Prenatal Exposure to Androgens and Gender Socialisation Effects on Children’s Academic Interests

    No full text
Previous studies have documented gender differences in fields of study as well as interest in school subjects. Boys are on average more interested in mathematics, and girls show greater interest in languages. The extent to which these disparities are the result of biological or environment influences is still an open debate. On the one hand, brain organisation theory suggests that physiological and behavioural differences may be linked to prenatal hormone levels. On the other hand, sociological and psychological perspectives highlight the importance of gender socialisation. This paper combines biological, psychological, and sociological perspectives to examine the emergence of gendered academic interests in children. The study draws on data from 9‑year-old children from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Our results suggest that for both boys and girls, medium to high compared with low prenatal exposure to circulating maternal testosterone might increase children’s interests in mathematics relative to English, although results vary depending on how prenatal testosterone exposure is measured. As the distributions of prenatal androgen exposure and the relationships with maths versus English interests are very similar for boys and girls, prenatal androgen exposure does not contribute to explaining gender differences in academic interests. However, we find some evidence that the relationship with parental gender socialisation varies by prenatal androgen exposure. A more gender-equal parental division of domestic work is more strongly associated with less gendered academic interests for girls with low prenatal androgen exposure and for boys with medium to high androgen exposure.

Is informal telework a threat to work-family reconciliation? Comparing the implications of formal and informal telework for work-family conflicts

    No full text
The study analyses the relationship between formal and informal telework and work-family conflicts using the job-demands and resources (JD-R) model. Previously, the model has more frequently been applied to understand the implications of telework without distinguishing between formal telework and informal telework outside contracted working hours. We conducted cross-sectional OLS-regressions on pilot data from the European Social Survey compiled in 2019. The results show that formal telework is associated with fewer, and informal telework with more work-family conflicts. While formal telework appears as a resource, informal telework rather functions as a demand. Additional analyses report that formal teleworkers are nevertheless at risk of work-family conflicts because formal telework often goes hand in hand with informal telework and, thus, work-family conflicts. Practical Relevance : While formal telework can facilitate the reconciliation of work and family life, employees are at risk of counteracting this dynamic when telework is conducted informally during paid or unpaid overtime. The findings suggest that it is important for managers, HR managers and employees to be aware of the potentials and risks of frequent teleworking that come with the ability to work anytime and anywhere in order to avoid unintended consequences. In this context, an organisational culture that values adherence to schedules and ‘switching off’ at the end of the workday, even under conditions of high workloads and low personnel resources, can be beneficial.

    No full text
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) also increasingly need effective information technology (IT) management to remain competitive. However, compared to large enterprises, SMEs often do not have the resources, employer appeal, or need to employ a full-time Chief Information Officer (CIO). To bridge this gap, a growing number of experts around the world have begun offering CIO services on a part-time basis. In this way, SMEs gain access to experienced and skilled IT executives at a fraction of the cost and without long-term commitments. While these so-called "Fractional CIOs" are already adding value in practice, there is still almost no scientific research on this new phenomenon. Therefore, in a larger research project with a total of 62 Fractional CIOs from 10 countries, a definition, engagement types, and success factors were derived. This study summarizes the results and relates them to the German market by interviewing three Fractional CIOs/CTOs from Germany. The following four Fractional CIO engagement types are found to offer value for SMEs in various situations: Strategic IT management, Restructuring, Rapid scaling, and Hands-on support. Further, the study finds that trust, top management team support, and the Fractional CIO's integrity are the most important factors for Fractional CIO engagement success. The results are largely confirmed for the German market by three interviewed Fractional CIOs. While the Fractional CIOs cannot specify the exact reasons for the role's low adoption, they emphasize its value potential for the German market

Paternalism attitudes and the happiness value of fundamental freedoms

    No full text
Governmental regulations and prohibitions may effectively reduce self-harming behavior, but might also restrict personal freedom rights. This paper investigates into individuals’ preferences for the trade-off between being protected from taking self-harming actions by the state, and the desire to be free to choose. We introduce the Paternalism Preference Index to measure this preference. Our results indicate considerable heterogeneity in how individuals support, or object to, such governmental prescriptions. More importantly, we show the importance of the paternalism preference in a survey on life satisfaction during the Covid-19 pandemic. We find a reversed relationship between the preference for paternalistic state interventions and the valuation of personal freedoms. Individuals who prefer to have a larger choice set at the expense of committing potentially self-harming actions derive a higher value from personal freedoms in terms of life satisfaction

Cui prodest? The heterogeneous impact of green bonds on companies' ESG score

    No full text
With the aim of providing a comprehensive framework of analysis, the paper develops a signaling model in which green bonds are able to increase the environmental performance of companies, as they allow investors, endowed with environmental preferences, to uncover the adoption of clean production processes. Companies relying on green technologies are rewarded by lower financing costs. In particular, green bonds encourage more polluting firms to embark on the transition toward a cleaner production. Relying on a large sample of companies located worldwide and implementing a difference-in-difference strategy, we successfully test the model implications. The analysis also reveals that green bonds issued to finance mitigation policies are the most effective in improving companies' environmental performance. In line with model predictions, these bonds display the largest yield differential (greenium) with respect to their conventional peers

Internationaler Gerechtigkeitsindex: Betrachtungen von sechs Dimensionen in 34 Ländern

    No full text

Extractive Taxation and the French Revolution

    Get PDF
We study the fiscal determinants of the French Revolution, exploiting plausibly exogenous variation in the salt tax - a large source of royal revenues and one of the most extractive forms of taxation of the Ancien Régime. Implementing a Regression Discontinuity design (RDD), we find that parts of France subject to a higher salt tax experienced more revolts against the monarchy between 1750 and 1789. These effects already appear in the 1760s, but become stronger over time and peak in the 1780s. Combining the RD model with variation in local weather conditions during the 1780s, we document that droughts amplify the effects of the salt tax on revolts by increasing wheat prices and activating latent discontent. Then, we connect the discontent generated by the salt tax to the French Revolution. First, we provide evidence that riots spread more quickly in high tax areas. Second, we show that areas burdened by a higher salt tax report more complaints against the salt tax in the list of grievances collected by the king in the spring of 1789. Third, we document that legislators representing areas with a higher salt tax are more likely to demand the end of the monarchy and to support the death penalty for the king

Outlier detection in network revenue management

    No full text
This paper presents an automated approach for providing ranked lists of outliers in observed demand to support analysts in network revenue management. Such network revenue management, e.g. for railway itineraries, needs accurate demand forecasts. However, demand outliers across or in parts of a network complicate accurate demand forecasting, and the network structure makes such demand outliers hard to detect. We propose a two-step approach combining clustering with functional outlier detection to identify outlying demand from network bookings observed on the leg level. The first step clusters legs to appropriately partition and pools booking patterns. The second step identifies outliers within each cluster and uses a novel aggregation method across legs to create a ranked alert list of affected instances. Our method outperforms analyses that consider leg data without regard for network implications and offers a computationally efficient alternative to storing and analysing all data on the itinerary level, especially in highly-connected networks where most customers book multi-leg products. A simulation study demonstrates the robustness of the approach and quantifies the potential revenue benefits from adjusting demand forecasts for offer optimisation. Finally, we illustrate the applicability based on empirical data obtained from Deutsche Bahn

Migrant returnees as (anti‐)migration messengers? A case of street‐level representative bureaucracy in Senegal

    Get PDF
International organizations and foreign‐funded NGOs run campaigns in Senegal to raise awareness of the perils of irregular migration. To increase their effectiveness, these organizations often enlist local migrant returnees to share their personal migration experiences and transmit an anti‐irregular migration message to their compatriots. This article examines whether policymakers' assumptions regarding the representativeness of migrant returnees operating as (anti‐)migration messengers in terms of shared identities corresponds to reality at the street level. It draws from theories of street‐level bureaucracy and representative bureaucracy and is based on 31 qualitative interviews with migrant returnees and experts. The study shows that migrant returnees engaged in migration information campaigns are not as representative of the local population as envisaged by policymakers, potentially impacting policy outcomes. They stand out from their compatriots in terms of skillsets and social status – partly because of the selection mechanism employed by organizations and partly because of the training and capacity‐building efforts directed at migrant returnees
