Another type of “old tales retold”. Translation and self-translation, intertextuality and self-intertextuality in Zhang Ailing’s works
No full textThis papers deals with Zhang Ailing’s (1920-1995) posthumous novel, Xiao tuanyuan 小团圆 (Little reunions), written in the 70s of last century but completed just before her death, and finally published only in 2009, which is an example of the continuous manipulation of the same narrative materials used in previous works, and re-presented here through a politics of self-translation and self-intertextuality.
In translating this novel one is confronted with a complex “mosaic of quotations” as Kristeva says, and self-quotations, and is dragged into a forest of meanings derived from the juxtaposition of a variety of external “voices” that mix up with the internal voice of the author. This Bachtinian or babelian quality of the novel, in other words its pluri- and interdiscursivity, challenges the translator, who is called not only to reconstruct the original sources of the allusions, but is also caught between the need of disambiguation and the respect of the intertextual connections implied by the text, he/she has also to cope with the deliberate narrative fragmentation adopted by Zhang

No full textDuring this last decade, halogen and chalcogen bonds (XB and ChalB) have increasingly raised interest in the scientific community. According to IUPAC, the term halogen bond describes the intermolecular interaction occurring between a halogen acting as a Lewis acid and a Lewis base]. XB represents one of the so-called σ-hole interactions (σhI) with relevance evidence in biology, recognition processes and in crystal engineering. So far studied in vacuum and in solid state, such interactions have been less investigated in solution. However, they could be useful in chiral recognition, in separation] and in organocatalysis. Investigating effective audio guiding. A multimodal comparison of the genre in Italian and English
No full textThis book proposes a multimodal investigation of fifty professional city audio guides, with an in-depth, and contrastive, analysis of Italian, British, Irish and American audio guides. Here described as a script-based form of public speaking, the audio guide genre is analysed both at the macro-level (structure and content organisation) and at the micro-level (stylistic features and communication strategies), including the ‘soundscape’ (music, sounds and prosodic features of speech). The rich examples highlight similarities and differences to be found between Italian and English strategies aimed at accessibility and visitor involvement. ‘Accessibility’ and ‘involvement’ are indeed the key reference criteria for the discussion of results, which is framed within an Anglo-American public speaking model in order to define the strategies that make the audio guide effective. The results are then condensed into a set of prototype guidelines for translating or creating effective audio guides. This practical focus makes the book of interest not only to academics in the field, but also to lecturers and students of English language and translation, cultural heritage and tourist communication, as well as professionals in the area of audio-visual technology-mediated cultural heritage promotion
