The interpersonal processes of non-suicidal self-injury: A systematic review and meta-synthesis
Background: Understanding the processes underlying non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is important given the negative consequences of this experience. Qualitative research has the potential to provide an in-depth exploration of this. There has been limited research regarding the interpersonal processes associated with NSSI, therefore, a meta-synthesis was conducted to investigate this. Methods: A search of PsycINFO, Medline, Web of Science and CINAHL electronic databases from date of inception to November 2020 was conducted. In total, 30 papers were included in the final review. A meta-ethnographic approach was utilised to synthesise the data. Results: Two overarching themes were found. Within ‘Powerful relational dynamics’, NSSI was cited as a response to participants becoming stuck in aversive or disempowering relational positions with others. Within the ‘Taking matters into their own hands’ subtheme, NSSI was reported as a way for participants to get essential yet unavailable interpersonal and emotional needs met.Limitations: Several included papers did not comment on the researcher-participant relationship, which may have affected qualitative results. A small number of potentially eligible papers were unavailable for synthesising. Conclusion: Findings provide a more nuanced investigation of the interpersonal processes underlying NSSI. Consistent with relevant theories, NSSI appears to be a way of mitigating difficult interpersonal experiences or meeting essential interpersonal needs. NSSI may be engaged in as an alternative to other, less damaging ways to cope. An argument is made for a more empathetic understanding of NSSI and the use of relational interventions. <br/
Micromechanical testing of a thermally grown oxide on a MCrAlY coating
The stiffness and fracture toughness of a thermally grown oxide (TGO) on a MCrAlY coating were measured by the microcantilever bending technique. TGO cantilevers were prepared by a focused ion beam and bent in-situ by a nanoindenter in a scanning electron microscope. The Young’s modulus and fracture toughness of the TGO were determined to be 352 GPa and 4.4 MPa·m1/2, respectively. The measurement results were compared with mechanical properties of the TGOs and bulk α-Al2O3 ceramics reported in the literature to develop a mechanistic understanding of the microstructural features governing the stiffness and fracture toughness of the TGO
The Home Screen Media Environment of Saudi Toddlers
The past few years have witnessed a rapid increase in children’s use of screen media. Despite the widespread use of technology in Saudi Arabia, research on screen media use among young children is scarce. The current study provides a comprehensive picture of screen media use and literacy practices among 220 1- to 3-year-olds in Saudi Arabia using an online survey. Findings showed that the vast majority of these children had started using screens before the age of 2 years. Saudi toddlers’ overall screen time was about 3 hours a day which exceeds screen time recommendations by the World Health Organization. Iftah Ya Simsim (the Arabic version of Sesame Street) was children’s favourite TV show, YouTube was their favourite mobile media app, and children’s songs were their most frequently viewed content type on mobile media. The amount of time toddlers spent with screens was higher than their engagement with reading. More than 40% of the children were never read to, and one quarter had no children’s books at home. Results of this study provide a better understanding of children’s screen use and reading practices; an important first step in guiding the development of research-driven recommendations for all stakeholders on the use of screens by young children
Service Research Priorities in Turbulent Times: A Multiple Stakeholder Approach
Transformative changes in the societal and service context call out for the service discipline to develop a coherent set of priorities for research and practice. To this end, we utilized multiple data sources: surveys of service scholars and practitioners, web scraping of online documents, a review of published service scholarship, and roundtable discussions conducted at the world’s foremost service research centers. We incorporated innovative methodologies, including machine learning, natural language processing, and qualitative analyses to identify key service research priorities that are critical to address during these turbulent times. The first two priorities—technology and the changing nature of work and technology and the customer experience—focus on leveraging technology for service provision and consumption. The next two priorities—resource and capability constraints and customer proactivity for well-being—focus on responding to the changing needs of multiple stakeholders. Further, we identified a set of stakeholder-wants from the literature and include research questions that tie key stakeholder-wants to each of the four priorities. We believe the set of research priorities in the present article offer actionable ideas for service research directions in this challenging environment
Global guideline for the diagnosis and management of rare yeast infections: An initiative of the ECMM in cooperation with ISHAM and ASM
Uncommon, or rare, yeast infections are on the rise given increasing numbers of immunocompromised and seriously-ill patients. The major pathogens include those of the genera Geotrichum, Saprochaete/Magnusiomyces and Trichosporon species as well as Kodamaea, Malassezia, Pseudozyma (Moesziomyces/Dirkmeia), Rhodotorula, Saccharomyces and Sporobolomyces species. A considered approach to the complex, multidisciplinary management of infections caused by these pathogens is essential to optimising patient outcomes; however current management guidelines are either region-specific or require updating. In alignment with the “One World–One Guideline” initiative to incorporate regional differences, experts from diverse geographic regions analysed the published literature describing the epidemiology and management of the above rare yeasts. This guideline summarizes the consensus recommendations with regards to the diagnostic and therapeutic options for these rare yeast infections with the intent of providing practical assistance in in clinical decision making. Because there is less clinical experience of rare yeast infections and studies on these were not randomized nor were groups compared, most recommendations are not robust in their validation but represent insights using expert opinions and in-vitro susceptibility results. We report in the present manuscript the key features of the epidemiology, diagnosis, antifungal susceptibility and treatment outcomes of Geotrichum, Saprochaete/Magnusiomyces and Trichosporon infections

Is the index efficient? A worldwide tour with stochastic dominance
We conduct a broad study of stochastic dominance efficiency on financial markets. We show that in the long run the vast majority of 17 equity market indices across the globe are inefficient at order two relative to their industry components. In the short run, the past stochastic dominance relation between the index and sub-indices predicts future dominance. Trading rules accounting for the predictability of stochastic dominance improve the out-of-sample certainty equivalents of risk-averse investors. The gains are especially pronounced for European and developing markets, while no consistent outperformance of alternative strategies is found for the S&P 100 and Nikkei 225 indices
Predicting the Bending Rigidity and Shearing Stiffness of Fabric: Based on Three-dimensional Drape Model
In this paper, the problem of inferring fabric mechanical properties based on three-dimensional(3D) fabric drape model and fabric weight was studied. Firstly, the three-dimensional point cloud of draped fabric was scanned via a self-built three-dimensional scanning device followed with triangulation. Then the local linear embedding (LLE) algorithm was used to resample the three-dimensional draped models (triangular meshes). Besides, all meshes resampled with the same uniform discrete points have the same triangular topology (vertex number and triangle index). Thirdly, the distribution function of curvature(DFC) of resampled 3D mesh was extracted. At last, four neural networks with the combination of fabric weight and DFC as input were constructed to predict the bending rigidity and shearing stiffness separately.The result shows that the correlation coefficient between true warp bending rigidity and predicted result could reach 0.925. The correlation coefficient between true warp shearing stiffness and the predicted result is 0.7953. The correlation coefficient between true weft bending rigidity and the predicted result is 0.857. The correlation coefficient between true weft shearing stiffness and the predicted result is 0.605.<br/
Facilitators and Barriers of Co-production of Services with Children and Young People within Education, Health and Care Services
Aim: This systematic review of research studies published between 2014 and 2019 explores facilitators and barriers to successful co-production and its application to practice. Rationale: Through legislation, ‘co-production’ underpins practice to promote social justice for children and young people (CYP) with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). Yet little is known about how to engage in co-production successfully. Method: Through systematic searching of research databases, a total of 21 papers was found, seven of which met inclusion criteria and were found to be of at least medium level methodological quality and relevance. Findings: The included research papers highlight the importance of leadership support for co-production to enable CYP to really ‘be heard’, as well as practical considerations around transport and support to attend co-production meetings. Creative methods chosen by CYP, flexibility to the needs of CYP and valuing CYP’s time and views were significant factors in creating change through co-production. Implications: A lack of funding, commitment and awareness by leaders and organisations to ensure that CYP can participate over time, often however, led to unsustainable co-production endeavours. Limitations: A significant gap was identified within the co-production of Education services, with the majority of research papers developing co-production and social justice practice within Health and Social Care organisations. Conclusions: Implications for development of practice and further research are considered. <br/
