Authoring Personal Interpretation in a 3D Virtual Heritage Site to Enhance Visitor Engagement
Conventional approaches to a virtual heritage site that provide interpretations through curated content allow visitors only the lowest level of engagement, which is paying conscious, intentional attention to the content. In this paper, we propose a trajectory for visitor experience to a virtual heritage site that facilitates a higher level of engagement by letting visitors make their own interpretations. We developed a mobile virtual reality (VR) application that delivers this trajectory, which allows visitors to author mixed reality (MR) content that represents personal interpretations. The application provides three types of virtual assets to compose MR content: historical assets, emotional assets, and personal assets. We describe how visitors generally followed our trajectory and used virtual assets, engaging with virtual heritage and making interpretations. We related our findings to a discussion of how to support personal engagement and rich interpretation in a virtual heritage site
Evaluating the Combination of Visual Communication Cues for HMD-based Mixed Reality Remote Collaboration
© 2019 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Many researchers have studied various visual communication cues (e.g. pointer, sketching, and hand gesture) in Mixed Reality remote collaboration systems for real-world tasks. However, the effect of combining them has not been so well explored. We studied the effect of these cues in four combinations: hand only, hand + pointer, hand + sketch, and hand + pointer + sketch, with three problem tasks: Lego, Tangram, and Origami. The study results showed that the participants completed the task significantly faster and felt a significantly higher level of usability when the sketch cue is added to the hand gesture cue, but not with adding the pointer cue. Participants also preferred the combinations including hand and sketch cues over the other combinations. However, using additional cues (pointer or sketch) increased the perceived mental effort and did not improve the feeling of co-presence. We discuss the implications of these results and future research directions
Grocery and chain restaurant foods and beverages allowed for sale in Ontario schools: An evaluation against Ontario’s School Food and Beverage Policy.
The Ontario School Food and Beverage policy, also known as Policy/Program Memorandum 150 (PPM150), was established in 2010 to promote healthier food choices among children by setting nutrition standards for foods and beverages sold in publicly funded elementary and secondary schools. Schools face barriers to complying with the PPM150 nutrition standards including a lack of human resources, technical tools and financial means. Therefore, to support school food providers in sourcing foods that meet the nutrition standards in PPM150, this cross-sectional study assessed the alignment of foods and beverages from grocery stores and menu offerings from chain restaurants with the PPM150 nutrition standards. We compared nutrition data for foods and beverages available at grocery stores and menu items available at chain restaurants from the Food Label Information and Price (FLIP) 2020 (n=35,103) and Menu-FLIP 2020 (n=18,649) databases, respectively, against the PPM150 nutrition standards. Half of foods from grocery stores (51%) and most from chain restaurants (85%) did not meet PPM150 standards and are not permitted for sale. For beverages, 91% from grocery stores and 98% from chain restaurants are not permitted at elementary schools. At secondary schools, 56% of beverages from grocery stores and 94% from restaurants are not permitted. Findings suggest few foods, beverages and chain restaurant menu items meet the PPM150 nutrition standards, potentially posing an additional barrier for Ontario schools to procure and offer healthy foods to students. The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page.
Abstract:
In this article, we examine the contemporary procedural poetics in Chile as a provocative practice that challenges traditional notions of authorship and textuality. By considering the procedural poem as one that privileges the potential for the creation or imagination of new
poems by the author and reader, we categorize the Chilean works within two principal groups: those of restrictions and those of instructions. On the one hand, the procedural poetry of restriction or constriction can be understood as the voluntary elimination of
available determined options. That of instruction, on the other, acts as a sort of musical score or blueprint. This survey of Chilean procedural poetry illustrates that contemporary practices in Chile both contribute to the global lineage of procedural poetry at the same
time that it engages with its own literary history and particular cultural context
