Digitised Customs Account records relating to the Port of Bristol, Nov 1472 - Dec 1472 Transcription and translation, on an EXCEL spreadsheet, of the Exchequer ‘particular’ Customers' account for Bristol covering November - December 1472, based on TNA, E122/19/9. The spreadsheet is accompanied by a 2,600 word introduction (pdf), which discusses the document as an incomplete account with some odd features. The auditing of the account and the nature of the customs service at this time, which was characterised by rapid changes in personnel a a result of the complex and shifting dynastic politics, is considered. What the customs account reveals about Bristol's trade and trading privileges at the time is discussed. There is also the usual information about editorial practices adopted in the transcription of the account

Structure, (governance) and health: An unsolicited response

Background: In a recently published article, it was suggested that governance was the significant structural factor affecting the epidemiology of HIV. This suggestion was made notwithstanding the observed weak correlation between governance and HIV prevalence (r = .2). Unfortunately, the paper raised but left unexamined the potentially more important questions about the relationship between the broader health of populations and structural factors such as the national economy and physical infrastructure. Methods: Utilizing substantially the same data sources as the original article, the relationship between population health (healthy life expectancy) and three structural factors (access to improved water, GDP per capita, and governance) were examined in each of 176 countries. Results: Governance was found to be significantly correlated with population health, as were GDP per capita, and access to improved water. They were also found to be significantly correlated with each other. Conclusion: The findings are discussed with reference to the growing interest in structural factors as an explanation for population health outcomes, and the relatively weak relationship between governance and HIV prevalence

In its research program, the CRC 1472 ‘Transformations of the Popular’ has argued that “the long conceptual and problematic history before 1950 should be conceived as a prefigurational space of the popular” (Döring et al. 2021: 19). In this working paper, our interdisciplinary group of scholars addresses the question of how the historical dimensions of the transformations of the popular were already evident before the transformation stage around 1950. We propose to better understand the corresponding observations not as ‘prefigurations’, but as enabling conditions for the transformations of the popular. The plausibility of these assumptions is illustrated by examples from the projects of the Collaborative Research Centre, which explore the phenomena of pop, popularization, and populism not only from the mid-20th century but already from around 1800

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Umkehr der Beweislast

    No full text
Umkehr der Beweislast (reversal of the burden of proof), a central term of the CRC 1472 Transformations of the Popular, describes the shift from an axiological framework of asymmetrical ‘high’/‘low’ semantics to a distinction between ‘popular’ and ‘non-popular’. What used to be validated through its affiliation to high culture may face new pressures to legitimize itself in a system focused on being noticed by many. Popularity thus functions as a resource that can enhance or challenge evaluation standards. This is illustrated and concretized through five case studies: from the Schiller-Nicolai debate in the 18th century, to Popliteratur around 2000, and digital platforms such as the official Perry Rhodan forum, the social-reading-platform Wattpad, or Instagram as a space for local political communication. It indicates that popularity does not replace existing hierarchies but rather creates tensions between ‘high’ and ‘low’ in new regimes of valuation and valorization. The Umkehr der Beweislast describes dynamic processes that combine qualitative and quantitative approaches. Therefore, a multi-perspective analysis is crucial for understanding power structures as well as legitimization and evaluation mechanisms
