    The ISO/IEC 11179 norm for metadata registries: Does it cover healthcare standards in empirical research?

    AbstractIn order to support empirical medical research concerning reuse and improvement of the expressiveness of study data and hence promote syntactic as well as semantic interoperability, services are required for the maintenance of data element collections. As part of the project for the implementation of a German metadata repository for empirical research we assessed the ability of ISO/IEC 11179 “Information technology – Metadata registries (MDR)” part 3 edition 3 Final Committee Draft “Registry metamodel and basic attributes” to represent healthcare standards. First step of the evaluation was a reformulation of ISO’s metamodel with the terms and structures of the different healthcare standards. In a second step, we imported instances of the healthcare standards into a prototypical database implementation representing ISO’s metamodel. Whereas the flat structure of disease registries as well as some controlled vocabularies could be easily mapped to the ISO’s metamodel, complex structures as used in reference models of electronic health records or classifications could be not exhaustively represented. A logical reconstruction of an application will be needed in order to represent them adequately. Moreover, the correct linkage between elements from ISO/IEC 11179 edition 3 and concepts of classifications remains unclear. We also observed some restrictions of ISO/IEC 11179 edition 3 concerning the representation of items of the Operational Data Model from the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium, which might be outside the scope of a MDR. Thus, despite the obvious strength of the ISO/IEC 11179 edition 3 for metadata registries, some issues should be considered in its further development

    QL4MDR: a GraphQL query language for ISO 11179-based metadata repositories

    Abstract Background Heterogeneous healthcare instance data can hardly be integrated without harmonizing its schema-level metadata. Many medical research projects and organizations use metadata repositories to edit, store and reuse data elements. However, existing metadata repositories differ regarding software implementation and have shortcomings when it comes to exchanging metadata. This work aims to define a uniform interface with a technical interlingua between the different MDR implementations in order to enable and facilitate the exchange of metadata, to query over distributed systems and to promote cooperation. To design a unified interface for multiple existing MDRs, a standardized data model must be agreed on. The ISO 11179 is an international standard for the representation of metadata, and since most MDR systems claim to be at least partially compliant, it is suitable for defining an interface thereupon. Therefore, each repository must be able to define which parts can be served and the interface must be able to handle highly linked data. GraphQL is a data access layer and defines query techniques designed to navigate easily through complex data structures. Results We propose QL4MDR, an ISO 11179-3 compatible GraphQL query language. The GraphQL schema for QL4MDR is derived from the ISO 11179 standard and defines objects, fields, queries and mutation types. Entry points within the schema define the path through the graph to enable search functionalities, but also the exchange is promoted by mutation types, which allow creating, updating and deleting of metadata. QL4MDR is the foundation for the uniform interface, which is implemented in a modern web-based interface prototype. Conclusions We have introduced a uniform query interface for metadata repositories combining the ISO 11179 standard for metadata repositories and the GraphQL query language. A reference implementation based on the existing Samply.MDR was implemented. The interface facilitates access to metadata, enables better interaction with metadata as well as a basis for connecting existing repositories. We invite other ISO 11179-based metadata repositories to take this approach into account

    Einbettungsmöglichkeit von Standards des Gesundheitswesens in die ISO/IEC 11179 Metadata Registries: Ein Weg zu besserer Qualität empirischer Forschung

    Der Prozess der Erhebung, Speicherung, Verwertung und Auswertung biomedizinischer Daten in der empirischen Forschung bedarf einer detaillierten Spezifikation von Metadaten, welche die Dokumentationsmerkmale exakt definieren. Das Fehlen dieser Spezifikation verursacht Datenungenauigkeiten, eine mindere Qualität und geringere Aussagekraft der Daten sowie zeitaufwändige Plausibilitätsprüfungen. Konzepte und Methoden werden daher benötigt, um solche Nachteile zu reduzieren, die Harmonisierung und Standardisierung von Datenbeständen der Medizin sowie die Wiederverwendung von Metadaten zu unterstützen, und die syntaktische und semantische Interoperabilität zwischen beteiligten Forschungszentren zu verbessern. Als Teil des vom Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung geförderten Projekts \?Spezifikation und prototypische Implementierung eines Metadata Repository für die klinische und epidemiologische Forschung in Deutschland“ wurde die Möglichkeit untersucht, Standards des Gesundheitswesen mittels der ISO/IEC 11179 'Information technology - Metadata Registries (MDR)' Teil 3 Version 3 Final Committee Draft 'Registry Metamodel and basic attributes' darzustellen bzw. dort zu integrieren. Während die flache Struktur von Registern sowie die Klassen kontrollierter Vokabularen in dem ISO/IEC 11179 Metamodell abgebildet werden konnten, blieben komplexe Strukturen und Regeln, wie sie jeweils in Referenzmodellen für elektronischen Patientenakten und Klassifikationen benutzt werden, teilweise offen. Zudem sind Lösungen für die korrekte Verbindung zwischen Datenelementen und Elementen einer Klassifikation noch zu erarbeiten. Trotz der offensichtlichen Mächtigkeit der ISO/IEC 11179 V3 für Metadaten Registries bedürfen einige der hier dargelegten Einbettungsprobleme einer erneuten Abwägung bei der Weiterentwicklung der ISO/IEC 11179

    Perkembangan teknologi informasi membawa banyak perubahan bagi kehidupan maupun bisnis. Perkembangan ini membuat instansi pemerintah untuk mulai menerapkan sistem pemerintahan berbasis elektronik (SPBE). Untuk mendukung penerapan SPBE tersebut, diperlukan sebuah rancangan strategis sistem informasi yang diperlukan berdasarkan visi, misi organisasi, tupoksi organisasi. Pada saat ini badan XYZ masih belum memiliki penamaan dan pendefisnian pada sistem yang jelas dan terstruktur dengan baik, sehingga perlu untuk dilakukan penelitian untuk merancang data dictionary pada badan XYZ dengan menggunakan International Organization for Standarization (ISO) / International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 11179 tentang metadata registry. Dengan pembuatan data dictionary, diharapkan badan XYZ dapat memiliki pengelolaan data yang jelas dengan sistem penamaan yang terstruktur dengan baik. Tahapan perancangan dimulai dari studi literatur, analisa hasil arsitektur bisnis dari bidang XYZ, selanjutnya merancang arsitektur data berdasarkan Conceptual Data Diagram (CDM) yang sudah dibahas pada penelitian sebelumnya, kemudian dilanjutkan dengan perancangan data dictionary yang mengacu pada International Organization for Standarization (ISO) / International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 11179. Rules and Guidelinse for the Formulation of Data Definitions: Part 4 dan Naming and Identification Principles for Data Elements: Part 5. Langkah terakhir adalah dengan melakukan verifikasi, langkah ini dilakukan untuk memastikan apakah data dictionary ini sudah memenuhi standar ISO/IEC 11179. Hasil akhir dari penelitian ini merupakan sebuah Data Dictionary dengan penamaan dan pendefinisian sesuai dengan standar ISO/IEC 11179. ===================================================================================================== The development of information technology brings many changes to life and business. This development prompted government agencies to start implementing an electronic-based government system (SPBE). To support the implementation of the SPBE, a strategic design of the information system is needed based on the vision, mission of the organization, and the main tasks of the organization. At this time the XYZ agency still does not have a clear and well structured naming and definition system, so it is necessary to do research to design a data dictionary on the XYZ body using the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) / International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 11179 regarding registry metadata. With the creation of a data dictionary, it is hoped that the XYZ entity can have clear data management with a wellstructured naming system. The design stage starts from the study of literature, analyzing the results of business architecture from the XYZ field, then designing the data architecture based on the Conceptual Data Diagram (CDM) which has been discussed in previous research, then continued with the design of a data dictionary that refers to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) / International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 11179 Rules and Guidelinse for the Formulation of Data Definitions: Part 4 and Naming and Identification Principles for Data Elements: Part 5. The last step is to verify, this step is done to ensure whether this data dictionary meets the standards ISO/IEC 11179. The final result of this research is a Data Dictionary with the naming and definition according to the standard ISO/IEC 1117

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Implementing an ISO/IEC 11179-3 Metadata Repository for Labour Market Data: Building Semantics through Data Structures

    The increasing demand for documentation of the workflow to keep track of large amounts of statistical tables and international comparative research urges the Institute for Labour Studies (ILS) to implement a metadata repository. The ISO/IEC 11179-3 standard offers explicit guidelines for developing metadata-registries. One of the core fundamentals for an ISO/IEC 11179-3 metadata repository is the separation of a conceptual layer from a data representation layer. The paper shows the experiences of the ILS with implementing the necessary data structures for setting up a registry for labour market data. The mapping of data element concepts to conceptual domains and data elements using a concept browser is illustrated. Further it is shown how the concept browser facilitates the management and navigation of knowledge domains in labour market research
