne kiseline imaju važnu ulogu u konzerviranju i osiguravanju mikrobiološke kvalitete fermentiranog proizvoda zbog proizvodnje različitih ekstracelularnih metabolita i antimikrobnog djelovanja, navedeni bakterijski sojevi se ispituju kao potencijalne starter kulture za proizvodnju sireva. Metodom difuzije u agar i metodom s dvostrukim slojem agara ispitano je antibakterijsko djelovanje odabranih 7 Lactobacillus sojeva prema test-mikroorganizmima Staphylococcus aureus 3048 i Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111. Metoda difuzije u agar pokazala je da su odabrani sojevi uspješno inhibirali rast S. aureus 3048. Slično, svi Lactobacillus sojevi su iskazali antagonističko djelovanje prema L. monocytogenes ATCC 19111, izuzev sojeva L. plantarum MA2 i MA3. Metodom s dvostrukim slojem agara je dodatno potvrđeno potencijalno bakteriocinsko djelovanje prema bakterijama L.monocytogenes ATCC 19111 i S. aureus 3048.The subject of this work was to examine the antimicrobial activity of autochtonous isolates of the traditional Croatian dry cheese, L. casei M2, L. casei M3, L. plantarum M4, L. plantarum M5, L. casei MA1, L. plantarum MA2 and L. plantarum MA3, towards bacteria that are frequent food contaminants. Since lactic acid bacteria play an important role in conserving and securing the microbiological quality of the fermented product, due to the production of different extracellular metabolites and antimicrobial activity, these bacterial strains were tested as potential starter cultures for the cheese production. The antibacterial activity of the 7 selected Lactobacillus strains towards the test-microorganisms, Staphylococcus aureus 3048 and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111, has been tested by the diffusion method in the agar and the agar-spot-test method. The diffusion method into the agar showed that the selected strains have successfully inhibited the growth of S. aureus 3048. Similar to that, all of the Lactobacillus strains showed antagonistic action towards L. monocytogenes ATCC 19111, with the exception of L. plantarum MA2 and MA3 strains. The agar-spot-test method further confirmed the potentially bacteriocinogenic activity towards L.monocytogenes ATCC 19111 and S. aureus 3048

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
