The ‘Play’s the Thing’: The Spectre of the Text and the Actor’s Leib in Contemporary Productions of Hamlet in Divided Germany
No full textIn Germany Shakespeare’s Hamlet became a socio-cultural catalyst that decisively contributed to shaping the nation’s identity. From the eighteenth to the twentieth century, “Hamletology” relied on idealising constructs that progressively alienated the “spirit” (Geist) of Hamlet, that is its textual authority, from the “body” (Leib) of performance. In the 1960s and 1970s the productions by Adolf Dresen and Benno Besson in East Germany and by Peter Zadek and George Tabori in West Germany challenged the long-standing German tradition of sacralising the Shakespearean text. Taking Robert Weimann’s distinction between locus and platea and his notion of the “dual authority” of text and performance as a point of departure, this essay shows how these stagings restored the centrality of the performer’s physical presence and histrionic skills. Working with new stage-oriented translations, Dresen and Besson foreground the tensions between thought and action, idealism and material reality, language and gesture as acts of resistance against official ideology and the generational authority of the fathers. By contrast, Zadek and Tabori develop postmodern and psychoanalytic interpretations centred on an eroticised, wounded or diseased actorial body to expose, through theatrical artifices, cross-dressing, improvisation and the disruption of scenic illusion, the brutality of political power and post-war society’s persistent inability to confront its past. The statement “The play’s the thing” thus emerges not as an abstract maxim but as a definition of theatrical materiality, implying the dependence of the spectral Shakespearean text on the actor’s body in order to renew itself in the interplay between actor and spectator

No full textOver the last years, the translation of humour has been subject to criticism, especially regarding the issues connected with the audiovisual world (dubbing and subtitling). In the case of literary translation of humour, this has certainly aroused even less interest. This consists of two elements: on one side, the literary translation and, on the other, the translation of humour. Both represent the core of the old debate on the concepts of translatability and untranslatability. Starting from it and bringing to the table practical examples, such as, among others, Eduardo Mendoza, Santiago Lorenzo and Enrique Jardiel Poncela, this paper is intended to offer a translation method that aims to overcome the idea that pragmatic equivalence is to be preferred to semantic and stylish equivalence of humour literary texts. This study aims to analyze the translation of the cultural elements in a text, the metaphor as the basis of incongruous or absurd speech, the literacy of semantic interpretation of phonological units, etc…

No full textThe aim of this article is to identify a dimension related to animality in bodily experience. The thesis is that animality is a dimension of the body on the borderline between identity and foreignness. The main question is: can a description of the relationship between body and animality shed light on the way we experience corporeality? To answer this question, I will use Bernhard Waldenfels’concept of the experience of the alien and Helmuth Plessner’s biophilosophy. Waldenfels speaks of moments of strangeness in the corporeal self. These are moments in which the subject experiences its own body as identical with itself and at the same time as other than itself. Plessner suggests the idea of an animal form remaining embedded in the human body through his description of the various levels of the organic. The experience of the alien will therefore be related to the animal dimension in the living body to suggest that animality can be considered among the experiences of the alien

È stata messa in luce l'intersezione tra ricerca scientifica e alpinismo evidenziando come entrambi contribuiscano alla comprensione e alla conservazione di ecosistemi fragili come i ghiacciai. Si è discusso dell'impatto delle attività umane ed è stato presentato il progetto Ice Memory, volto a preservare campioni di ghiaccio per le future generazioni

No full textIn this article, in memory of Prof. Corrado Bonfanti, some of his activities of collaboration with the middle school of Mariano del Friuli are remembered on particular occasions: the participation of students of some classes in “La Matematica dei Ragazzi” (Trieste, March 2006), in the FEST - International Science Media Fair (Trieste, May 2007) and in the “Science under 18” festival (May 2011). On these occasions, Prof. Bonfanti made available to the students some machines from his precious collection, to supplement the instrumentation and materials of the small school museum, held lessons in the classroom and held conferences on the history of calculation and calculation tools, offering advice and fundamental help to students engaged in illustrating the history of computer science and the principles of computer operation to visitors to their laboratories.In questo contributo in memoria del Prof. Corrado Bonfanti vengono ricordate alcune sue attività di collaborazione con la Scuola secondaria di primo grado di Mariano del Friuli in particolari occasioni: la partecipazione degli studenti di alcune classi alla manifestazione “La Matematica dei Ragazzi” (marzo 2006), al FEST - Fiera Internazionale dell'Editoria Scientifica (Trieste, maggio 2007) e al festival “Scienza under 18” (maggio 2011). In tali occasioni il Prof. Bonfanti ha messo a disposizione dei ragazzi alcune macchine della sua preziosa collezione, a integrazione della strumentazione e dei materiali del piccolo museo scolastico, ha svolto lezioni in classe ed effettuato conferenze sulla storia del calcolo e degli strumenti di calcolo, offrendo consigli e un aiuto fondamentale agli studenti impegnati a illustrare ai visitatori dei loro laboratori la storia dell’informatica e i principi di funzionamento del computer

No full textThe aim of this paper is not to propose a comparative analysis, but rather an introductory reflection in order to highlight, starting with the figure of Apollo, the methodological cautions necessary for a historical-religious analysis concerning the status of ancient polytheisms. It is mandatory to consider the historiographical awareness in the course of historical-religious research as an extraordinary resource in order not to nullify rigorous research on such a complex topic that has recently been addressed through interpretations that are difficult to evaluate. Furthermore, it is necessary a special attention to the correct evaluation of ancient sources in their historical context
