    The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO is one of the United Nation’s co-sponsoring partners for the Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Abstracts (ASFA). This is an abstracting and indexing service covering the world's literature on the science, technology, management, and conservation of marine, brackish water, and freshwater resources and environments, including their socio-economic and legal aspects. The ASFA bibliographic database contains over 820,000 references, with coverage since 1971 (some 800,000 are computer searchable from 1973 onwards). About 3,500 new bibliographic references are added each month to the database. Each bibliographic reference includes: the title of the document in its original language (all non-English titles are also translated into English), an English language and/or non-English language abstract and subject, taxonomic and geographic index entries as relevant. ASFA is produced through the co-operative efforts of the following ASFA Partners (see list in Annex I). The overall objective of the ASFA Partnership is to disseminate information on aquatic sciences and fisheries to the world community, bearing in mind the special interests of developing countries in this field. All the ASFA Partners are represented on the ASFA Advisory Board which meets once a year to decide upon, and oversee the implementation of policy matters with respect to the ASFA service. The secretariat for the board is provided by FAO. The ASFA database is produced by Cambridge Scientific Abstracts (CSA) on contract with FAO. The publishing and marketing of the ASFA CD-ROM products are carried out (under contract to CSA) by 2 CD-ROM publishers: SilverPlatter and NISC. The priority of ASFA identified by the ASFA Advisory Board are: (i) Expansion of the ASFA Partnership, (ii) Improve the Coverage, Accuracy, Timeliness etc. of ASFA (iii) Coordinate the maintenance of the ASFA inputting tools, and (iv) Expanding the dissemination and use of the ASFA information products.Supported by IOC/IODEParis, France, 3-7 March 2003PublishedSeventeenth Sessio

Engenharia Civil.Nos últimos anos tem se observado que os métodos de dimensionamento de pavimentos vigentes no Brasil não atendem mais às solicitações de tráfego. Com o objetivo de desenvolver um novo método de dimensionamento de pavimentos, a Rede Temática de Tecnologia do Asfalto com o patrocínio da PETROBRAS, vem desenvolvendo um projeto onde busca-se conhecer melhor os materiais empregados e o desempenho dos pavimentos em alguns segmentos monitorados situados em diversas regiões do país. Neste contexto, a presente pesquisa tem como objetivo avaliar o desempenho a médio prazo do segmento monitorado de Itapoá em Santa Catarina. O trecho com 400 m de extensão está localizado na rodovia SC-416 e foi aberto ao tráfego em dezembro de 2011. Desde então, foram realizados diversos levantamentos a fim de acompanhar as condições funcionais e estruturais do pavimento. A partir da análise dos resultados foi verificado que quanto a irregularidade longitudinal e ao Índice de Gravidade Global os resultados foram satisfatórios. Com relação a aderência pneu-pavimento constatou-se que os valores de microtextura foram aceitáveis, no entanto, devido aos baixos valores de macrotextura encontrados, o segmento monitorado não apresentou boas condições quando avaliados pelo International Friction Index (IFI). Da avaliação estrutural, observou-se que a espessura de revestimento executada não atende a solicitação do tráfego. Sendo assim, os resultados obtidos mostram a necessidade de um novo método de dimensionamento de pavimentos, para que os mesmos atendam ao tráfego atuante durante todo o período de projeto.In the last years, it has been observed that the pavement methods design in Brazil are no longer satisfying the traffic requirements. From the objective to develop a new method of pavement design, the Rede Temática de Tecnologia do Asfalto, sponsored by PETROBRAS, developed a project that seeks for a better understanding of material's behaviour and pavement's performance in monitored segments situated in several regions of the country. In this context, this research aims to evaluate the medium-term performance of a monitored segment in Itapoá, Santa Catarina. This segment, with 400 meters in length, is located at the highway SC-416 and it was opened for traffic in December 2011. Ever since, many surveys were conducted in order to follow the functional and structural conditions of the pavement. From the analysis of the results, it was verified that both the longitudinal pavement roughness and the pavement condition index (IGG) were satisfactory. In relation to the adhesion between tyre and pavement, it was verified that the measurements of microtexture were acceptable. However, due to the low values of macrotexture, the monitored segment did not show good conditions when evaluated by the International Friction Index (IFI). In relation to rutting, it was found that the deflection has reached critical values. From the structural evaluation, it was observed that the surfacing thickness is not able to withstand the traffic demand. Therefore, the obtained results showed the need of a new method of designing pavements that is able to satisfy the traffic requirements during its entire design life

    Validación del subsistema de presentación de indicaciones del dispositivo ASFA Digital en el ferrocarril español

    En el año 2005, se inició un estudio para desarrollar el dispositivo ASFA digital en el que colaboraron Renfe, Adif, Invensys Rail Dimetronic, Ineco Tifsa y la Universidad de Valencia. En este proyecto, se desarrollaron las especificaciones técnicas y funcionales del sistema Embarcado ASFA Digital. La Universidad de Valencia participó en el diseño del subsistema de presentación de indicaciones del dispositivo ASFA Digital. La última etapa de este estudio es la validación del subsistema de presentación de indicaciones, objetivo de la presente tesis doctoral. Siguiendo las recomendaciones de estudios precedentes (Stevenson, et al., 2000), se ha dejado transcurrir cinco años, tiempo suficiente para que el dispositivo ASFA Digital se haya implementado en la mayoría de las locomotoras del parque ferroviario español y que los maquinistas tengan experiencia con el manejo del mismo. Para alcanzar este objetivo se han considerado dos indicadores: la percepción de seguridad que los maquinistas tienen conduciendo con el dispositivo ASFA Digital y, la evolución del número rebases de señal desde la implementación del dispositivo ASFA Digital en las locomotoras. Los resultados obtenidos con ambos indicadores apuntan que el subsistema de presentación de indicadores del ASFA Digital ha contribuido de modo eficaz en la mejora de la seguridad en la circulación y, que la implementación del dispositivo ASFA Digital ha contribuido notablemente a la disminución de los rebases de señal.

    ASFA: Back from the Edge and Moving towards a New Horizon

    Since its establishment in 1971, ASFA has steadily grown its partnerships and database, paying increasing attention to developing countries’ needs. However, its technologies and partnership model have failed to keep pace with modern developments. In order to address this, the FAO ASFA Secretariat has decided to implement a new Business Model by 2023, and will work with its stakeholders, including the Impact and Strategies Working Group and Strategic Advisory Group, to ensure ASFA remains a valued information product. The new business model will ensure ASFA meets FAO strategic objectives and wider goals of increasing access and dissemination of aquatic sciences and fisheries information. Several analyses have been performed by the ASFA Secretariat and others, which have informed ASFA’s direction. Work has already progressed on a number of areas that will be discussed in this presentation, specifically: ASFA technologies (new input software; online controlled vocabulary); ASFA collaborations (partnering with FAO departments and projects as well as external collaborations); and ASFA partnership model (a new Publishing Agreement with increased access for institutions in developing countries). However, a number of areas of work are to be determined, one of them being the MOU between FAO and IAMSLIC. Updating the MOU could lead to better collaboration between IAMSLIC and ASFA, in line with FAO goals, especially in the area of digital preservation
