“A Morbid Longing” : Nostalgia in The Secret History (1992) by Donna Tartt
No full textThe aim of this thesis is to explore the role of nostalgia in Donna Tartt’s debut novel The Secret History. The thesis seeks to establish what types of nostalgia exist in the novel and how they work, how nostalgia is romanticized in the novel, and how nostalgia ultimately becomes destructive, detailing the consequences for characters longing for the past. What started as a term for homesickness in the 1600s became an emotion that deals with a sentimental yearning for the past. In conversation with scholars from nostalgia and literature studies, the thesis approaches nostalgia as a diverse emotion, capable of inflicting both comfort and pain, as well as reconstructing memories and identities.
The story is told through the retrospective narration of the main character Richard Papen, who is looking back on his time at the fictional Hampden College. Through his studies, he becomes entangled with a group of students and a teacher who idolize the classical age. The students attempt to revive the past to escape the modern present, with increasingly destructive consequences. Through Richard’s recollection of these events, the study identifies three forms of nostalgia in the novel: personal, cultural, and narrative, using them as a framework through which to explore the levels of nostalgia.
In The Secret History, nostalgia moves beyond a simple longing for the past, towards a genuine, romanticized obsession with a past time. This obsession blurs the lines between fact and fiction, past and present, and results in an imagined identity. Nostalgia is used to distort reality and detach from the present, all in the name of finding meaning with one’s existence.
The findings of this thesis aim to contribute to a larger discussion on nostalgia in literature. The study considers how nostalgia is used as a narrative device and explores how a yearning for the past works within the frames of fiction. The thesis offers insight into how Tartt presents her novel as a form of criticism against nostalgia and the romanticization of an imagined past

No full textEnligt FN:s barnkonvention har barn rätt till skydd och omsorg som främjar deras välfärd. Skolan ska beakta barns fysiska, psykiska och sociala trygghet. Konventionsstaterna ska vidta åtgärder för att förhindra att barn kränks, vare sig av andra barn eller av skolpersonal. Denna studie belyser hur ledare inom elevvården kan bidra till en hälsofrämjande skolmiljö och aktivt motverka mobbning. Genom att undersöka ledarnas strategier, insatser och attityder syftar studien till att fylla kunskapsluckor och stödja utvecklingen av evidensbaserade riktlinjer. Frågeställningarna handlar om hur ledare upplever sitt ansvar i att främja en skolkultur som förebygger mobbning, vilka konkreta åtgärder de vidtar, vilka hinder de möter samt hur de engagerar elevvårdspersonal som skolhälsovårdare, kuratorer och psykologer. Studien bygger på kvalitativ metod med fem enkätsvar och en intervju med elevvårdsledare. Datainsamlingen utformades för att främja reflekterande och öppna svar, och analyserades med kvalitativ innehållsanalys med induktiv ansats.
Resultaten visar att ledare använder individuell handledning, utbildning och samarbete för att stödja elevvårdspersonalen i det mobbningsförebyggande arbetet. Tydliga riktlinjer, regelbundna möten och evidensbaserade metoder lyfts fram som centrala insatser för att skapa en trygg och stödjande skolmiljö. Tidsbrist, resursbrist och organisatoriska oklarheter utgör betydande hinder, men strukturerade insatser och samarbete över yrkesgränser är avgörande för att lyckas i det förebyggande arbetet. Studien betonar också vikten av att involvera föräldrar och elever i mobbningsförebyggande arbete för att skapa en gemensam förståelse och en inkluderande skolmiljö.
Ledarskapet inom elevvården spelar en central roll i att skapa en hållbar och trygg skolmiljö där alla elever har möjlighet att trivas och utvecklas. Studien bidrar med värdefull kunskap om hur ledare kan stödja elevvårdspersonalen och implementera effektiva strategier för att förebygga mobbning. Ytterligare forskning behövs för att undersöka elevvårdspersonalens perspektiv och för att utveckla mer hållbara lösningar för att hantera resursbrist och organisatoriska utmaningar
Porous Metal Oxide Surfaces for Studying Adsorption and Diffusion of Analyte Molecules
No full textAnalyte molecule adsorption and diffusion on porous metal oxide thin films are examined in this dissertation, with a particular emphasis on mesoporous TiO₂ and SiO₂ thin films. The dip coating technique was used to create the films, and XRR, XRD, SEM, and AFM were used for structural characterization to confirm porosity, thickness, and homogeneity. At Åbo Akademi University, the adsorption behavior was investigated using UV-vis spectroscopy for five analytes: ascorbic acid, benzoic acid, methylene blue, and N-719 dye. Furthermore, nano plasmonic sensing (NPS) was used to perform real-time adsorption measurements using analytes N-719 and phospholipids at the University of Helsinki.
The results showed that the morphology of the films and the analytes chemical stability affected how well they performed. Benzoic acid caused redshift issues in quantification, while N-719 and ascorbic acid showed instability. The most responsive and stable probe was found to be methylene blue. It was discovered that phospholipids only adsorb on flat films, most likely because of size exclusion effects of the porous films. Although NPS produced useful kinetic data, it was prone to artifacts such as bubble formation and flow induced signal fluctuations. With possible uses in gas sensing, photocatalysis, and surface chemistry research, these techniques collectively highlight how surface structure and analyte properties interact to determine adsorption behavior in porous metal oxides
