Testimonianza
Ethics and Future Generations. The Transmission of Classical Music Heritage
The article addresses the decline in classical music audiences, particularly among younger gen-erations, and proposes strategies for its revival. Despite a global decrease in listenership, classical music remains an intangible cultural heritage of immense significance, whose preservation con-stitutes a moral duty. Ensuring its transmission to future generations demands a nuanced balance between conservation and innovation. The first section considers three key aspects: (1) UNESCO’s 2003 Convention (2018a) recognizes music as an essential component of cultural heritage that requires protection; (2) classical music shapes cultural identity through notation and tradition, underscoring the need to safeguard both its texts and modes of transmission; (3) ac-cording to Samuel Scheffler (2010), it is future generations that confer meaning upon present practices, making the transmission of classical music both a duty to the past and a responsibility toward the future. The second section examines the role of the music industry in sustaining clas-sical music. The article argues that its decline is not inevitable, but rather a challenge that can be met through collective responsibility, with audience development and innovation playing a crucial role in securing its future
Silvia Niccolai’s book reveals a fertile and original thinking about the delicate balance between change and permanence of the constitution. It provides food for critical thought on the current scenario of constitutional doctrine and on the unfortunately widespread understanding of change as a legal technique responding to constantly changing social needs. In the face of this technicalization of constitutional change, the rejection of an artificial and therefore inhuman idea of law and the constitution is significant, because it is aimed at avoiding the loss the autonomy and non-arbitrariness of the law itself
The paper discusses the so-called neo-Stoic theory of emotions as presented in Martha Nussbaum’s Upheveals of Thought. The thesis I argue is that her theory has only superfi-cial connections with Stoic theory and engages in a series of truisms that by no means make it a new theory, as the author claims
Starting from an analysis of the phenomenology of free action, this paper proposes a hypothesis on the functioning of the mechanisms of choice and a critical analysis of the concepts that sub-stantiate the idea of free will: will, indifference, indecision, personal identity, and deliberation. The absence of concrete experiential evidence concerning free will leads to the formulation of the idea of ‘pseudo-determinism’, and an analysis of the Spinozian theory of freedom introduces a brief illustration of the concept of ‘situated freedom’, the freedom left once the traditional conception of free will has been put aside, based on the awareness of the necessity that governs events as a means of satisfying one’s fundamental will to pursue pleasure and escape pain
After the “New Marx Reading”
Michael Heinrich’s book The Science of Value marks a second generation of a reading of Capital known as the “New Marx Reading,” which began in West Germany in the late 1960s in the context of the student movement. This “new” reading is now 60 years old, and M. Heinrich’s book over 30 years old. The following comments are to be understood as an immanent critique that seeks to confront this reading with its implications, and seeks to make explicit its consequences, ones which the author has drawn elsewhere and explained in greater detail. The comments mainly concern the fixation on commodity exchange and money as a means of exchange. The necessity of a unity of money and value, on the other hand, can be understood through the technique of measure and measurement; in this way the capitalist determination of this unity can also be understood
The title and subtitle of the paper purport to summarise the three phases of Stiegler's thought, techno-logical, pharmacological and neganthropological, and at the same time the title intends to exhibit the differential trace of the relationship with Derrida and deconstruction, from which Stiegler develops his ‘politics of memory’. In the first chapter, we will show the Stieglerian attempt to think technique beyond anthropocentrism and instrumentality, which consists in developing an alternative to the philosophical tradition, and which has epiphylogenesis or artificial memory as its main concept and Epimetheus as its conceptual character. In the second chapter we will describe the characteristics of the ‘politics of memory’ elaborated by Stiegler in his second phase, in which he develops a new critique of political economy focused on the pharmacological role of technology. In the third chapter, we will show the meaning of a possible ‘right to technology’, which in Stiegler's perspective would be intrinsically related to a ‘duty of philosophy’ caused by the urgency of the planetary condition. Finally, in the fourth chapter, we will stress the relation between ‘state of fact’ and ‘state of law’, in the third phase of Stiegler’s thought
