    Use of the partograph - current thinking

    The partograph (sometimes called partogram) is a labour monitoring tool that is used in countries world-wide to enable early detection of complications so that referral, action or closer observations can ensue. Whilst the partograph has received global support, from health professionals, there are concerns that it has not reached its full potential in improving clinical outcomes. This has resulted in several variations of the tool and a plethora of studies aimed at exploring the barriers and facilitators to its use. In this chapter we will discuss the history of the partograph, outlining how it has evolved over time. We will also suggest reasons why the tool may not be meeting the needs of all practitioners. In particular, we will explore partograph use as a complex intervention, suggesting that its success is likely to be dependent on multiple contextual factors

    Supporting a post-16 student with learning difficulties using human givens therapy

    Aims: Supporting children and young people who develop mental health difficulties is a central aim of government policy, with statistics suggesting that those with learning difficulties are particularly vulnerable. Educational psychologists (EPs) are well-positioned to offer therapeutic support to post-16 students. This paper provides an example of using human givens (HG) therapy to promote the emotional health and well-being of one post-16 student. Method: Within a single case study design, a HG-based intervention was offered to a self-referred, 17-year-old, male student, attending a specialist setting. Qualitative data was collected from multiple sources, including a process transcript of the sessions and researcher field notes, and analysed using thematic analysis. Findings: Within this single case study, data suggested that the HG- based intervention had a positive impact on the student. Specifically, adaptation of the approach helped make achieving the student’s self-set goal more accessible within the school context and supported his self-efficacy and motivation. Facilitators identified as supportive in delivering interventions included: use of tangible resources; clear steps to a goal; and embracing silence within sessions. Limitations: This is a single case study design, with one 17-year old participant. The needs of other students, as well as their response to intervention, may vary. The fact that the lead author was the facilitator might engender positive bias. Conclusion: The HG approach used in this paper could provide a template for EPs offering therapeutic support to students with learning difficulties.<br/

    Ataxia Telangiectasia (A-T) is caused by biallelic mutations in ATM and conferspredisposition to cancer, with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) being rarely observed.We investigated an AML in an A-T patient for secondary genetic events by performingwhole exome sequencing of serial disease samples. The results revealed a typicalcomplex karyotype AML with no evidence of TP53 mutations. Additionally an activatingKRAS mutation, a loss-of-function G3BP1 mutation and a T-cell acute lymphoblasticleukaemia associated gain-of-function IL7R exon 6 mutation, were all present fromAML diagnosis. Loss of ATM was crucial to the diversity and features of genomicinstability observed

    A review of early findings within the collaborative research programme MUZIC – “Mechanistic Understanding of Zirconium Corrosion”

    This paper comprises a review of some of the early research carried out within the MUZIC Mechanistic Understanding of Zirconium Corrosion) consortium, which began in 2007, and was the first significant collaborative UK research programme in the field of zirconium-based nuclear fuel cladding in the new millennium. MUZIC was funded by the UK research council (EPSRC), with strong support from nuclear industry in the UK, France, Sweden and the USA. MUZIC is widely seen as the research programme that kick-started the vibrant new UK research activity in zirconium-base fuel cladding, utilising a modern collaborative approach through forming a seamless team between academia and the nuclear industry. The focus of MUZIC was understanding the root cause of the cyclic aqueous corrosion kinetics of commercial nuclear-grade zirconium alloys. The consortium focused particularly on the role of Sn in reducing the time of a corrosion cycle and therefore enhancing the overall corrosion kinetics

    Ambient and Wearable Sensor Fusion for Abnormal Behaviour Detection in Activities of Daily Living

    Abnormal behaviour detection in the performance of Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) can be an indicator of a progressive health problem or the occurrence of a hazardous incident. This paper presents an initial sensor fusion approach for data collected from ambient (contact and thermal) and wearable (accelerometer) sensors in a smart environment to improve the recognition of the main steps that are part of ADLs. An accurate recognition of the main steps involved in ADLs can support detecting abnormal behaviour in the form of deviations from the expected steps. The smart environment considered is a smart kitchen and the ADLs considered are: (i) preparing and drinking tea, and (ii) preparing and drinking coffee. These ADLs are deemed to have many occurrences during a typical day of a (elderly) person. The sensor fusion approach presented considers the extraction of the most relevant features of the data collected from the types of sensors used and the subsequent data analysis to recognise the main steps involved in the ADLs. Results show that this initial sensor fusion approach presented slightly improves the recognition of the main steps involved in the ADLs compared to the results obtained with just the wearable data

    Estimating Networks of Sustainable Development Goals

    An increasing number of researchers and practitioners advocate for a systemicunderstanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through interdependency networks. Ironically, the burgeoning network-estimation literature seems neglected by this community. We provide an introduction to the most suitable estimation methods for SDG networks. Building a dataset with 87 development indicators in four countries over 20 years, we perform a comparative study of these methods. We find important differencesin the estimated network structures as well as in synergies and trade-offs between SDGs. Finally, we provide some guidelines on the potentials and limitations of estimating SDG networks for policy advice
