    Rethinking the right to landscape in Norra Sorgenfri, Malmö

    Tracing attempts to redevelop Norra Sorgenfri, a partly de-industrialised part of Malmö (Sweden), into an attractive and sustainable inner-city neighbourhood, this chapter critically probes the notion of ‘the right to landscape’ (Egoz et al., 2011a). The story is in a sense a classic story of brownfield redevelopment. Once industries left, artists and the unhoused entered. Once redevelopment work began, they were displaced. But the process nonetheless provides an opportunity for asking questions crucial for a research agenda for the right to landscape, illuminating the interplay of rights-based claims and legally defined rights that permeate planning processes and debates surrounding urban redevelopment. In order to account for this, the chapter argues that the ‘right to landscape’ literature's emphasis on universal human rights should be complemented with more critical approaches to rights in Arendtian scholarship, and with the ‘right to the city’ literature's often more radical political demands

    Is sustainability a priority for architects and architecture firms? : A comparative study on India and Sweden

    The construction industry is a significant contributor to global carbon dioxide emissions, primarily due to insufficient regulation, the inflated cost of sustainable materials, and resistance to changing established processes. Immediate implementation of sustainable practices is necessary to reduce the industry's environmental impact and address climate change. This thesis presents a comparative analysis of sustainability approaches among architects and architecture firms in India and Sweden. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing an interpretive research philosophy and Corporate Social Responsibility as the theoretical framework. Primary data was collected from comparable firms through semi-structured interviews with four firms and seven architects. Consistent with existing literature, architects and architecture firms play a leading role in the conception phase of construction projects. A comparison between Sweden and rapidly urbanizing India reveals significant gaps and best practices in sustainable construction. Notable differences include construction materials, access to sustainable technology, economic limitations, policy frameworks, project financing, and public awareness of sustainability. The findings suggest that Indian architects exhibit a positive attitude toward sustainability, but they face limited opportunities, economic barriers, low societal awareness, and inadequate policy enforcement. In contrast, Swedish architects benefit from established structures and experience in implementing sustainability, with economic constraints as the primary challenge. Swedish architects attribute progress to societal awareness, environmental responsibility, and policy development, while Indian architects identify the absence of these factors as major obstacles. The study concludes that architects and architecture firms have a significant influence on societal outcomes. For small and medium-sized enterprises, Corporate Social Responsibility can contribute to the integration of social and environmental responsibility among stakeholders, thereby advancing sustainable development

    Euclid preparation : LXXII. Three-dimensional galaxy clustering in configuration space: Two-point correlation function estimation

    The two-point correlation function of the galaxy spatial distribution is a major cosmological observable that enables constraints on the dynamics and geometry of the Universe. The Euclid mission is aimed at performing an extensive spectroscopic survey of approximately 20-30 million H alpha-emitting galaxies up to a redshift of about 2. This ambitious project seeks to elucidate the nature of dark energy by mapping the three-dimensional clustering of galaxies over a significant portion of the sky. This paper presents the methodology and software developed for estimating the three-dimensional two-point correlation function within the Euclid Science Ground Segment. The software is designed to overcome the significant challenges posed by the large and complex Euclid dataset, which involves millions of galaxies. The key challenges include efficient pair counting, managing computational resources, and ensuring the accuracy of the correlation function estimation. The software leverages advanced algorithms, including k-d tree, octree, and linked-list data partitioning strategies, to optimise the pair-counting process. These methods are crucial for handling the massive volume of data efficiently. The implementation also includes parallel processing capabilities using shared-memory open multi-processing to further enhance performance and reduce computation times. Extensive validation and performance testing of the software are presented. Those have been performed by using various mock galaxy catalogues to ensure that it meets the stringent accuracy requirement of the Euclid mission. The results indicate that the software is robust and can reliably estimate the two-point correlation function, which is essential for deriving cosmological parameters with high precision. Furthermore, the paper discusses the expected performance of the software during different stages of Euclid Wide Survey observations and forecasts how the precision of the correlation function measurements will improve over the mission's timeline, highlighting the software's capability to handle large datasets efficiently

    Chiral Phonons Arising from Chirality-Selective Magnon-Phonon Coupling

    Chiral phonons are desirable for applications in spintronics but their generation and control remains a challenge. Here we demonstrate the emergence of truly chiral phonons from selective magnon-phonon coupling in inversion-symmetric magnetic systems. Considering bcc Fe as an example, we quantitatively calculate hybridized magnon-phonon quasiparticle states across the entire Brillouin zone utilizing first-principles calculations. Our findings challenge conventional magnetoelastic interpretations and reveal finite zero-point phonon angular momentum and strong anomalous thermal Hall responses linked to finite (spin) Berry curvatures. Our results further establish that the existence of chiral phonons, particularly along high-symmetry directions, is common in many magnetic materials, offering promising avenues for novel spintronic and phononic devices

    Understanding early childhood behavioral problems through parenting style-temperament typologies : a latent profile analysis

    Introduction This study examined the combined effects of parenting style and child temperament on early childhood behavioral problems using latent profile analysis.Methods A total of 5,138 valid questionnaires were collected from parents of children aged 3 to 6 years in Wuhan, China. Parenting styles, temperament traits, and behavioral problems were assessed using standardized instruments.Results Four distinct latent profiles were identified: Dysregulated Parenting-Rebellious Temperament, Unstable Parenting-Reserved Temperament, Supportive Parenting-Challenging Temperament, and Enriched Parenting-Compliant Temperament. Children in the Dysregulated Parenting-Rebellious Temperament group exhibited the highest rates of behavioral problems, whereas those in the Enriched Parenting-Compliant Temperament group showed the lowest. The results suggest that when children display more challenging temperamental traits, supportive parenting may be associated with lower behavioral problem prevalence. Conversely, children with more adaptable temperaments appear less susceptible to behavioral difficulties even in the context of less optimal parenting. Additionally, girls demonstrated significantly higher overall detection rates of behavioral problems than boys, and children with less-educated parents and lower household income exhibited greater behavioral problem prevalence.Discussion These findings underscore the importance of promoting positive parenting practices and accounting for individual temperament differences in early prevention efforts. Future research should employ longitudinal designs to validate and extend these findings

    Disentangling Milky Way halo populations at low metallicities using [Al/Fe]

    Context. Differentiating between in situ and accreted populations in the Milky Way halo is a challenging task. Various kinematic spaces are often used to identify distinct accreted populations from the in situ Milky Way halo. However, this approach has limitations, especially at low orbital energies. To overcome this ambiguity, elemental abundances are typically used to distinguish between populations. However, for many elemental abundance ratios (e.g. [Mg/Fe]), it remains difficult to make this distinction at low metallicities ([Fe/H]similar to-1.5). Aluminium abundances, on the other hand, are empirically effective discriminators and separate accreted from in situ populations in the Milky Way halo, even at low metallicities and low orbital energies. Aims. We aim to test the discriminating power of [Al/Fe] using a well-studied sample of high-velocity stars in the solar vicinity with high-quality spectra. With these stars, we explore the ability of [Al/Fe] to separate in situ from accreted stars and test its limitations. Methods. We derived aluminium abundances from the Al I 3944 and 3961 angstrom lines for 45 stars observed in two ESO programmes, along with 11 stars with archival spectra. Aluminium abundances were determined using 1D LTE and 1D NLTE spectral synthesis and line-profile fitting. Results. We confirm that the halo low-alpha population (associated with accreted stars) systematically exhibits lower [Al/Fe] compared to halo high-alpha (in situ) stars. However, at low [Fe/H] approximate to -1.4, we identify three stars, previously classified as in situ or thick-disc stars, as having low [Al/Fe] < -0.3, indicating that they might actually be accreted. Conclusions. Aluminium abundances, when carefully measured and with NLTE effects taken into account, are effective tracers of the chemical history of halo stars within the [Fe/H] limits analysed in the present work (-1.5 less than or similar to[Fe/H]less than or similar to -0.5). They provide an independent constraint on origin, complementing alpha-element abundance trends, and help disentangle subpopulations within the accreted halo, especially in the metal-poor regime

    Weak and Perron Solutions for Stationary Kramers-Fokker-Planck Equations in Bounded Domains

    n this paper, we investigate weak solutions and Perron-Wiener-Brelot solutions to the linear stationary Kramers-Fokker-Planck equation in bounded domains. We establish the existence of weak solutions in product domains by applying the Lions-Lax-Milgram theorem and the vanishing viscosity method. Furthermore, we show that these solutions coincide in well-behaved domains. Building on the existence of weak solutions in product domains, we develop the foundational theory of Perron-Wiener-Brelot solutions in arbitrary bounded domains. Our results rely on recent advancements in the theory of kinetic Fokker-Planck equations with rough coefficients

    Exploring the relationship between the level of facial nerve injury and surgical outcome : Application of a new anatomical classification system in a limited cohort undergoing marginal mandibular nerve reconstruction

    Background: Reconstruction of the marginal mandibular nerve (MMN) is important for achieving optimal outcomes in the treatment of facial paralysis. However, the heterogeneity of injuries, ranging from extensive proximal facial nerve injuries to isolated distal MMN injuries, complicates meaningful outcome comparisons. This study assessed a new anatomical classification system for stratifying facial nerve injuries by injury location. The aim was to study MMN outcomes in proximal versus distal injuries and determine whether this system could provide a more reliable way to compare surgical results. Methods: A retrospective, single-center study of MMN reconstructions (either independent MMN reconstructions or as part of a broader facial nerve reconstruction) was conducted over a 12-year period. Clinical outcomes were assessed using a classification system for facial nerve injuries (Levels 1-3, based on facial nerve injury location: Level 1 = proximal, Level 2 = parotid area, Level 3 = distal). Outcome measures included the Terzis' Lower Lip Grading Scale, photogrammetry, Sunnybrook, and quality-of-life assessments (Facial Disability Index, Facial Clinimetric Evaluation Scale). Results: Sixteen patients (7 female; mean age 46.5 ± 20.6 years) underwent MMN reconstruction. Across all outcome measures, distal Level 3 injuries yielded the best outcomes, followed by Level 2, with proximal Level 1 injuries showing the least favourable results. Conclusions: Proximal facial nerve injuries demonstrated inferior MMN outcomes compared with distal injuries, highlighting the importance of considering injury location when comparing results. The proposed classification system may provide a practical method for grouping patients according to anatomical injury location, enabling more meaningful and standardized comparisons of surgical outcomes among patients with similar characteristics and treatment protocols
