12 Armenian Popular Tales (Հայ Ժողովրդական Հեքիաթներ) by Hovhannes Tumanyan: translation, glossary and notes

Hovhannes Tadevosi Tumanian ((Հովհաննես Թադևոսի Թումանյան - 1869-1923), \"The National Poet of All Armenians\", wrote, in the interval of 1894-1914, the 22 Armenian Fairy (or Folk) Tales (Հայ Ժողովրդական Հեքիաթներ). Based on a parallel with Câmara Cascudo (2018 [1946]) and with the first edition (1930) in which the 22 texts were compiled, they are called, in the translation here presented, \"popular tales\". This thesis comprises the first-time direct translation from the Armenian language to the Portuguese language of 12 of these 22 short stories. This thesis includes a Glossary of terms and terminology featuring: nouns, adjectives, postpositions, adverbs, interjections, study of initial formulas, idiomatic expressions, altogether with excerpts of the translated popular tales in which those words and expressions are used. Given the difficulty of reading Tumanian\'s texts - considering their wide range of regional, colloquial and dialectal registers, that is, words that are often not listed in dictionaries and even, when searched online, found only in Tumanian\'s texts -, building the Glossary proved to be an essential resource in directing the translation. This thesis is also an original academic research, once there are no Armenian-Portuguese or Portuguese-Armenian dictionaries, especially a bilingual dictionary addressing language uses concerning those two languages, containing different senses of the words; this is a role that the Glossary built for this thesis aims to fulfill, providing examples from the popular tales we have translated, along with their identification, so that these passages can be backtracked in a cross-reference search of the texts, making it possible to find and reread them in the bilingual disposition in which the texts are organized. The building of the glossary was done through inquiries into monolingual online platforms (WIKIBARAN, 2021; BARARAN ONLINE, 2021; NAYIRI, 2021), as well as bilingual dictionaries: Armenian-English (BARATYAN, 2011), English-Armenian (GRIGORYAN ; GRIGORYAN, 2011), English-Armenian and Armenian-English (SEFERIAN; HOVHANNISSIAN; KHACHATRIAN; KALAEJIAN; GRIGORIAN, 2009); and Armenian-Spanish (TEKEYÁN, 1984). For the establishment of the Armenian texts, virtual sources (ARMENIANHOUSE, 2021; WIKIDARAN, 2021; EANC, 2021; TUMANYAN, 2021) and digitalized physical sources (TUMANIAN, 1930, 1949, 1950, 1978, 1994, 2014) were compared. This solved, above all, excerpts with typing and punctuation errors. Among consulted translation theories are: a. Hilaire Belloc\'s reflections on translation of narratives and narrative time (1931a, 1931b); b. Friedrich Schleiermacher (2001 [1813]); c. Wilhelm Humboldt (2001 [1816]); d. Benedetto Croce (2005 [1925, 1928]). This thesis\' main objective is the annotated, commented and explained translation, through extensive endnotes, added to the discussion of the translation process. Those notes expand the translated text by covering: grammatical, syntactic, morphological aspects; translation strategies and choices; comparative and contrastive analysis of a same given structure in different tales; translation difficulties and challenges. This thesis will contribute, consequently, to establish and disseminate a literary work, unknown across the Lusophone world, by an author of paramount importance in Armenian literature

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    NGC 1377: an extragalactic proto-starburst

NGC 1377 is the archetype of a class of galaxies called nascent starbursts, selected by their very high infrared to radio continuum flux ratios and their high dust temperatures. This nearby galaxy is an ideal test case to refine the understanding of the mechanisms of the infrared-radio correlation of star-forming galaxies; to characterize the physical conditions of an embedded starburst at its very onset; and to gain a better knowledge of the activity of a class of ultraluminous galaxies sharing the main infrared-radio properties of NGC 1377. We present new data on NGC 1377 obtained as part of the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS) Legacy program and discuss briefly our interpretation of the combined optical, infrared and radio properties

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
