Did earthquakes strike Machu Picchu ?
The Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (Cusco, Peru) is one of the most important archaeological monuments in Peru and worldwide. Machu Picchu is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site and at risk from climatic change. However, the seismic centennial history of Peru reports large earthquakes generated both along the subduction zone (Mw8) and on active crustal faults along the Andean Cordillera (Mw7). It is therefore important to know if Machu Picchu is located in an area of seismic hazard and then to take measures to mitigate potential seismic hazards. Due to the short historical earthquake catalogue (< 500 years) and the absence of significant recent instrumental seismicity in the site's vicinity (radius of < 30 km), our knowledge about the seismic hazard in Machu Picchu is limited. The earthquakes of 1650 and 1950 affected Cusco city and surrounding areas, but without damage descriptions in Machu Picchu (80 km away) (Silgado Ferro 1978). In this study, we make the first attempt to use the analysis of earthquake archaeological effects (EAEs) and their differentiation from the effects generated by slope movements (creep) to investigate the past occurrence of strong earthquakes at the site. The application of geological structural analysis to the deformations observed in Machu Picchu shows two directions of the mean ground movement: N020 degrees E and N110 degrees E. Two earthquakes that affected Machu Picchu during its construction generated these directions. This kind of data should be used in the future to protect this important archaeological site
Aliasing of the Indian Ocean externally-forced warming spatial pattern by internal climate variability
Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) models project an inhomogeneous anthropogenic surface warming of the Indian Ocean by the end of the 21st century, with strongest warming in the Arabian Sea and Western equatorial Indian Ocean. Previous studies have warned that this "Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD)-like" warming pattern could yield more Arabian Sea cyclones, more extreme IOD events and decrease monsoonal rains. Here we show that CMIP5 models also produce an "IOD-like" pattern over the 1871-2016 period, in broad agreement with observations. Single-models ensemble simulations however indicate a strong aliasing of the warming pattern "signal" by the internal climate variability "noise" over that period. While the average Indian Ocean warming emerges around 1950 in CMIP5 and observations, regional contrasts are more difficult to detect. The only detectable signal by 2016 in CMIP5 is a stronger Arabian Sea than Bay of Bengal warming in > 80% of the models, which is not detected in HadSST3 observations. Conversely, observations already detect a stronger Northern than Southern Indian ocean warming, while this signal only emerges by similar to 2060 in > 80% of the models. Subsampling observations to only retain the most accurate values however indicate that this observed signal most likely results from sampling issues in the Southern hemisphere. In light of this large aliasing by internal climate variability and observational uncertainties, the broad agreement between CMIP5 and observations over 1871-2016 may be largely coincidental. Overall, these results call for extreme caution when interpreting spatial patterns of anthropogenic surface warming
Reference points for predators will progress ecosystem-based management of fisheries
Ecosystem-based management of fisheries aims to allow sustainable use of fished stocks while keeping impacts upon ecosystems within safe ecological limits. Both the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and the Aichi Biodiversity Targets promote these aims. We evaluate implementation of ecosystem-based management in six case-study fisheries in which potential indirect impacts upon bird or mammal predators of fished stocks are well publicized and well studied. In particular, we consider the components needed to enable management strategies to respond to information from predator monitoring. Although such information is available in all case-studies, only one has a reference point defining safe ecological limits for predators and none has a method to adjust fishing activities in response to estimates of the state of the predator population. Reference points for predators have been developed outside the fisheries management context, but adoption by fisheries managers is hindered a lack of clarity about management objectives and uncertainty about how fishing affects predator dynamics. This also hinders the development of adjustment methods because these generally require information on the state of ecosystem variables relative to reference points. Nonetheless, most of the case-studies include precautionary measures to limit impacts on predators. These measures are not used tactically and therefore risk excessive restrictions on sustainable use. Adoption of predator reference points to inform tactical adjustment of precautionary measures would be an appropriate next step towards ecosystem-based management
Combining ecosystem indicators and life cycle assessment for environmental assessment of demersal trawling in Tunisia
Purpose The present study assesses environmental performance of seafood production by demersal trawling in Tunisia (Gulf of Gabes) in order to analyze the contribution of each production stage to environmental impacts and to understand drivers of the impacts using life cycle assessment (LCA). Then a set of ecosystem quality indicators were determined using an ecosystem modeling tool, Ecopath with Ecosim (EwE), and were combined with LCA to increase the relevance of both tools' assessments when applied to fisheries. Methods The approach consisted of conducting LCA and calculating ecosystem indicators to provide a complete assessment of trawling's environmental impacts and the ecosystem characteristics associated with seafood production. The functional unit for the LCA was set to 1 t of landed seafood, and system boundaries included several operational stages related to demersal trawling. Several ecosystem indicators from EwE were calculated. Demersal trawling in the exploited ecosystem of the Gulf of Gabes (southern Tunisia) was used as a case study to illustrate the applicability of the approach. Several management plans were simulated and their influence on environmental performance was assessed. Ecospace, the spatial module of EwE, was used to simulate management scenarios: establishment of marine protected areas, extension of the biological rest period, and decrease in the number of demersal trawlers. Results and discussion LCA revealed that fuel consumption by fishing vessels, fuel production, and paint and antifouling production contributed most to environmental impacts. All management plans simulated decreased environmental impacts compared with the baseline scenario. The most effective management plan is extending the rest period, which increases demersal trawler yield and greatly decreases the PPR/catch of demersal trawlers. Conclusions The method developed in this study is relevant for supplementing LCA of fisheries and potentially that of seafood production systems. It provides policy makers with practical information to help implement effective management plans in the context of an ecosystem approach to fisheries

Tree communities and soil properties influence fungal community assembly in neotropical forests
The influence exerted by tree communities, topography, and soil chemistry on the assembly of macrofungal communities remains poorly understood, especially in highly diverse tropical forests. Here, we used a large dataset that combines inventories of macrofungal Basidiomycetes fruiting bodies, tree species composition, and measurements for 16 soil physicochemical parameters, collected in 34 plots located in four sites of lowland rain forests in French Guiana. Plots were established on three different topographical conditions: hilltop, slope, and seasonally flooded soils. We found hyperdiverse Basidiomycetes communities, mainly comprising members of Agaricales and Polyporales. Phosphorus, clay contents, and base saturation in soils strongly varied across plots and shaped the richness and composition of tree communities. The latter composition explained 23% of the variation in the composition of macrofungal communities, probably through high heterogeneity of the litter chemistry and selective effects of biotic interactions. The high local heterogeneity of habitats influenced the distribution of both macrofungi and trees, as a result of diversed local soil hydromorphic conditions associated with contrasting soil chemistry. This first regional study across habitats of French Guiana forests revealed new niches for macrofungi, such as ectomycorrhizal ones, and illustrates how macrofungi inventories are still paramount to can be to understand the processes at work in the tropics. in Spanish is available with online material
Flying to the moon : lunar cycle influences trip duration and nocturnal foraging behavior of the wedge-tailed shear water Ardenna pacifica
Lunar phase and illumination are known to affect nocturnal behavior of many organisms, particularly through predator-prey interactions. Visual predators can benefit from higher light levels to increase their activity, while prey may decrease their activity to avoid predation. The lower number of nocturnal seabirds observed on colonies during full moon nights has been mostly interpreted as a predation avoidance strategy. However, it is also possible that shearwaters take advantage of the moon's illumination to feed also at night, and stay at sea to forage during full moon nights. We used miniaturized GPS-loggers to obtain 179 tracks from 99 wedge-tailed shearwaters breeding in New Caledonia, to investigate moonlight effects on individual behavior. Lunar phase significantly predicted self-provisioning trip duration, with individuals performing longer trips around the full moon. However, this relationship was not significant during chick-provisioning trips when adults have to frequently return to the colony. Adults mostly returned to the colony during moonlit periods, refuting the predation avoidance theory. Tracked individuals showed an unexpectedly high amount of nocturnal foraging activity (28% of total activity), positively influenced by the presence of the moon. δ15N stable isotope values were significantly related to the percentage of nocturnal foraging, but with a weak relationship, impeding our ability to confirm that wedge-tailed shearwaters fed on different prey when foraging at night. Avant de devenir l'enjeu de questionnements globalisés où s'enchevêtrent des normes et des valeurs de plus en plus diversifiées, l'océan est un lieu vécu et pensé par les individus et les sociétés qui le côtoient. Il est porteur de sens et de pratiques sociales, et est indissociable du continuum terre-mer, concept éminemment structurant pour les sociétés du Pacifique. En Nouvelle-Calédonie, territoire d'outremer français du Pacifique engagé dans un processus de décolonisation négociée depuis les années 1980, ce continuum, une « terre-mer » habitée et pratiquée par les Kanak, premiers habitants représentant 40 % de la population, et par d'autres communautés principalement originaires d'Océanie, d'Asie et d'Europe, est l'objet de nouvelles problématisations environnementales génératrices de nouveaux dispositifs aux spatialisations diverses.
En s'appuyant sur des observations et des entretiens menés auprès des habitants comme des individus impliqués dans des associations, des ONGs ou des collectivités publiques entre 2013 et 2016 en Nouvelle-Calédonie, la lecture que les auteurs proposent ambitionne de questionner la dialectique qui s'opère entre pratiques institutionnelles et pratiques dites "traditionnelles" et les normes pratiques qu'elle génère sur la terre-mer.
Dans un premier temps, elles décrivent la terre-mer, le sens et les valeurs qui lui sont accordées et les pratiques qui s'y déploient.
Dans un second temps, elles observent en quoi les transformations de ce dernier siècle dans l'administration des territoires marins et terrestres ont conduit à modifier les enjeux de gestion sur la terre-mer.
La dernière partie analyse les processus de mise en politique de l'environnement marin en Nouvelle-Calédonie via deux objets spécifiques, les aires marines protégées
et les espèces animales marines emblématiques
Deux modeles de population dans un environnement periodique lent ou rapide
Two problems in population dynamics are addressed in a slow or rapid periodic environment. We first obtain a Taylor expansion for the probability of non-extinction of a supercriticial linear birth-and-death process with periodic coefficients when the period is large or small. If the birth rate is lower than the mortality for part of the period and the period tends to infinity, then the probability of non-extinction tends to a discontinuous limit related to a "canard" in a slow-fast system. Secondly, a nonlinear S-I-R epidemic model is studied when the contact rate fluctuates rapidly. The final size of the epidemic is close to that obtained by replacing the contact rate with its average. An approximation of the correction can be calculated analytically when the basic reproduction number of the epidemic is close to 1. The correction term, which can be either positive or negative, is proportional to both the period of oscillations and the initial fraction of infected people
