Stochastic methods in cancer research. Applications to genomics and angiogenesis

In recent years, interactions between mathematicians and biomedical researchers have increased due to both the complexity of the biological/medical issues and the development of new technologies, producing “large” data rich of information. Biomathematics is applied in many areas, such as epidemiology, clinical trial design, neuroscience, disease modeling, genomics, proteomics, etc. Cancer is a multistep process where the accumulation of genomic lesions alters cell biology. The latter is under control of several pathways and, thus, cancer can origin via different mechanisms affecting different pathways. However, usually, more than one of these mechanisms needs to be damaged before a cell becomes cancerous. Due to the general complexity of this disease and the different type of tumors, the efforts of cancer research cover several research areas such as, for example, immunology, genetics, cell biology, angiogenesis. As a consequence, many biostatistical topics can be applied. The thesis is divided into two parts. In the former, two Bayesian regression methods for the analysis of two types of cancer genomic data are proposed. In the latter, the properties of two estimators of the intensity of a stationary fibre process are studied, which can be applied for the characterization of angiogenic and vascular processes. Estimators of the intensity of stationary planar fibre processes

    No full text
In this article we introduce two classes of estimators of the intensity (i.e. mean length per unit of area) of a stationary planar fibre process and we study their asymptotic properties when the sample of fibres is ``enriched'''' by enlarging the window of observation. The estimators are based on counting the points of intersection of the fibre process with another test fibre process, satisfying suitable regularity conditions; the test process can be simulated and overlapped to a digital image of the fibre process under study. Estimators are applied to study the geometric structure of blood vessels generated on a mouse cornea by a simulated tumor

Performance of fiber reinforcement in completely decomposed granite

    No full text
Adding discrete fibers to soils can improve their strength; however, fiber reinforcement remains scarce in practice. Previous studies on the performance of soils reinforced with discrete fibers consist mainly of laboratory studies with either clay or, most often, uniform sand as the host soil, so there is a lack of data on other types of soils such as weathered soils, which tend to be well graded. Unlike uniform soils, which are generally dilative, well-graded soils usually show a contractive behavior. This study examines the effect of adding fibers to a completely decomposed granite (CDG) typical of many residual soils, which has the characteristics to be sensitive to material and sample preparation and also to be compressive during shearing. It is found that adding discrete fibers to the CDG homogenizes it because the reinforced soil is not sensitive to the method of material or sample preparation. It is also found that, despite its compressive nature, fibers mobilize extra strength compared with the unreinforced soil, and this effect does not reduce at large confining stresses

The origins and consolidation of the Votorantim Memory Project are discussed. The project was presented to the public in 2005, with the publication of its web site. Its architecture and the specific contents of each section are presented, identifying its informative sets and its document repositories. The working hypothesis is that the official history of the Votorantim Group is the result of the confluence between the workers’ memories and the corporate recollection. The background of the project is discussed in the frame of the growth strategy of the company, announced in 2004, and its corporate culture. The project contributes to the reinforcement and amplification of the employees’ corporate affiliation. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

INTENSITY ESTIMATION OF STATIONARY FIBRE PROCESSES FROM DIGITAL IMAGES WITH A LEARNED DETECTOR

Stationary fibre processes are processes of curves in a higher dimensional space, whose distribution is translation invariant. In practical applications, they can be used to model several real objects, such as roots, vascular networks and fibres of materials. Often it is required to compare processes showing similar shape, thus a quantitative approach to describe their stochastic geometry is necessary. One of the basic geometric characteristics of these processes is the intensity (i.e., mean total length per unit area or volume). Here, a general computational-statistical approach is proposed for the estimation of this quantity from digital images of the process, thus only planar fibre processes or projections of processes onto a plane are considered. Differently from approaches based on segmentation, it does not depend on the particular application. The statistical estimator of the intensity is proportional to the number of intersections between the process under study and an independent motion invariant test fibre process. The intersections are detected on the real digital image by a learned detector, easily trained by the user. Under rather mild regularity conditions on the fibre process under study, the method also allows to estimate approximate confidence intervals for the intensity, which is useful especially for comparison purposes

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
