    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Assessing and enhancing EN 16883:2017

    This paper describes the work undertaken within the international project IEA SHC Task 59 Renovating Historic Buildings Towards Zero Energy to produce a handbook for the planning of energy retrofits in historic buildings. The handbook is an attempt to increase use and usability of the European standard EN 16883:2017 - Conservation of cultural heritage -Guidelines for improving the energy performance of historic buildings. The standard provides a decision roadmap for how energy efficiency measures can be identified that both respect the heritage values of the building and improves the energy performance. It also provides general information about energy efficiency in historic buildings. There has been a lot of interest in this standard from researchers in the field of energy efficiency in historic buildings, but it has not been widely used in practice. The first part of the paper summarises an assessment of the use, or lack thereof, of the standard. The assessment is based on nine European case studies that identify how the European standard can be complemented with additional resources, examples and guidance. In the second part the work with a handbook complementing the standard is outlined, and recommendations to future revisions of the standard are suggested

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Energy Retrofit of a 19th-Century Building in a Heritage-Sensitive Context : A parametric study of Bruksladugården, Lövstabruk with support from EN-16883

    Detta arbete behandlar energieffektivisering av Bruksladugården, en byggnadsminnesförklarad 1800-talsbyggnad i det historiskt värdefulla bruksområdet Lövstabruk i Norduppland. Bruksladugården har högt energibehov till följd av ineffektivt värme- och ventilationssystem, samt brister i sitt klimatskal. Studien syftar till att utreda lämpliga energieffektiviserande åtgärder för att byggnaden ska kunna förvaltas hållbart av Statens fastighetsverk och användas av deras hyresgäster. Studiens metodik tog stöd i standarden EN 16883 Bevarande av kulturarv – Riktlinjer för förbättring av energiprestandan i historiska byggnader som genom studien utvärderades. Åtgärdsförslag togs fram med hjälp av verktyget HiBER-tool och bedömdes utifrån standardens kriterier för kulturbevarande, ekonomi, teknisk kompabilitet och energiprestanda. Simuleringsprogrammet VIP-Energy användes inför analysen av energiprestanda. Resultaten visade att de åtgärder med störst energibesparingspotential för Bruksladugården var invändig tilläggsisolering av plan ett, samt utbyte av värmekällan. Slutligen sattes åtgärdspaket ihop med prioritet på teknik-ekonomi respektive kulturbevarande samt ett kombinerat perspektiv. Det kombinerade paketet rekommenderas för Bruksladugården då det balanserade det kulturbevarande perspektivet med det tekno-ekonomiska. Det innebar en estimerad minskning av använd energi med 66 procent, samt hade en kalkylerad återbetalningstid på ca 7 år. Slutsatsen är att betydande energibesparingar kan uppnås med åtgärder som är varsamma och tekniskt anpassade till byggnadens förutsättningar. Standarden EN 16883 var ett användbart verktyg vid studien, för systematisk bedömning och rekommenderas vid liknande projekt. Standarden utvärderades som anpassningsbar och manade till eftertanke och grundlig analys, samt tvärfacklig kompetens.This thesis investigates energy efficiency measures for Bruksladugården, a heritage-listed 19th-century building in the pre-industrial area of Lövstabruk, Sweden. The building’s high energy demand is due to an outdated heating system and poor thermal performance. The aim is to propose sustainable retrofit solutions that preserve cultural and historical values. The method follows the EN 16883 standard “Conservation of cultural heritage - Guidelines for improving the energy performance of historic buildings” which was further evaluated within the scope of the study. Measures were evaluated using criteria for cultural compatibility, technical feasibility, cost-efficiency and energy performance.  The study demonstrates the suitability of combining energy performance and technical compatibility with cultural preservation in the retrofit of historic buildings. The results show that a combined perspective of energy-efficiency and preservation lowers the usage of energy by 66 percent with a pay-off period of 7 years for the specific building. The EN 16883 standard proved to be a useful tool in the study for systematic assessment and is recommended for similar projects. The standard was evaluated as adaptable and encouraged reflection, through analysis and interdisciplinary competence
