The engagement with Aquinas’s philosophical heritage marks a turning point in the intellectual development of Alasdair MacIntyre. In particular, the Thomistic doctrine of natural law provides the Scottish philosopher with a more comprehensive framework for grounding ethics not only at the individual level but, more importantly, at the level of the community. This paper examines how MacIntyre engaged with Aquinas’s doctrine of natural law and adopted its key features as a foundation for the ethical and political order. Through MacIntyre’s interpretation of Aquinas’s ideas, it also becomes possible to highlight certain aspects of the Dominican master’s arguments
Potential and hallucinations of AI in ELT: Balancing innovation and scepticism with critical insight
As generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) increasingly permeates educational domains, English Language Teaching (ELT) is undergoing a profound transformation. Drawing on theoretical frameworks, reflective pedagogy, and recent classroom applications, this paper explores the dual nature of AI integration in ELT, presenting both its innovative potential and the challenges posed by AI-generated inaccuracies, or ‘hallucinations’. By examining contemporary AI-driven platforms, such as ChatGPT, Twee.ai, Natural Reader, Gemini, as well as image-generation tools like DeepAI, the article demonstrates their applicability to real-world classroom contexts, including writing support for Cambridge exam preparation, adaptive reading tasks, and multimodal resources for learners with special needs, with a primary focus on how AI can enhance engagement, personalisation, and accessibility in ELT. Simultaneously, it addresses the limitations of AI-generated content, such as inaccuracies, biases, and ethical concerns, emphasising the importance of pedagogical mediation and critical digital literacy, with a call for responsible AI integration and continuous professional development. Ultimately, it argues that AI should serve as a complement – not a substitute – for human judgment, creativity, and contextual awareness in language education, where cultivating critical thinking among learners and educators is essential to balance innovation and enthusiasm with ethical responsibility
Matematica in gioco
The article starts by exploring the proposition that “ethnicity exists if you want it to exist”. This means that a group’s wish to be ethnic derives from the fact that its common characteristics stand as a resource for the political affirmation of its personality. The proposition has many factors supporting it. The first is that the term “etnia” and its use are relatively recent. In his 1830 “Dizionario dei Sinonimi” Niccolò Tommaseo speaks of popolo, genti, schiatta and nazione but not of etnia, gruppo etnico or etnicità. Secondly, the meanings, role and functions of ethnicity vary from one culture to another, and even more so from one civilisation to another. A third source of diversification is represented by the niche in which an ethnicity takes shape – in a city or in a rural setting. The fourth factor is that the characteristics taken as being defining of ethnicity present disconnections, fractures and incongruences which can only be overcome by processes of cosmesis, reconstruction and ra¬tionalised linearity. The fifth reason is that the work of ethnicisation is not undertaken by all groups. The sixth reason is that ethnicity arises, develops and is maintained, but it can also disappear. There are factors which stand as advantages in the definition of ethnicity as a so¬cial and political construct. Many of these factors are applied to the demographic dimension of ethnicity and of states, letting the numbers do the talking and setting them in relation to the results of national censuses. In particular the article explores the changeable concept of ethnicity, stated in sociological terms as a variable. The author refers this variability not so much to the specific characteristics attributed by the literature to ethnic groups as such (lan¬guage, culture, political and social history, territory and economy), but rather to the degree of consciousness of their specificity and the degree of manifestation and use of that specificity. The consciousness of belonging to a group that may be qualified as ethnic runs along what may be described as a continuum from weak to strong. The consciousness of an ethnic group taking shape is weak, but equally weak is that of an ethnic group which no longer feels that ethnic membership is a value worth conserving. It is strong when the sense of belonging is firmly deep-rooted. The other source of variability is the form of the manifestation and use of ethnicity. It may be considered implicit when the group can say it is satisfied with its life conditions, explicit when its environment is difficult. A taxonomy is drawn up of how the above form intersect
Patologie sociali e cura dell'anima. Un confronto tra Alasdair MacIntyre e Jan Patočka
The aim of this paper is to compare some characteristic aspects of the ethical-political perspectives of Alasdair MacIntyre and Jan Patočka. We will examine their critical reading of modernity and the centrality assigned to “classical” thought, used to highlight the distorting effects caused by that epochal historical upheaval, as well as the resulting “social pathologies” afflicting the contemporary world. In this way, the diagnoses offered by MacIntyre in his most important works will be compared with some of the instances put forward by Patočka on several occasions, particularly in outlining his idea of“care for the soul”. The great importance given to the problem of how to accomplish a meaningful life will be examined, as well as the peculiar way in which MacIntyre understands the meaning of human flourishing, which is achieved by accepting human existence in its narrative dimension – that is, by conceiving one’s life as something unitary, of which a coherent narrative can be made: as it occurs, in some way, with the philosophical and existential path of Patočka himself
Challenges to the preservation of Ukraine’s Cultural Heritage during the Russo-Ukrainian war: Reflections of experts for the “City and War Project”
Since 2014, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has inflicted vast damage and de¬struction on the country’s diverse cultural heritage. The expert community estimates Ukraine’s cultural losses as already the highest since World War II, and they continue to mount, es¬pecially in areas of active hostilities and those still occupied by the invaders. Furthermore, the Russo-Ukrainian War has triggered a broad reassessment of the cultural heritage in Ukrainian society, causing a ‘turn’ in the understanding of, and attitude towards, culture in general. Recognizing the complexity and momentousness of these developments, in May 2022 a group of scholars from the V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University launched the project “City and War: Destruction, Preservation and Rethinking of the Cultural Heritage of Large Cities in Eastern and Southern Ukraine During the Russo-Ukrainian War”. The project brings together thoughts of cultural experts on the war-related destruction of Ukraine’s cultural heritage and efforts to protect it. The project team has already collected 36 in-depth interviews with Ukrainian specialists. The paper approaches this body of expert opinion as important testimony for understanding the pre-war state of Ukraine’s cultural heritage, its current situation, and further prospects for its preservation and reinterpretation.
