3D holographic fan advertising and its influence on consumer attitudes and purchase intentions
A research report submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Business Administration, in the Faculty of Commerce Law and Management, Wits Business School, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2025The rise of holographic display technology in marketing communications has the potential to enhance consumer engagement by enabling realistic and interactive 3D experiences. However, limited research exists on consumer perceptions of 3D holographic fan advertising, particularly from a Global South perspective. This study examined how consumer attitudes and purchase intentions are influenced by 3D holographic fan advertising, using the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) theory and the Advertising Value Model as theoretical foundations. A quantitative approach was used, with data collected through a self-administered questionnaire using a mall-intercept method at points of experience in South African restaurants. A non-probability convenience sampling technique was used, yielding a sample size of 390 respondents. The findings indicate that South African consumers have a positive reception towards 3D holographic fan advertising. Informativeness, entertainment, irritation, and credibility were identified as key predictors of consumer attitudes, with entertainment being the most valued factor. The results further revealed that informativeness and credibility are strong predictors of purchase intentions, while positive consumer attitudes towards the 3D holographic fan advertisements significantly influence purchase intentions. This study contributes to marketing communication literature by bridging the gap between technological advancements and consumer preferences. It provides empirical insights to assist marketing professionals in integrating 3D holographic fan advertising into their strategic campaigns. Additionally, the study offers a Global South perspective, enriching the understanding of emerging consumer trends in digital advertising.MM202

Distilling the core tactics of impression management in an extra-financial reporting context
A research report submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Commerce , in the Faculty of Commerce Law and Management, School of Accountancy, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2025This paper investigates the core impression management tactics organisations employ in extra-financial reporting. As scrutiny of extra-financial disclosure intensifies, stakeholders are increasingly demanding enhanced transparency and accountability. Organisations, in response may strategically present non-financial information to shape stakeholder perceptions, resulting in a gap between stakeholders' expectations and the content presented in extra-financial reports. The study uses content and bibliometric analyses to identify the primary impression management tactics per prior academic literature. These tactics are then applied to the extra-financial reports of a listed organisation which was implicated in an ESG concern to illustrate the application of the tactics. The tactics include (1) perception management, (2) self-promotion, (3) reputation enhancement, (4) building stakeholder rapport, (5) intimidation, (6) exaggerating qualitative disclosures, (7) distorting graphical disclosures, (8) selective disclosures, (9) obfuscation techniques, (10) social media strategies, (11) deflecting criticism, (12) re-using information, (13) tick-box compliance, (14) superficial board compositions, and (15) image-driven philanthropy. This paper extends the existing literature on impression management by offering detailed examples of how these tactics are employed in organisational contexts. The research provides a framework for practitioners and academics to identify and evaluate impression management tactics within extra-financial reporting disclosures. The study contributes to developing robust regulatory frameworks and reporting standards, guiding assurance providers toward more rigorous assurance procedures. It offers policymakers valuable insights for formulating policies which deter deceptive reporting practices. These contributions are crucial for promoting greater transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct in organisational reporting.MM202
