Umanesimo e tecnologia.
About the territorial evolution of the Middle Aterno Valley since the 16th century. Historical cartography and geographical technologies for an analysis of the countryside of L’Aquila, Italy
This research analyses the territorial evolution of the Middle Aterno Valley in the modern age through the study of the representation of the geographical context in historical cartography. The contribution recalls, in the first part, the specific maps depicting Abruzzo from the second half of the 16th century onwards, and in the second part it dwells on locally commissioned representations for smaller portions of the territory, the latter being inscribed in the legal-territorial dispute around the restoration of the integrity of the city-territory, broken by the enfeoffment of the castles sealed by a royal decree in 1529. The last part of the work is focused on georeferencing elements of the Italian Military Geographic Institute’s “25V” series by using the tools and functions of Google Earth Pro, in order to provide a better understanding of the study area’s local features in a three-dimensional environment
An Analysis of Geographical Differentials in Relation to Water Losses: A Regression-Based Approach to Investigating Potential Contextual Factors
The multifaceted nature of water resource analysis remains a highly relevant and increasingly critical issue, especially in light of the growing urgency posed by both anthropogenic pressures and natural factors. Beyond its fundamental role as a source of life, water serves as a primary input for several key economic sectors, including agriculture, industry, and energy. This study, based on recent data on water losses released by ISTAT, aims to develop a geographical analysis that combines analytical modeling with cartographic representation, linking the identified gradients to contextual territorial factors. The findings may offer valuable guidance for stakeholders and policy makers in the filed, while also providing useful insights to inform the strategic allocation of National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) funds
Social Theory, Normative Criteria, Political Diagnosis. Questioning three levels of Nancy Fraser’s Critical Theory of Capitalism
In the paper the author examines in depth three levels of Nancy Fraser’s Critical Theory of Capitalism. The first order of issues concerns Fraser's social theory, the clarification of the emancipatory potential of modern societal differentiation. The second order of issues concerns the normative level of Fraser's critical theory. The point the author wants to ask is whether in Fraser’s new conception of capitalism as the structural root of all forms of oppression, she tends to abandon her earlier intuitions, which led to differentiate clearly between forms of oppression based on status differences and forms of oppression based on class. The third concerns the political diagnosis of the time connected with Fraser's theoretical elaboration. Fraser elaborates a very complex and suggestive account of the populist moment. Is this account not in danger of overemphasizing the existence of a clear anti-neoliberal tendency, in all populist movements, and of neglecting instead the often detectable symbiosis between regressive and authoritarian drives, on the one hand, and a model of possessive individualism pushed to the extreme, on the other
Dalla relazione di riconoscimento all’eticità
The paper discusses the recognition theory elaborated by Lucio Cortella in his book: L’ethos del riconoscimento. Starting from the criticalities identified in that theory, the paper offers the outlines of an alternative theory. For Cortella, a good theory of the recognition relationship cannot conceive it as a simple intersubjective relationship: between the interacting subjects, a third instance must be introduced to act as a mediator. For Cortella, however, this third instance is reduced to a minimal ethics of a transcendental nature. After criticising this thesis, another is defended and developed. According to this other thesis, the third instance between interacting subjects must be conceived as a thick ethical background, which includes norms, customs, traditions, forms of relationships and institutions. The conclusion is that a good theory of recognition must be inscribed in a more complex theory of society in which the latter is not reduced to a multiplicity of interactions
Is the emergence of artificial subjectivities endowed with a certain autonomy compatible with Habermas’ theory of discourse? To answer this question, it is necessary, preliminarily, to address the question of the Habermasian subject. In doing so, one observes how machines stand as potential interlocutors. As interlocutors, like the other protagonists in Habermasian discourse, they must aim at understanding and must have a legitimate interest. This opens the field to two orders of problems: (a) are machines capable of understanding? (b) can machines have an interest? Arguments borrowed from the Chinese Room debate show how, in principle, there are no obstacles to the entry of machines into discourse. If machines can participate in discourse, then in what language do they talk to humans? To communicate, humans and machines must resort to translation techniques, known as natural language processing. Translation already places itself outside language, deferring to a shared idea of reality in which to root universal meanings. By placing communication outside language, the entry of machines into discourse seems to checkmate Habermasian theory. However, two further arguments – “the Others mind reply” and the private language argument – make the case that communication between humans and machines poses no different problems than communication between humans alone
