    No full text
The text deals with the development prospects of a cross-border cultural Ecosystem between Gorizia and Nova Gorica starting from the GO! 2025 event, in which the two towns will be Capital of European Culture (CEC). It is described how a cross-bor¬der cultural Ecosystem can not only enhance the artistic heritage but also promote social and economic cohesion between the towns. Cultural cooperation is proposed as a bridge between the two communities, overcoming historical and linguistic barriers. Various post-event sce¬narios are illustrated, ranging from a potential return to localism to possible synergetic and innovative growth based on long-term cooperation. The success of GO! 2025 will depend on capacity to integrate cultural investments with sustainable economic initiatives, favouring the involvement of local communities and ethnic minorities. The aim is to create a lasting legacy which will transform historical borders into opportunities for intercultural dialogue and innovation

Using Pecha Kucha presentations to improve students’ English public speaking anxiety levels at the University of Trieste

    No full text
This paper is based on research carried out to explore whether preparation for giving a Pecha Kucha presentation would lower English language students’ foreign language classroom anxiety. A small sample of 41 English language students from the University of Trieste completed a 32-item foreign language anxiety (FLA) self-evaluation questionnaire at the start of their language course and 27 completed the questionnaire again prior to being assessed on the basis of a Pecha Kucha presentation. Students answered the questions using a 5-point Likert scale. The results of the two questionnaires and observation of the presentations indicate that 67% of students reported an increase in levels of FLA prior to assessment. No correlation was observed between selfreported FLA levels and the test scores which assessed language retrieval and fluency skills. Reports of lower levels of FLA observed as students delivered their presentations indicated that students’ self-perceived FLA levels did not necessarily tally with those observed by assessors

    Mary Wollstonecraft (1759-1797)

Environmental and economic assessment of alternative bus powertrains: insights from the literature

    No full text
Urban buses provide an important contribution to decreasing the number of pri¬vate cars on the roads, reducing congestions and lowering air emissions. However, most of the circulating buses are still powered by internal combustion diesel en¬gines, whose environmental performance is much worse than that of alternative powertrains such as electric or hydrogen fuel cell buses. The chapter reviews the most recent studies aiming to provide answers to questions such as what is the eco¬nomic and environmental performance of different bus powertrains; what lesson can we learn from jointly considering the economic and environmental aspects; and what are the chances that the more environmentally friendly bus powertrains will prevail in the short and medium term. The main findings are that main advantage of fossil-fuel based buses are their much lower acquisition bus costs. Electric and hydrogen fuel cell buses require much higher initial costs not only for the bus acquisition but also for the charging\refuelling infrastructure. However, the initial capital disadvantage could be, under certain conditions, compensated by the lower annual operating cost, thus making them competitive in terms of to¬tal cost of ownership. There is a sufficiently large consensus that electric, hydrogen fuel cell buses and the biomethane-fuelled buses could reduce the environmental impact of bus operation relative to diesel counterpart along all environmental impact dimensions. According to some others authors, the monetarized environ mental benefits from alternative powertrains are sufficiently high to compensate for their higher monetary costs

Interpreting without intelligence. Rethinking agency in multilingual communication

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming how we communicate, challenging the notion that advanced language skills, and by extension translation and interpreting, are exclusively a human faculty. Following Floridi’s theory of AI as agency without intelligence (2025), we argue that, from an outcome-oriented perspective, AI may, in the short to medium term, be on a trajectory to approach, and in some instances even surpass, human performance in spoken language translation without the need to exhibit human like intelligence. This development suggests that AI applications will act as interpreter agents in their own right, sharing the stage with human professionals, who may, in turn, increasingly rely on AI as a supportive technology. Despite the rise of such non-intelligent but highly capable agents, there might remain compelling reasons to prefer human interpreters, at least in some contexts and conditions. This position paper: (i) proposes a conceptual framework for analysing machine interpreting as an instance of agency without intelligence; (ii) suggests some key dimensions that will shape whether AI or human agents are preferred in specific contexts; and (iii) outlines the implications for research, policy, and practice

The work, dedicated to the portrayal of the female reader in Hellenistic and Imperial art and literature, is divided into two parts. In the first part, images of female readers known from archaeological documentation are interpreted in the light of other types of evidence. The second part focuses on images of female readers found in literary sources to identify stereotypes and their transgressions. By analyzing a series of widely varied examples, the study seeks to clarify the uses and functions of the image of the female reader on one hand, and to reconstruct the contents and contexts of female reading on the other

The growing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems into knowledge production, decision-making, and everyday activities has revamped debates about the nature and scope of trust and reliance. The standard view is to distinguish trust from reliance. While trust is an agent-directed attitude involving ethical and normative aspects, reliance does not require them and can also be directed at objects and processes. According to agent-directed accounts of trust, since AI lacks agency, it cannot be trusted. This article examines three alternative frameworks challenging agent-directed accounts of trust and supporting trust in AI. These frameworks better reflect human-AI interactions, align with everyday language, and fit current AI policy discussions. However, some argue, they overlook the core ethical features of trust. While standard views protect these features, they misrepresent actual user engagement with AI. The problem of whether we can truly trust AI systems or merely rely on them remains a central open problem in AI epistemology, with important policy implications.

A Justification of War in Thomas More’s Utopia. Between Machiavellian Realism and Erasmian Idealism

    No full text
This essay addresses some of the thoughts expressed by Thomas More on just war and interna-tional relationsin the light of Machiavellian realism and theethic-political idealism ascribed to Erasmus of Rotterdam. We propose that More’s idea of “just war” canbe interpreted as an ear-ly modern attempt to legitimise the paradigmatic role of State policies designed to export and impose certain political and cultural models on other States. That same idea might contextually contribute to qualify a paradigm of international relationswhich, by combining realism and ide-alism, preserves a distinctively ethical basis while justifying war as a strategy of reduction of moral evil

The article attempts to consider war as a destructive principle, which is expressed primarily in language. A. Skidan’s poetry collection “Right in the Center“ (“V samoе vot samoe sjuda”, 2024) is analyzed from the point of view of the historiosophical and political works of twentieth-century philosophers who faced the horror of World War II, such as H. Arendt, W. Benjamin, M. Heidegger
