Magnetic Fields For Production Testing
The goal of this project is to design a method of generating a magnetic field of known magnitude and direction within a test fixture. The purpose of this is to allow testing of a hall-switch. The work is initiated with background research in electromagnetism and a review of the requirements posed on the solution. Following this a solenoid model is developed as a tool for optimizing the design of an electromagnet. When a design is proposed a prototype is created and tests are performed to determine if the design fulfills the requirements as well as measuring properties of the electromagnet. Tests of the final design shows that there is a fast drop in field strength when the electromagnet is moved away from the hall-switch. Therefore it is necessary to keep the distance between them short. The results show that the requirements are fulfilled when the electromagnet is positioned well and a few possible positions are displayed
A functional genomic framework to elucidate novel causal metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease genes
Background and Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MASLD) is the most prevalent chronic liver pathology in western countries, with serious public health consequences. Efforts to identify causal genes for MASLD have been hampered by the relative paucity of human data from gold standard magnetic resonance quantification of hepatic fat. To overcome insufficient sample size, genome-wide association studies using MASLD surrogate phenotypes have been used, but only a small number of loci have been identified to date. In this study, we combined genome-wide association studies of MASLD composite surrogate phenotypes with genetic colocalization studies followed by functional in vitro screens to identify bona fide causal genes for MASLD. Approach and Results: We used the UK Biobank to explore the associations of our novel MASLD score, and genetic colocalization to prioritize putative causal genes for in vitro validation. We created a functional genomic framework to study MASLD genes in vitro using CRISPRi. Our data identify VKORC1, TNKS, LYPLAL1, and GPAM as regulators of lipid accumulation in hepatocytes and suggest the involvement of VKORC1 in the lipid storage related to the development of MASLD. Conclusions: Complementary genetic and genomic approaches are useful for the identification of MASLD genes. Our data supports VKORC1 as a bona fide MASLD gene. We have established a functional genomic framework to study at scale putative novel MASLD genes from human genetic association studies
The Dawn of Digital Transformation : Tracing Needs and Networks in Small-Medium Organizations
This thesis investigates how digital needs are articulated, negotiated, and acted upon within the Baltic University Programme (BUP), a small, resource-constrained, and transnational academic network in the early stages of digital transformation. Rather than treating digitalization as a top-down or purely technical process, the study adopts Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to analyze the relational dynamics through which digital priorities emerge. Drawing on survey responses and semi-structured interviews with BUP stakeholders—including staff, academics, students, and administrators—the study explores the roles of both human and non-human actors in shaping digital change. The findings reveal that digital needs within the BUP are not predefined, but are constructed situationally through daily practices and operational constraints. Central actors such as the Coordinating Secretariat, National Centres, and International Relations Officers are identified as initiators of the transformation process, as they problematize inefficiencies and drive change through their position in the actor-network. Meanwhile, non-human elements such as GDPR and institutional infrastructures exert significant influence, not merely as constraints but as active participants in shaping the digital transformation trajectory. Through this case study, the thesis contributes to the Digital Humanities by demonstrating how digital transformation must be understood as a socio-technical negotiation involving competing priorities, distributed agency, and contingent conditions. It offers a critical, actor-sensitive perspective on how digital strategies can be more effectively designed and implemented in complex, multi-level organizational environments

From Words to Winners : Investigating Liu Cixin’s Bestseller Textual Features with Computational Methods
This study investigates the textual factors behind the global success of Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem trilogy by comparing its themes, plot, and style with his non-bestselling works. Using digital humanities’ distant reading approach, it analyzes all English translations of Liu’s novels (approximately 1.24 million words) with digital tools: Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) for topic modeling, TextBlob for sentiment analysis, and spaCy for stylometric analysis. Findings show minimal textual differences. The trilogy’s themes lean slightly toward hard science fiction, its plot aligns with typical bestseller patterns, and its style is highly consistent with non-bestsellers. Its exceptional market success is largely attributed to contextual factors, including Tor Books’ strategic publishing, the 2015 Hugo Award, cross-cultural narratives, reader engagement, and film/TV adaptations, amplified by a positive feedback loop. This study confirms the potential and limitations of digital humanities in single-author bestseller research and, using the trilogy as a case study, discusses how textual quality and market mechanisms together drive bestseller success
Knowledge organization of funkis-material : A comparative study of Infoteket om funktionshinder and Uppsala Stadsbibliotek
This thesis compares the knowledge organization regarding material about and aimed at people with disabilites at two libraries in Uppsala: Infoteket om funktionshinder, which is a special library about disabilities, and Uppsala Stadsbibliotek, which is a public library. The aim of the comparison is to show different ways of organizing this material at two different types of libraries, as well as their encountered problems, applied solutions, principles the work is based on, and the physical manifestation of the knowledge organization. Three semi-structured interviews were conducted with two representatives from Stadsbiblioteket and one from Infoteket. After the interviews the informants were also contaced via e-mail with a few follow-up questions. Observations of the knowldge organization were made at the two libraries, and documents such as reading and book recommendations, and the classification system SAB-systemet were analyzed. Domain-analysis designed by Birger Hjørland was used as a theoretical perspective and a method to analyze the material. Theoretical perspectives on classification and its consequences by Geoffrey C. Bowker and Susan Leigh Star, as well as warrants as a theoretical concept, were also added. The results show that Infoteket uses their own classification system while Stadsbiblioteket uses SAB-systemet, but places material for people with disabilities on a shelf called Underbara hyllan which deviates from the classification. They base their organizations on a mixture of principles. The main difference is that Infoteket to a greater extent base their work on academic principles compared to Underbara hyllan, which bases it more on the users’ perspective. These principles are also represented in the physical representation of the material, and are connected to the epistemological, ontological and social dimensions of the domains. Comprehensive transcriptome assessment in PBMCs of post-COVID patients at a median follow-up of 28 months after a mild COVID infection reveals upregulation of JAK/STAT signaling and a prolonged immune response
Background: Post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), also known as post-COVID-19 condition (here abbreviated as post-COVID) is an escalating global health issue. The aim of our study was to investigate the mechanisms and clinical manifestations of post-COVID following a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods: We analyzed the gene expression profile in PBMCs from 60 middle-aged post-COVID patients and 50 age-matched controls at a median time of 28 months following a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection. The clinical assessments included intensity of post-COVID symptoms, physical and mental fatigue, depression and anxiety. Sixty-seven participants performed a mild exertion ergometer test with assessment of lactate concentrations. Transcriptome analysis was performed on mRNA selected by poly-A enrichment and SARS-CoV-2 RNA fragments were analyzed using the ARTIC protocol. Results: We identified 463 differentially expressed transcripts in PBMCs, of which 324 were upregulated and 129 downregulated in post-COVID patients. Upregulated genes in post-COVID individuals were enriched for processes involving JAK-STAT signaling, negative regulation of ubiquitination, IL9 signaling, and negative regulation of viral process, suggesting chronic inflammation. Downregulated genes were enriched for processes involving mitochondrial ATP synthesis, and oxidative phosphorylation, suggesting mitochondrial dysfunction. No SARS-CoV-2 gene fragments were detected in PBMCs of patients with post-COVID and no IFN genes were found differentially expressed in post-COVID patients. Post-COVID was associated with elevated lactate levels in blood, both at rest and after a short recovery phase following exertion, suggesting increased anaerobic activity in skeletal muscles. We did not find differences in the transcriptional profiles or clinical manifestations when comparing patients who contracted the infection from early SARS-CoV-2 variants with those who contracted the infection during the period when the Omicron variant was prevalent. Conclusions: Our findings highlight molecular changes compatible with a persistent immune response in PBMCs of post-COVID subjects at a median follow-up of 28 months after a mild infection, supporting the hypothesis that post-COVID is a chronic inflammatory condition. The upregulation of JAK/STAT signaling suggests a potential therapeutic target in post-COVID
"Vi vet att vi gör fel, men vi gör det ändå" : En kvantitativ studie av faktorer som påverkar användares val mellan att skydda eller förenkla vid hantering av säkerhetsfrågor
Många vet att extra säkerhet är viktigt, men ändå väljer de bort den. I denna paradox utforskar vi varför tvåfaktorsautentisering (2FA), trots sin bevisade effektivitet, ofta upplevs som ett hinder snarare än en lösning. Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka hur upplevd användbarhet enligt ISO 9241-11 påverkar individers benägenhet att använda 2FA. Studien baseras på en kvantitativ enkätundersökning med 62 respondenter, där användbarhet mättes utifrån tre dimensioner: efficiency, effectiveness och satisfaction. Resultatet visar att både efficiency och satisfaction har signifikanta positiva samband med faktisk användning, medan effectiveness inte uppvisade någon tydlig påverkan. Studien indikerar att upplevd smidighet och tillfredsställelse är avgörande faktorer för användning av 2FA, vilket har viktiga implikationer för designen av framtida säkerhetslösningar.Many people recognize the importance of enhanced security yet still choose to opt out. This paradox forms the basis for exploring why two-factor authentication (2FA), despite its proven effectiveness, is often perceived as more of a burden than a solution. The purpose of this study is to examine how perceived usability, according to ISO 9241-11, affects individuals’ likelihood of using 2FA. The study is based on a quantitative survey of 62 respondents, where usability was measured through three dimensions: efficiency, effectiveness, and satisfaction. The results show that both efficiency and satisfaction have significant positive correlations with actual use, while effectiveness showed no clear impact. The study indicates that perceived ease of use and a sense of security are key factors in the use of 2FA, which has important implications for the design of future security solutions
Investigation of the increased stack pressure on anode-less lithium batteries
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the most commonly used type of battery today, thanks to its mature chemistry and superior performance. However, as the demand for innovative green solutions continues to increase, so are the requirements for the batteries in terms of their performance, energy density and safety. In this context, whereas the lithium metal battery (LMB) is seen as the next generation LIB, the anode-less lithium metal battery (AL-LAB) could be as an even more advanced solution. Nevertheless, the nascent chemistry of AL-LMB continues to be restrained by various challenges, including inhomogeneous plating of Li and irreversibility of the charge and discharge reaction. With a view to addressing these challenges, this thesis examines the effect of an increased stack pressure for the anode-less configuration. Both the Cu-Li half-cell and LiFePO4 (LFP)-Cu full-cellare studied using galvanostatic cycling. In addition, the LFP-Cu system is studied with acoustic emission (AE) sensing. The thesis concludes that the increase in stack pressure appears to decrease both the overall overpotential for the system and, unexpectedly, the capacity retention over prolonged cycling. The AE sensing results indicates that an increased stack pressure provides less mechanical response compared to cells experiencing no extra pressure. While the direct reason behind these observations has not been identified, it would be reasonable to consider that several factors contribute to such peculiar behavior, including the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer and irreversible loss of Li via parasitic reactions. Additionally, other factors could also be the reasonbehind the performance, such as the choice of separator. However, in order to better understandthe effect of the increased stack pressure for the AL-LMB system, further research is required using additional characteristic techniques to examine above mentioned factor
