Henry Percy, first earl of Northumberland: ambition, conflict and cooperation in late mediaeval England
No full textThis thesis examines the political career of Henry Percy, 1st earl of
Northumberland. Chapter one examines the background of the Percy
family, and Henry Percy's career in the years leading to his elevation to
the earldom of Northumberland. Chapter two considers his
relationships with John of Gaunt and the Neville family both at times of
crisis and during times of relative stability. It also examines his
relationship with the wider political community in the north of England
and his role on the Scottish border during the late fourteenth century.
Chapter three focuses on the turbulent years of 1399-1403. It offers
new interpretations of Percy's participation in the revolution of 1399
and in the events leading to the 1403 rebellion led by his son Henry
'Hotspur'. Chapter four traces the final years of Percy's life from 1404-8.
It re-interprets the events leading to his flight to Scotland in 1405, his
years there, in Wales and on the continent and his final, fatal return to
England in 1408

Compact stellar systems around NGC 1399
No full textWe have obtained spectroscopic redshifts of colour-selected point sources in four wide area VLT-FLAMES ( Very Large Telescope-Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph) fields around the Fornax cluster giant elliptical galaxy NGC 1399, identifying as cluster members 27 previously unknown faint (-10.5 <M-g' <-8.8) compact stellar systems (CSS), and improving redshift accuracy for 23 previously catalogued CSS.By amalgamating our results with CSS from previous 2dF observations and excluding CSS dynamically associated with prominent (non-dwarf) galaxies surrounding NGC 1399, we have isolated 80 'unbound' systems that are either part of NGC 1399's globular cluster (GC) system or intracluster GCs. For these unbound systems, we find (i) they are mostly located off the main stellar locus in colour-colour space; (ii) their projected distribution about NGC 1399 is anisotropic, following the Fornax cluster galaxy distribution, and there is weak evidence for group rotation about NGC1399; (iii) their completeness-adjusted radial surface density profile has a slope similar to that of NGC 1399's inner GC system; (iv) their mean heliocentric recessional velocity is between that of NGC 1399' s inner GCs and that of the surrounding dwarf galaxies, but their velocity dispersion is significantly lower; (v) bright CSS (MV <-11) are slightly redder than the fainter systems, suggesting they have higher metallicity; (vi) CSS show no significant trend in g'-i' colour index with radial distance from NGC 1399.</p
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The Baronage in the Reign of Richard II, 1377-1399
Full text linkThis thesis is a prosopographical study of the English baronage during the reign of Richard II. It considers the role of barons within the political community and attempts to characterise them, both in terms of their engagement with institutions and by exploring private power relations. In the tradition of the political culture framework within which the study is situated, it seeks ultimately to determine the group’s motives.
The first section explores structures, defining the baronage and tracing the historical development of the class. The stresses and concepts that moulded and distinguished the political culture are also set out. Three broad themes – politics, land and lordship - are then discussed in the second section. These endeavour to quantify and qualify the power and authority that were exercised by the 66 baronial families from the reign. In the political arena barons’ engagement with the apparatus of royal government, administration and justice are investigated, along with political favour and its rewards. The size and distribution of their landholding is then assessed and the strategies they employed for putting their estates together determined. The service they performed and received is afterwards discussed and the reasons for and benefits of it analysed. These broader themes are then enriched by a demonstration of the differences on the ground. In this third section two case studies, of the Gloucestershire and Sussex barons, revisit the same themes, but look in more detail at just the handful of resident barons in those counties. Finally, the different situations in the two sample localities are reconciled by deciphering the barons’ motives
