CKM matrix elements from K and D decays on the lattice
No full textThe Standard Model (SM) is the modern theory that best describes the fundamental interactions among particles. So far the SM has allowed physicists to obtain outstanding agreement between experimental data and theoretical predictions. Despite the success in describing fundamental particle physics, we know that the SM is not the final theory of interactions, but just a low-energy approximation of a more general theory.
Many of the problems of the Standard Model involve flavor physics, i.e. the branch of physics that studies the transitions between quarks of different flavors. It is thus of crucial importance to determine the fundamental parameters of flavor physics, which in the quark sector are the quark masses and the CKM matrix elements. These quantities, being quarks confined into the hadrons, are non directly measurable in the experiments nor predictable from theory alone. Therefore, a combination of experimental and theoretical inputs is required in order to determine these parameters.
The experimental inputs needed to calculate the elements of the CKM matrix are the decay rates of leptonic and semileptonic decays of pseudoscalar mesons.
Calculating numerically with lattice QCD (LQCD) the hadronic quantities entering the theoretical expressions for these decay rates and comparing these calculations with the experimental measurements allows us to determine the CKM matrix elements.
In this thesis we present an accurate determination of the CKM matrix elements Vus, Vcd and Vcs, through the leptonic and semileptonic decays of K and D mesons. To this purpose we used the gauge configurations produced by the European Twisted Mass (ETM) Collaboration with four flavors of dynamical quarks (Nf = 2 + 1 + 1), which include in the sea, besides the light up and down quarks, assumed to be degenerate, also the strange and the charm quarks with masses close to their physical values. These gauge configurations were generated using the Iwasaki gauge action and the Twisted Mass action at maximal twist.
We have extracted the decay constants and the form factors at different values of the quark masses and lattice spacing, allowing us to extrapolate to the physical point through either ChPT or a polynomial expansion. We also studied the 2 dependence of the form factors, by performing a multi-combined fit of its 2, and 2 dependences.
The results for the matrix elements Vus, Vcd and Vcs coming from leptonic and semileptonic decays show a very good agreement, and can be combined with the determinations of Vud and Vcb to perform unitarity tests of the CKM matrix
Definition of seismic input for structural safety evaluation : two case studies: seismic response of concrete dams; dynamic soil-structure interaction of the Leaning Tower of Pisa
No full textThe definition of the seismic input is an essential step for the evaluation of the dynamic response of structures. Strategic structures like dams or monumental buildings which are part of the architectural heritage require a specific study in order to evaluate the seismic input, especially in a country with medium-high seismicity like Italy. This work uses a hybrid approach for the evaluation of the seismic hazard, by matching the probabilistic and deterministic methods in order to obtain a controlling earthquake. The geophysical parameters of this event are then used for the selection and adjustment of spectrum-compatible accelerograms. The procedure is applied to two case studies: the first is represented by two concrete dams, for which the dynamic response is evaluated through a step-by-step method: starting from simplified analyses to obtain dam base sliding to more accurate analyses which can allow an estimate of the expected damage on the structure. The second case study the dynamic response of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is assessed, first through an identification of the critical issues in the existing studies on the topic, then by defining the seismic input considering soil-structure interaction and the recent geophysical tests performed in the Square of Miracles.La definizione dell'input sismico è un punto fondamentale per la valutazione della risposta dinamica delle strutture. Strutture strategiche quali le dighe o edifici monumentali che fanno parte del patrimonio architettonico necessitano che l'input sismico venga valutato con uno studio ad hoc, specialmente per un territorio caratterizzato da una sismicità medio-alta quale quello italiano. Nella presente tesi di dottorato viene presentato un metodo "ibrido" per la valutazione della pericolosità sismica, attraverso il quale combinando i tradizionali approcci probabilistico e deterministico si ottiene un terremoto di scenario. I parametri geofisici di questo evento sismico vengono quindi utilizzati per la selezione di accelerogrammi spettro-compatibili. La procedura proposta è stata quindi applicata a due casi studio di riferimento: nel primo caso a due dighe in calcestruzzo, per le quali è stata calcolata la risposta dinamica con un approccio step-by-step, partendo da analisi semplificate di scorrimento alla base fino ad arrivare ad analisi accurate in 3D con la valutazione del danno atteso. Nel secondo caso è stata valutata la risposta dinamica della Torre pendente di Pisa, dapprima analizzando gli studi esistenti ed individuandone le criticità, quindi definendo l'input sismico alla base tenendo in considerazione l'interazione suolo-struttura e le prove geofisiche eseguite nella Piazza dei Miracoli
Writing the resistance: Ghassan Kanafani and Bobby Sands : an exploration into literature and cinema
No full textThis study is an exploration into the writing of resistance which has not yet attained sufficient study in the world of literature. It focuses on the development of the literature of resistance found in modern Arabic and Irish writings. Thus, an account of the Major works of the iconic Palestinian writer Ghassan Kanafani and the Irish writer Bobby Sands will be investigated. In addition, it discusses the cinematic adaptations of the selected writers’ literary texts. This involves a detailed analysis of Returning to Haifa and Men in the Sun by Ghassan Kanafani, and Writings from Prison by Bobby Sands. A thorough investigation in the cinematic adaptations was conducted, concentrating on The Survivor by Seifullah Dad, Return to Haifa by Kassem Hawal, Al-Makhduun (The Duped) by Tawfiq Salih, and Hunger by Steve McQueen.
Concepts like resistance, Nakba (Palestinian catastrophe), loss of land, trauma, identity, and exile are analysed and examined in the course of the selected literary texts through textual and contextual approaches. In fact, it attempts to analyse the literary texts from a cultural approach, in addition to the historical, political and social backgrounds of the events that shaped the resistance literature in Arabic and Irish writings. It explores the collective and individual memory of the Palestinian catastrophe and the Irish struggle for freedom, and how this contributed toward the construction and the development of new types of characters.
The definition of resistance literature and its defining parameters revealed that there is a pioneering and powerful political role assigned to it, as writing turns out to be a tool in the cultural resistance through its use of symbols, characters and metaphors. Both Ghassan Kanafani and Bobby Sands considered writing as a platform of expression for their struggles, and this is explained thoroughly in this research
