IEEE 1394 embedded system design for industrial image acquisition
This contribution gives an overview of embedded 1394 systems for industrial image acquisition. This includes the development of a reference hardware platform and an implementation of the 1394 software layers, both suited for industrial applications. The hardware is divided into four parts: a standard 1394 embedded chipset, a microcontroller system that runs the embedded application and the higher 1394 protocol layers, some specific hardware for handling of isochronous data, and a power unit that can be fed either via the Serial Bus or an external power supply. The presentation describes these parts and their system integration. In addition, the architecture of the software is outlined. Especially, the interaction between a full implementation of Transaction Layer and Serial Bus Management on one side and an Application Programming Interface on the other side is explained in detail. It will be shown how to implement the software stack on controllers with medium performance. The application of this embedded 1394 implementation is shown by means of two industrial systems that are based on the reference design. The first one is a device for high resolution digital image acquisition. Acquired images with size up to 5000 times 7000 pixels and color resolution of 36 bit per pixel are transmitted via 1394. It can be used both for photographic purposes and for image scanning for optical quality control. The second example is a system for optical measurement of crankshafts. It consists of several cameras each of them incorporating some preprocessing circuitry and a 1394 interface
Nr.3
The Tree Identify Protocol of IEEE 1394 in mu CRL
We specify the tree identify protocol of the IEEE 1394 high performance serial multimedia bus at three different levels of detail using μCRL. We use the cones and foci verification technique of Groote and Springintveld to show that the descriptions are equivalent under branching bisimulation, thereby demonstrating that the protocol behaves as expected

Enhanced QoS support in wireless IEEE 1394 networks
This thesis addresses the performance analysis and improvement of Wireless IEEE 1394 networks. Wireless IEEE 1394 appears to be the only existing QoS capable broadband wireless home networking solution that has been standardized. Our study investigates the performance of the original Wireless 1394 protocol. It also addresses protocol extensions that improve the original Wireless 1394 network, as well as add new useful functionalities. The performance analysis has taken into consideration the behaviour of the wireless channel through simple, yet effective and widely used model. The evaluation demonstrated the strong potential of Wireless IEEE 1394. They also uncovered some weaknesses, which our protocol extensions addressed successfully
Sewing the Body of Christ : Eucharist wafer souvenirs stitched into fifteenth-century manuscripts, primarily in the Netherlands
Books of hours in the fifteenth century occupied several social and devotional roles. People used them to store small objects, including metal badges. Although the cultural practice of sewing in badges was widespread in the late Middle Ages, nearly all of the badges were removed (by later collectors). This article examines the practice by considering needle holes and offsets in the soft parchment, which indicate the shape of the badges and where they were attached. Noting that vast majority of metal offsets in books of hours are round, the author posits that these were not impressed by pilgrims’ badges, as is often repeated in the scholarly literature, but rather by tokens that commemorate having taken the Eucharist. The round badges are the same size and shape and bear the same imagery as host wafers. Owners stitched such badges into their books’ margins at locations relevant to Eucharistic piety. When they were sewn into books, Eucharist badges reconfigured the book as a shrine that recorded a votary’s pursuit of Communion.Peer reviewe

IEEE 1394 Tree Identify Protocol: Introduction to the case study
We introduce a comparative case study on the application of formal methods and techniques to the Tree Identify Protocol of the IEEE standard 1394 serial multimedia bus. The Tree Identify Protocol makes an ideal subject for this purpose because it is small yet complex, and may be modelled in a variety of ways. We provide an informal explanation of the protocol, describe how the case study was conducted, and give an overview of the results
