    Gene expression profiles associated with carboplatin chemoresistance in high-grade serous ovarian cancer

    Carboplatin resistance remains a major challenge in the treatment of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC), the most lethal subtype of epithelial ovarian cancer. To uncover mechanisms driving chemoresistance, we combined patient-derived transcriptomic data with advanced 3D in vitro models. Analysis of TCGA datasets revealed significant upregulation of matrix remodelling gene MMP9. To mimic clinical response, 3D models of four HGSOC cell lines were compared with conventional 2D models. The IC50_{50} values for carboplatin were substantially higher in 3D models, indicating increased chemoresistance, consistent with the results of other studies. This difference is mainly due to reduced drug penetration within the dense 3D spheroid structure, which limits the exposure of cells inside the spheroids to the chemotherapeutic agent. Functional assays showed that carboplatin induced G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and decreased Ki67 levels at IC50_{50} concentrations, suggesting a cytostatic effect. qPCR confirmed geometry- and treatment-dependent significant upregulation of the genes MMP9, TWIST2, ZEB2, and WNT11 in 3D models, that recapitulate the adaptive resistance patterns observed in patient tumours. These results identify MMP9, TWIST2, ZEB2, and WNT11 as promising biomarkers for overcoming chemoresistance in HGSOC. Further functional validation of these genes is needed to confirm the biological significance of the observed correlations

    Modeling the effects of propofol on depth of consciousness

    Anestezija je nadzorovan medicinski postopek, pri katerem z uporabo zdravil dosežemo začasno izgubo zavesti, občutka bolečine in drugih telesnih funkcij, kar omogoča varno izvajanje kirurških ali diagnostičnih posegov. Eden ključnih ciljev splošne anestezije je vzdrževanje ustrezne globine anestezije, ki vključuje stanje hipnoze (izgube zavesti), analgezije (protibolečinskosti) in mišične relaksacije. Globina hipnoze se pogosto spremlja z EEG-osnovanim bispektralnim indeksom, ki podaja vrednosti med 0 in 100, pri čemer vrednosti med 40 in 60 veljajo za optimalno globino anestezije, medtem ko višje vrednosti kažejo na možno zbujanje, nižje pa na pregloboko anestezijo ali supresijo možganske aktivnosti. Za boljše razumevanje in vodenje anestezije se uporabljajo matematični modeli, ki opisujejo potek zdravila po telesu (farmakokinetika) in njegov vpliv na telo (farmakodinamika). Takšno modeliranje omogoča simulacije in napoved odziva pacienta na dano zdravilo. Eden najpogosteje uporabljenih anestetikov je propofol, ki deluje hitro in se pogosto uporablja pri popolni intravenski anesteziji. Pri tem se pogosto uporablja algoritem ciljno krmiljene infuzije, ki na podlagi farmakokinetičnega modela (npr. Schniderjev model) izračuna potreben pretok zdravila za dosego želene koncentracije v biofazi, torej v možganih. Cilj tega diplomskega dela je raziskati fleksibilnost Schniderjevega modela, ki se v praksi pogosto uporablja v ciljno krmiljenih črpalkah za izračun profila pretoka zdravila. S spreminjanjem vseh parametrov tako v farmakokinetičnem modelu kot tudi v farmakodinamičnem smo želeli pokazati, kako dobro dosežemo ujemanje vrednosti indeksa BIS z dejanskimi podatki. S tem postopkom prileganja modela podatkom smo želeli pokazati, da v primeru naših meritev lahko določene parametre zanemarimo in posledično poenostavimo klasično shemo farmakokinetičnega modela, pri čemer smo bili vseskozi pozorni na to, da ne porušimo dinamike, ki je določena z originalnim Schniderjevim modelom. Za dosego cilja raziskave smo uporabili dva matematična modela, in sicer enega za opis farmakokinetike propofola na tarčni prostor in drugega za opis farmakodinamike propofola na indeks BIS v odvisnosti od koncentracije zdravila v biofazi. Izbrana modela smo optimizirali glede na naše meritve in smo ju implementirali in simulirali v programskem okolju MATLAB. Naše simulacije so pokazale, da se pri odstranitvi določenih parametrov farmakokinetičnega modela lahko znebimo enega prostora, ki opisuje slabo prekrvavljena tkiva v človekovem organizmu, pri čemer ne porušimo dinamike samega sistema, pač pa s tem pokažemo, da je originalni Schniderjev farmakokinetični model v kontekstu obravnavane populacije preparametriziran, kar odpira možnosti za njegovo poenostavitev pri uporabi v specifičnih kliničnih ali raziskovalnih scenarijih. Rezultati raziskave tako prispevajo k razumevanju kompleksnosti in omejitev Schniderjevega modela ter nakazujejo možnosti za njegovo prilagajanje ali poenostavitev glede na konkretne klinične podatke. V prihodnje bi takšne poenostavitve lahko pripomogle k bolj učinkoviti individualizaciji anestezije ali uporabi v realnočasovnih sistemih za vodenje anestezije.Anesthesia is a controlled medical procedure in which drugs are administered to induce a temporary loss of consciousness, pain sensation, and other physiological functions, thereby enabling the safe performance of surgical or diagnostic interventions. A central objective of general anesthesia is to maintain an appropriate depth, which encompasses hypnosis (loss of consciousness), analgesia (pain relief), and muscle relaxation. The depth of hypnosis is commonly monitored using the EEG-based bispectral index (BIS), which ranges from 0 to 100. Values between 40 and 60 are generally regarded as optimal, while higher values may indicate inadequate anesthesia and the risk of awakening, and lower values suggest excessively deep anesthesia or even suppression of brain activity. To improve the understanding and management of anesthesia, mathematical models are often employed to describe drug distribution within the body (pharmacokinetics) and their effects (pharmacodynamics). Such models allow for simulations and predictions of a patient’s response to anesthetic drugs. Among the most widely used agents is propofol, a fast-acting anesthetic commonly administered in total intravenous anesthesia. In this context, target controlled infusion algorithms are frequently applied. These rely on pharmacokinetic models (such as the Schnider model) to calculate the infusion rate required to achieve the desired effect-site concentration, namely in the brain. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the flexibility of the Schnider model, which is widely used in clinical practice in target-controlled infusion (TCI) pumps for calculating drug infusion profiles. By varying all parameters in both the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic models, we sought to evaluate how well the Bispectral Index (BIS) values can be matched with actual patient data. Through this model-fitting procedure, we aimed to demonstrate that, in the case of our measurements, certain parameters can be neglected, thereby simplifying the classical pharmacokinetic model scheme while maintaining the dynamics defined by the original Schnider model. To achieve this goal, we used two mathematical models: one describing the pharmacokinetics of propofol in the effect-site compartment, and the other describing the pharmacodynamics of propofol on the BIS index as a function of the effect-site concentration. Both models were optimized against our measurement data and implemented and simulated in the MATLAB environment. Our simulations showed that by removing certain pharmacokinetic parameters, it is possible to eliminate one compartment representing poorly perfused tissues in the human body, without disturbing the overall system dynamics. This indicates that the original Schnider pharmacokinetic model is overparameterized in the context of the studied population, which opens the possibility for its simplification in specific clinical or research scenarios. The results of this research contribute to a better understanding of the complexity and limitations of the Schnider model and suggest opportunities for its adaptation or simplification based on specific clinical data. In the future, such simplifications could support more efficient individualization of anesthesia or the use of real-time anesthesia control systems

    Optimization of resistance spot weld joints in the leg structure area of a washing machine

    Uporovno točkovno varjenje je pomemben postopek spajanja kovinskih pločevin, kadar ni potrebe, da so spoji vodotesni in plinotesni. V magistrski nalogi je analiziran vpliv razporeditve in števila uporovnih točkovnih zvarnih spojev v predelu nog pralnega stroja na natezne statične in dinamične lastnosti ohišja pralnega stroja. Namen raziskave je bil optimizirati razporeditev in število uporovnih točkovnih zvarnih spojev na nogah pralnega stroja z vidika zmanjšanja napetosti, povečanje togosti in zmanjšanja proizvodnih stroškov. Raziskava je vključevala natezne statične simulacije v programu Ansys na modelih sprednjih in zadnjih nog pralnega stroja, s katerimi so bile analizirane različne konfiguracije uporovnih točkovnih zvarnih spojev. Na podlagi rezultatov je bila izbrana optimalna izvedba pozicij in števila uporovnih točkovnih zvarnih spojev, ki je izkazovala nižje napetosti in manjšo deformacijo ob enaki obremenitvi. Potrditev rezultatov je potekala z izvedbo nateznega preizkusa, ki je potrdil nižjo togost in dosegel večje maksimalne napetosti. Z izvedbo modalne analize je bilo potrjeno, da spremembe v razporeditvi in številu zvarnih spojev ne vplivajo na dinamični odziv ohišja pralnega stroja. Trajnostni preizkus z več kot 1200 cikli pranja ni pokazal poškodb ali deformacij na uporovnih točkovnih zvarnih spojih, kar potrjuje ustreznost optimizirane izvedbe za dolgoročno uporabo.Resistance spot welding is an important process for joining sheet metal components when watertight or gastight joints are not required. This master’s thesis investigates the influence of arrangement and number of resistance spot welds in the leg structure area of a washing machine on tensile, static, and dynamic properties of the housing structure of washing machine. The main objective of the research was to optimize the weld layout and number of joints to reduce stress concentrations, increase structural stiffness and lower production costs. The study included static simulations performed in Ansys on models of front and rear leg structure, where various configurations of resistance spot weld were analysed. Based on the results, an optimal configuration and number of resistance spot welds was selected, showing lower stress levels and smaller deformations under equal loading conditions. Experimental tensile testing confirmed higher stiffness and lower maximum stresses of the optimized design. Modal analysis demonstrated that changes in weld arrangement and number did not significantly affect the dynamic behaviour of the washing machine housing. A durability test with more than 1200 washing cycles revealed no visible damage or deformation of the welds, confirming the suitability of the optimized configuration for long-term operational use

    The Russo-Ukrainian conflict: the impact of the dispute on the EU and the role of the USA and China

    Magistrsko delo se osredotoča na rusko-ukrajinski konflikt, katerega začetek sega v aneksijo Krima leta 2014 in doseže vrhunec z obsežno invazijo leta 2022. V raziskavi so analizirani njegov vpliv na Evropsko unijo in vlogi Združenih držav Amerike in Kitajske. Preučevanje temelji na interdisciplinarnem pristopu, ki vključuje vidike mednarodnih odnosov, geopolitike, varnosti in gospodarstva. Cilj dela je raziskati, kako konflikt vpliva na evropski varnostni okvir, energetsko politiko in notranjo politično kohezijo EU. Posebna pozornost je namenjena vlogi ZDA pri krepitvi obrambnih zmogljivosti NATA ter diplomatski in gospodarski podpori Ukrajini. Kitajska se v okviru konflikta postavlja na nevtralen, vendar preračunljiv položaj, s katerim utrjuje svoje strateške interese v evrazijskem prostoru, zlasti v okviru gospodarskega sodelovanja z Rusijo. Evropska unija se na vojne dogodke odziva z enotnimi političnimi, varnostnimi in gospodarskimi ukrepi, kar vključuje sankcije proti Rusiji ter pomoči Ukrajini. Konflikt je izpostavil potrebo po večji strateški avtonomiji EU in razkril notranja nesoglasja med državami članicami. Delo prav tako nudi pregled diplomatskih možnosti in prihodnjih scenarijev z namenom iskanja praktičnih poti za mirno rešitev konflikta. Zaključki prispevajo k razumevanju sodobnih varnostnih izzivov in strateškega ravnotežja v interakcijah med Zahodom, Rusijo in Kitajsko.This master\u27s thesis focuses on the Russo-Ukrainian conflict, which began with the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and reached its peak with the large-scale invasion in 2022. The research analyzes its impact on the European Union and the roles of the United States of America and China. The study adopts an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating aspects of international relations, geopolitics, security, and economics.The aim of the thesis is to explore how the conflict affects the European security framework, energy policy, and the EU’s internal political cohesion. Special attention is given to the role of the USA in strengthening NATO\u27s defense capabilities and in providing diplomatic and economic support to Ukraine. China, within the context of the conflict, takes a neutral yet calculated position, thereby reinforcing its strategic interests in the Eurasian space, particularly through economic cooperation with Russia.The European Union has responded to the war events with unified political, security, and economic measures, including sanctions against Russia and assistance to Ukraine. The conflict has highlighted the need for greater strategic autonomy within the EU and has exposed internal disagreements among member states. The thesis also offers an overview of diplomatic options and future scenarios, aiming to identify practical pathways for a peaceful resolution of the conflict. The conclusions contribute to a better understanding of contemporary security challenges and the strategic balance in the interactions between the West, Russia, and China

    Prognostic relevance of mutations in plasma cell-free DNA and extracellular vesicle DNA in patients with pancreatic cancer​

    Uvod. Rak trebušne slinavke kljub napredku na področju diagnostike in zdravljenja ostaja bolezen s slabo prognozo. Z analizo krožečih oblik DNA v tekočinski biopsiji bi lahko bolje predvideli potek bolezni in posamezniku ustrezno prilagodili zdravljenje. V naši raziskavi smo želeli ovrednotiti vlogo tekočinske biopsije pri zaznavanju za tumor značilnih genetskih sprememb (mutacij), spremljanju odgovora na zdravljenje in napovedovanju kliničnega izida pri bolnikih z rakom trebušne slinavke. Hipoteze. 1. Z analizo prostocelične DNA in DNA zunajceličnih veziklov dosežemo enako uspešnost določanja tumorskih mutacij kot z analizo DNA, izolirane iz ob operaciji odvzetega tumorskega tkiva. 2. Večji delež za tumor značilnih mutacij v prostocelični DNA oziroma DNA zunajceličnih veziklov pred resekcijo tumorja odraža večjo razširjenost oz. neresektabilnost tumorja in je povezan s slabšim celokupnim preživetjem. 3. Po radikalni resekciji tumorja v prostocelični DNA oziroma DNA zunajceličnih veziklov ne zaznamo za tumor značilnih mutacij, prisotnost za tumor značilnih mutacij v prostocelični DNA oziroma DNA zunajceličnih veziklov pa omogoča zgodnje zaznavanje ponovitve ali napredovanja bolezni. Metode. V raziskavo smo vključili 83 bolnikov s histološko potrjenim rakom trebušne slinavke, ki so bili operirani z namenom kirurške resekcije tumorja. Bolnikom smo pred operacijo ter na kontrolnih pregledih en, šest in dvanajst mesecev po operaciji odvzeli vzorce krvi, iz katerih smo izolirali prostocelično DNA in DNA zunajceličnih veziklov. Kot referenčne vzorce za iskanje za tumor značilnih mutacij smo uporabili arhivirane vzorce tumorskega tkiva, odvzetega ob operaciji, fiksirane v formalinu in vklopljene v parafin. V izolatih DNA smo določili prisotnost in delež najpogostejših za tumor značilnih mutacij v genih KRAS, TP53, SMAD4 in CDKN2A. Molekularno-genetske analize smo izvedli s pomnoževanjem tarčnih odsekov DNA s kompetitivno alelno-specifično verižno reakcijo s polimerazo (castPCR) in z digitalno verižno reakcijo s polimerazo (dPCR). Rezultati. S castPCR smo v DNA, izolirani iz tumorskega tkiva, najpogosteje zaznali mutaciji KRAS p.G12D in TP53 p.R273H. Ti mutaciji smo izbrali za nadaljnjo analizo DNA iz tumorskega tkiva in longitudinalnih vzorcev prostocelične DNA z dPCR. Izolacijo in analizo DNA zunajceličnih veziklov smo izvedli v podskupini 10 izbranih bolnikov, vendar zaradi majhnega števila izoliranih kopij analiza DNA ni bila uspešna. V prostocelični DNA smo ob operaciji izbrani mutaciji zaznali pri manjšem deležu bolnikov kot v tumorskem tkivu. Zaradi nizkega deleža mutacij v prostocelični DNA nismo zaznali statistično značilne povezave med deležem izbranih mutacij v DNA iz tumorskega tkiva in prostocelični DNA ob operaciji. Delež mutacij v prostocelični DNA je bil ob operaciji deloma povezan s predoperativno razširjenostjo bolezni. Delež mutacij v longitudinalnih vzorcih prostocelične DNA ni kazal jasne povezanosti s kliničnim potekom bolezni. Zaključek. S tekočinsko biopsijo nismo mogli v celoti nadomestiti analize tkivne DNA, še zlasti pri omejeni bolezni. Večji delež mutacij v prostocelični DNA ob operaciji je sovpadal z večjo razširjenostjo bolezni, ni pa bil povezan s preživetjem. Delež mutacij v prostocelični DNA tudi ni bil uporaben za spremljanje poteka bolezni. Izsledki naše raziskave v okviru uporabljene metodologije ne podpirajo uporabe tekočinske biopsije z analizo krožečih oblik DNA pri obravnavi bolnikov z rakom trebušne slinavke.Introduction. Despite advances in diagnostics and treatment, the pancreatic cancer prognosis remains poor. Circulating DNA analysis in liquid biopsy could enable better prediction of disease course and allow for personalized treatment. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the role of liquid biopsy in detecting tumour-specific mutations, monitoring treatment response, and predicting clinical outcome in patients with pancreatic cancer. Hypotheses. 1. Analysis of cell-free DNA and extracellular vesicle-associated DNA achieves comparable success rate in identifying tumour-specific mutations as the analysis of DNA isolated from surgically resected tumour tissue. 2. A higher proportion of tumour-specific mutations in cell-free DNA or extracellular vesicle-associated DNA prior to tumour resection reflects greater disease burden or tumour unresectability and is associated with poorer overall survival. 3. After radical tumour resection, tumour-specific mutations cannot be detected in cell-free DNA or extracellular vesicle-associated DNA, while their presence enables early detection of disease recurrence or progression. Methods. We included 83 patients with histologically confirmed pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma who underwent surgery with curative intent. Blood samples were collected before surgery and at follow-up visits one, six, and twelve months postoperatively for cell-free DNA and extracellular vesicle-associated DNA isolation. Archived formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples were used as reference material for identifying tumour-specific mutations. Molecular analyses were performed using competitive allele-specific PCR (castPCR) and digital PCR (dPCR) to determine the presence and frequency of selected common somatic mutations in four pancreatic cancer driver genes: KRAS, TP53, SMAD4, and CDKN2A. Results. Using castPCR, the most frequently detected mutations in tumour tissue DNA were KRAS p.G12D and TP53 p.R273H. These mutations were selected for further analysis of DNA from tumour tissue and longitudinal samples of cell-free DNA using dPCR. Isolation and analysis of extracellular vesicle-associated DNA were performed in a subgroup of 10 patientshowever, mutation detection was limited by low DNA yield. In contrast to primary tumour analysis, the detection of selected mutations in cell-free DNA was markedly lower. Due to the low frequency of mutant alleles in cell-free DNA, we did not observe a statistically significant correlation between the mutation frequency in tumour tissue and cell-free DNA at surgery. The frequency of mutations in cell-free DNA samples at surgery was partly associated with preoperative disease burden. No consistent association was observed between the mutation frequency in longitudinal cell-free DNA samples and the clinical course of the disease. Conclusion. Liquid biopsy could not completely replace tissue DNA analysis, especially in cases of limited disease. A higher proportion of mutations in cell-free DNA at the time of surgery correlated with greater disease burden but was not associated with survival. The proportion of mutations in cell-free DNA was also not useful for monitoring disease progression. The results of our study, within the framework of the methodology used, do not support the use of liquid biopsy with analysis of circulating DNA forms in the treatment of patients with pancreatic cancer

    The COST Action ‘European Network on Lexical Innovation’ (ENEOLI) has conducted a comprehensive survey in October-November 2024 regarding the methods, practices, tools, and resources used in the study and documentation of lexical innovations, including neologisms and novel senses. The 249 respondents from 50 countries represented linguists, lexicographers, terminologists, translators, software developers, and educators. Respondents could indicate more than one field of expertise, and 169 noted theirs as linguistics (70%), 107 lexicography (44%) and 105 terminology (43%). In this paper, we focus on the responses of those indicating their field of expertise as lexicography and/or terminology, and we analyzed their approaches to the identification and documentation of neologisms, the composition of project teams and the use of corpora and digital tools. Special attention is given to training pathways and professional needs, offering insights into the evolving skills required in the field of lexical innovation

    Kvantitativna strojna analiza razporeditve čustev na primeru Visoške kronike

    V prispevku predstavljamo nekatere možnosti kvantitativne strojne analize razporeditve čustev na primeru zgodovinskega romana Visoška kronika Ivana Tavčarja. Besedilo romana razdelimo na odstavke in s pomočjo leksikona čustvenih asociacij SloEmoLex 1.0 vsakemu odstavku strojno pripišemo številsko razporeditev osmih čustev: jeza, strah, žalost, gnus, presenečenje, pričakovanje, zaupanje in sreča. Rezultate vizualiziramo in jih na kratko interpretiramo glede na vsebino romana ter nakažemo potencialne koristi tovrstne strojne obdelave in možnosti za prihodnje delo pri strojni obdelavi čustev v slovenski književnosti.This article presents some options for a quantitative automatic analysis of the distribution of emotions using Ivan Tavčar’s historical novel Visoška kronika (The Visoko Chronicle) as an example. The novel’s text is divided into paragraphs, and the SloEmoLex 1.0 Lexicon of Word– Emotion Associations is used to assign a numerical distribution of eight emotions to each paragraph: anger, fear, sadness, disgust, surprise, anticipation, trust, or joy. The results are visualized and briefly interpreted in terms of the novel’s content. In addition, several potential benefits of this automatic approach are presented, along with several possibilities for future work related to the automatic analysis of emotions in Slovenian literature

    Vasja Klun (1987) je predstavnik mlade slovenske poezije. Za začetek njegovega pesnjenja so bili odločilni rap ter tudi rock in pop oz. sploh pop kultura (popularne kulture), vendar je svojo poetiko izvirno dodeloval ob iskanju neposredne izpovedi in prečiščenega izraza. V njegovih pesmih imajo pomembno vlogo njegova različna čustvena doživetja in posamezne osebe, zlasti ženske, ki so z njim povezane erotično, ljubezensko ali naključno. Njegove pesmi nosijo tudi pečat njegove lastne življenjske filozofije in mediteranskega (obmorskega) okolja.Vasja Klun (born 1987) is a Slovenian poet of the younger generation. Rap, as well rock and pop or pop culture (popular cultures) in general, were decisive in his decision to write poetry, and he has been reworking his poetics in an original manner by searching for direct expression and a refined style. In his poems, an important role is played by his various emotional experiences and individual, mainly female, characters, who are connected to him erotically, amorously, or by chance. His poems also bear the hallmarks of his own life philosophy and the Mediterranean (seaside) milieu

    Prispevek obravnava koncept nostalgije in umišljene domovine pri Francetu Papežu na podlagi njegovega dela Zapisi iz zdomstva. S pomočjo teoretskih okvirjev Svetlane Boym in Salmana Rushdieja analizira, kako Papež kot izseljeni avtor oblikuje simbolno in časovno zamrznjeno podobo predvojne Bele krajine. Prispevek pokaže razpetost med osebno refleksivno nostalgijo in kolektivno, ideološko obarvano rekonstrukcijo domovine v argentinski skupnosti.This article explores the concepts of nostalgia and imaginary homeland in the work Zapisi iz zdomstva (Notes from Exile) by France Papež. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Svetlana Boym and Salman Rushdie, it analyzes how Papež, as an émigré writer, constructs a symbolic and temporally suspended image of prewar region of White Carniola. The article highlights the tension between personal, reflective nostalgia and the collective, ideologically shaped reconstruction of homeland within the Slovenian community in Argentina

    Prispevek skozi geopolitično in geoekološko prizmo analizira impresionistične pesmi Srečka Kosovela (1904–1926), ki jih je navdihnila njegova domača kraška pokrajina. Kras, kot ga je doživljal pesnik, je bil ravno v fazi preoblikovanja. V medvojnem času je bil pod italijansko okupacijo mejno ozemlje, katerega pokrajino so močno spreminjali črni bori kot posledica politike pogozdovanja. Kras se je Kosovelu razkril hkrati kot »tuja domovina« in »domača tujina«, iz te izkušnje liminalnosti pa je vzniknila poetika, ki v temelju oblikuje njegove kraške pesmi.This article explores the impressionistic poetry of Srečko Kosovel (1904–1926), inspired by his native Karst landscape, through a geopolitical and geo­ecological lens. The Karst Plateau, as experienced by the poet, was undergoing transformation. During the interwar period, this area was part of Italy, bordering Kingdom of SCS, and its landscape was being heavily changed by the growth of Austrian pine, a result of afforestation policies. To Kosovel, the Karst revealed itself as both a »foreign homeland« and a »familiar foreign land«from this experience of liminality emerged a poetics that fundamentally shapes his Karst poems
