Analysis of the Swedish market for energy efficient renovations

    No full text
The building sector accounts for approximately 40% of EU:s energy consumption and 36% of energy related emissions. Member countries of the EU have therefore long worked to increase the energy efficiency of buildings through renovations. The latest revision of EPBD from 2024, as part of the new Renovation Wave strategy, aims at using new policy instruments to accelerate the renovation rate and reach the EU:s target of a climate neutral building sector by 2050. To evaluate the impact of this new policy in Sweden, Actor Network Theory and its translation process have been applied. The study was conducted through qualitative interviews and thematic analysis using QualCoder to capture the perspectives of human actants, alongside a document analysis to represent non-human actants. Results indicate that the network is highly complex, involving several principal actants that give rise to conflict of interests and hinders the mobilisation of the network. Real estate companies raise several concerns of EPBD’s feasibility and direction, which divide the network. A central concern is the focus on energy efficiency rather than overall climate impact, lack of systematic inscription of roles and responsibilities, and the misalignment between EPBD:s claims and Sweden's primary energy sources and circumstances of its building stock. While policy instruments in EPBD aim at addressing several of these conflicting interests, just the apprehensions of these issues challenge the implementation and effect of them. However, even with these concerns, several real estate companies are working to increase their rate of renovation and energy efficiency through optimization tools. It is therefore likely that the renovation rate will rise due to EPBD from 2024 but that the divided network might hinder a full implementation reaching the entire building stock in Sweden

I Am V: Player Identification in Cyberpunk 2077

    No full text
This study investigates how players' choices during character creation in Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) shape their identification with their character, particularly in a first-person game where players rarely see their avatar. Through semi-structured interviews with five experienced players and thematic analysis, this research explores multiple approaches to character creation: strategic optimization, narrative alignment, self-expression, identity affirmation, and creative pursuit. These approaches result in varied player-character relationships ranging from “separate beings” to “direct embodiment.” Despite limited character visibility, participants actively sought visual confirmation through mirrors, inventory screens, and photo mode. Personal factors, including gender identity, cultural background, and physical characteristics, significantly influenced character creation choices, while game features like the life path system provided narrative frameworks enhancing identification. The findings demonstrate that character creation serves diverse psychological functions beyond self-representation and that first-person perspective often enhances rather than diminishes identification by enabling direct embodiment. This research contributes to game studies by challenging assumptions about the relationship between character visibility and identification, providing valuable insights for game designers creating character systems and researchers studying player psychology and digital identity formation

Verification and Welfare : Evaluating the Impact of Peace Agreement Implementation on Post-Conflict Education Outcomes

    No full text
This thesis examines whether the implementation of verification mechanisms in peace agreements influences welfare outcomes in post-conflict countries. The core problem that is addressed is the gap in understanding how post-conflict countries allocate fiscal resources. The research question is as follows: Does implementation of verification mechanisms in comprehensive peace agreements increase welfare spending in post-conflict states? The thesis goes beyond current literature that has established that such mechanisms can reduce military expenditure and focuses on whether verification mechanisms redirects it towards social development. A panel data analysis of 29 post-conflict countries between 1989 and 2015 was conducted using a fixed effects model (and a random effects model for robustness testing). The primary independent variable is verification implementation level and the dependent variable is school enrollment as a proxy for welfare spending. The initial bivariate results suggested a positive relationship, however as control variables were included the relationship was no longer statistically significant. Instead factors such as residual violence and time since conflict had a greater impact. These results have both academic and policy implications. It suggests that institutional safeguards, such as verification mechanisms, alone are not sufficient to shift fiscal priorities towards welfare investment and that it has to be complemented with other measures

    No full text

Trajectories of sickness absence and disability pension in young working-age adults in Sweden

    No full text
Sickness absence and disability pension (SADP) constitute a major public health concern, yet the heterogeneity in the developmental trajectories of SADP remains poorly understood. We aimed to identify trajectories of SADP in an observational cohort study of 12,721 Swedish twin individuals, born 1975-1986, who were initially invited to health screening surveys in 2005. Through linkage to nationwide registries, individuals were prospectively followed regarding annual days of SADP from 2006 to 2020. Using group-based trajectory modeling, we identified three distinct SADP trajectories in the total sample: 'high-increasing' (4%), 'low-increasing' (13%), and 'low-constant' (83%). Next, using multinomial logistic regression, we found that mental health-related factors such as neurodevelopmental conditions and common mental disorders were strongly associated with the high-increasing and low-increasing SADP trajectories. Furthermore, increasing age, female sex, low/medium educational level, and blue-collar work were found to be associated with higher odds of belonging to the high-increasing and low-increasing SADP trajectories. We did not find any effect of genetic similarity. Overall, close to every fifth individual showed rising SADP trajectories over time. Research is warranted to address the specific support needs of vulnerable young people struggling with mental health conditions, and to identify any actionable barriers to facilitate labor market integration

Determination of prednisolone concentration in human breast milk and plasma of breastfed infants : study protocol of a Swedish multicentre low-intervention clinical trial

    No full text
Introduction Many women need to use medications during breastfeeding. Very few medications have been adequately monitored, tested and labelled with safety information for this use. Prednisolone is one of these drugs. We aim to conduct a multicentre low-intervention clinical trial to determine the concentration of prednisolone in plasma of breastfed infants of lactating women treated with prednisolone. In addition, we will measure the concentration in maternal plasma and breast milk and calculate the daily infant dose (DID) and relative infant dose (RID). Infant cortisol levels will be analysed as a measure of clinical effects in the infants. Methods and analysis The study will be conducted at departments of obstetrics and gynaecology and specialist maternity and paediatric outpatient clinics in Sweden. We aim to include 30 lactating women treated with prednisolone and their breastfed infants. Breast milk and blood will be collected merely to study the secretion of prednisolone into breast milk and transfer to the infant. Participants will be treated with prednisolone according to their physician's prescription. Study visits take place when the infant is approximately 6-8 weeks old. Milk and blood sampling of the mother will be performed at 1 hour after drug intake, in conjunction with the infant being fed. Blood sampling of the infant will be performed 2 hours after the feed. Breast milk and plasma will be biobanked for future research. Recruitment was initiated in 2024 and is ongoing. Patient representatives from the Swedish Rheumatism Association were involved in the planning of the study, and the organisation is providing information about the study on their website.Ethics and dissemination The clinical trial was approved by the Swedish Medical Product Agency (Dnr. 5.1.1-2023-104170). The results will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and disseminated at scientific meetings and through patient organisations' websites.Trial registration number The clinical trial protocol is available via the Clinical Trial Information System at the European Medicines Agency (No. 2023-508913-18-00). It is also registered and publicly accessible at the EU PAS Register (EUPAS 1000000059)

The impact of the ribosomal 16S rRNA modifications on the antibiotic susceptibility and fitness in Escherichia coli

    No full text
The rRNA molecules which make up the two subunits of the Escherichia coli ribosome are extensively post-transcriptionally modified. The specific purpose of each modification is still unknown. It is proposed that they provide a structure for the ribosomal assembly, which would indicate that they are essential. However, previous literature in this area using E. coli shows that when the modification enzymes are removed individually the effects on growth fitness and antibiotic sensitivity are limited. This makes their role in ribosomal assembly unclear. The effect of removing multiple ribosomal modification enzymes is largely unexplored. The position of many of the modifications are found in clusters, usually in the catalytic domains of the ribosome, which are often targeted by antibiotics, indicating that removing the modification enzymes could affect antibiotic sensitivity. Most of the previous studies on strains with these modification enzymes removed were performed with traditional lambda-red that leaves behind FRT scars, which can cause unwanted spontaneous excisions via recombination between the FRT scars. Here, DIRex lambda-red was used to create clean deletions, which does not produce FRT scars and therefore, allows for more reliable analysis of the ribosomal modification enzymes’ role. The results show that there is a fitness cost and change in antibiotic sensitivity due to multiple of the deletions of the ribosomal modification enzymes. For some of the modifications, this is true when that particular site alone is left unmodified, while for other positions, these effects are only observed when multiple sites are modified simultaneously. For example, the methyltransferase RsmG knockout has a big effect on streptomycin resistance but no fitness cost, while the methyltransferase RsmA and RsmF knockouts causes a fitness cost in combination and causes tetracycline and gentamycin resistance respectively. This indicates that the ribosomal modifications significantly affect the interaction with antibiotics and fitness, and therefore, have a significant part in ribosomal function.

Spirit and Assembly in John 21 : The Continuation and Revision of Johannine Ecclesiology

    No full text
This master thesis applies an ecclesiological perspective to the pericopes of John 20:19–23 and John 21. In this context, Johannine Ecclesiology is understood to be interwoven with Johannine Pneumatology, wherefore the thesis proceeds from the notion of an interplay between the Johannine Church and the Johannine Spirit: the Church in the Gospel of John interacts with the Spirit in the Gospel of John to the degree that the Spirit is a prerequisite for the working of the Church in the World. This understanding of Johannine Ecclesiology issues forth from the founding of the Johannine Church in John 20:22, when Jesus breathes on the disciples, wherafter the disciples are inflated with the Spirit and through it are granted the authority to forgive sins at the command of Jesus. In addition, the thesis employs a narrative methodology in the analysis of the biblical texts. The narrative methodology consists of two parts: 1) the analytical category of Johannine Narrative Ideals, in which occurences of narrative ecclesiological ideals and narrative pneumatological ideals are examined, and 2) the theory of Narrative Immersion, in which the possibility of the reader immersively experiencing the narrative is explored, initially by identifying immersive feautures in the texts, in order to put these in relation to the ideals. Furthermore, the thesis employs a social-scientific methodology in the analysis of the socio-historical background of the Johannine texts. In this context, the emphasis is on examining the socio-historical situation of the Johannine community, on the basis of the social-scientific methodology, in light of the texts, particularly whether there are socio-historical differences between John 20:19–23 and John 21. Finally, in light of these perspectives and also in light of the understanding of John 21 as an early addendum to John 1–20, the thesis examines how and why the ideals in John 20:19–23 (and, in a broader sense, John 1–20) are not only continued but also revised in John 21. One of the conclusions of the thesis is that some ideals in John 20:19–23 are revised in John 21, whereas some other ideals in John 20:19–23 are continued or expanded in John 21. The most significant contribution to the research field of Biblical Studies is that the continuity of the prefigurative episcopal collegiality ideal strenghtens the notion of John 1–21 as a coherent literary unity, despite the likelihood that John 21 is an addendum. An important theological contribution is the conclusion of the collegiality between Johannine Church and Johannine Spirit, although that relationship is built upon the notion that the Spirit has authority over the Church and not vice versa. In this context, the theological significance of John 3:8 is established, in which the Spirit blows wherever it wants, which could indicate a Johannine apophatic theology.

Making More Cost of Poor Quality Visible in a Manufacturing Company : A Case Study at Bona Sweden AB

    No full text
The study, which is a case study, highlights how a model can facilitate the work of visualizing the cost of poor quality (COPQ) in a manufacturing organization. COPQ can represent a significant portion of a company’s total costs, up to 40 percent according to studies. However, simple and systematic methods for identifying, measuring, and following up on these costs are often lacking in practice. The aim of the study is to propose how the company can work to ensure that selected key performance indicators (KPIs) are relevant, effective, and aligned with the company’s strategy and business model and how KPIs can be categorized and converted into COPQ within the company’s financial reporting system. A variety of methods (mixed methods) have been used, including interviews, surveys, document analysis, and sensemaking. The results show differences in how concepts from fundamental models are interpreted, as well as a range of KPIs that can be used to calculate COPQ. The proposed model is inspired by the PAF model and links the organization’s quality management system, according to ISO, with existing tools such as SIPOC and stakeholder lists. To strengthen the organization’s ability to visualize COPQ, complementary tools and working methods are suggested, for example through PBSM and checklists to ensure quality in the completion of SIPOC and the creation of KPIs. The results of the study illustrate the importance of a shared understanding within the organization and that strategy, together with policy and culture, forms a vital foundation for working proactively with COPQ
