    Thermal and crystallization history of olivine-gabbroic shergottite Northwest Africa (NWA) 13227: a link between poikilitic and gabbroic shergottites?

    Martian meteorites are the only samples currently available on Earth to study Mars. Most martian meteorites are igneous in origin. Understanding the formation of these igneous rocks, and any potential links between different types of igneous groups can provide insight into mantle and crust composition and evolution, including early differentiation, convection, volatile content, and planetary differentiation. Martian meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 13227 represents an olivine-gabbroic shergottite, a relatively new shergottite group, which differs from previously described gabbroic shergottites due to their high quantities of olivine. It holds special significance because it may represent a potential link between gabbroic and poikilitic shergottites. NWA 13227 is comprised of phenocrystic, oscillatory zoned pyroxene and olivine, set in a matrix of maskelynite, Fe-Cr-Ti oxides, phosphates, and sulfides. It displays both gabbroic and poikilitic textures in 2D from back-scattered electron images, and in 3D from X-ray Computed Tomography (XCT) imaging. Its rare earth element (REE) profile indicates that it falls under the enriched shergottite group with a (La/Yb)CI = 1.13, similar to enriched poikilitic shergottites and gabbroic shergottites. Based on the Ti/Al ratio of pyroxene, phosphorous zoning in olivine, and minor components in phosphates and oxides, we infer that NWA 13227 began crystallizing under redox conditions of -2.6 QFM and temperatures of ~1157°C, consistent with conditions in Mars’ lower crust/upper mantle. The sample finished crystallizing at or near the surface under redox conditions of -0.5 QFM and temperatures ~857°C. The volatile ratios in apatites indicate that NWA 13227 experienced de-gassing during the last stages of crystallization. Modeled Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd sources give an estimated age for NWA 13227 of between ~150 – 260 Ma. The mineralogy, petrology, and mineral chemistry of NWA 13227 indicate affinities to both poikilitic and gabbroic shergottites, and thus, suggest that these groups share a common origin or magmatic plumbing system, like those proposed for enriched poikilitic and gabbroic shergottites. NWA 13227 is the first sample that suggests a link between gabbroic and poikilitic shergottites.M.S.Includes bibliographical reference

    Relationship Among Genes Conferring Partial Resistance to Leaf Rust (Puccinia Triticina) in Wheat Lines CI 13227 and L-574-1.

    This study describes the segregation of genes for resistance to the fungus Puccinia triticinain a cross between partially resistant wheat lines L-574-1 and CI 13227 with two and four genes for resistance, respectively. The objectives of this study were to use parental, F1, F2, and backcross populations to quantify maternal effects, degree of dominance, and transgressive segregation, and to determine whether CI 13227 and L-574-1 share any resistance genes for long latent period or small uredinia. In two experiments conducted in the greenhouse, the uppermost leaf of adult wheat plants was inoculated prior to heading with P. triticina. On days 6 to 21 after inoculation, the number of uredinia that erupted from the leaf surface was counted and used to calculate the mean latent period (MLP). The length and width of five arbitrarily selected uredinia were measured and used to calculate uredinium area. Midparent values, degree of dominance, and broad-sense heritability were calculated for MLP and uredinium area. For experiment A, MLP values for CI 13227, L-574-1, F1, and F2 generations were 12.2, 10.5, 10.2, and 10.6 days, respectively. For experiment B, MLP values for CI 13227, L-574-1, F1, F2, backcross to CI 13227, and backcross to L-574-1 were 12.3, 10.0, 10.6, 10.8, 11.1, and 10.0 days, respectively. The inheritance of long latent period was partially recessive, and no maternal effect was present (P = 0.62 to 0.87 for the comparison of means in reciprocal crosses). Broad-sense heritability for MLP ranged from 0.72 to 0.74, and there was transgressive segregation in the F2 and backcross populations. Uredinia of the F1 generation were slightly larger than uredinia for CI 13227. The inheritance of uredinium size was partially dominant, and no maternal effect was present (P = 0.5 to 0.63). Broad-sense heritability for uredinium area ranged from 0.36 to 0.73 and transgressive segregation was present in the F2 and backcross populations. The results for MLP indicate that lines CI 13227 and L-574 likely share one gene for resistance (based on F1 values) but not two genes (based on the presence of transgressive segregation). CI 13227 and L 574-1 appear to have at least one gene difference for uredinium area. The linear relationship between uredinium area regressed onto MLP was significant (P \u3c 0.001) and r2 values ranged from 0.14 to 0.26. These results indicate that the resistance in CI 13227 and L-574-1 could be combined to create wheat cultivars with greater partial resistance than that possessed by either parent based on MLP or uredinium size

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
