    A research report submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Management in the field of Digital Business, in the Faculty of Commerce Law and Management, Wits Business School, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2025Small, micro, and medium enterprises (SMMEs) in South Africa’s mining sector face significant funding constraints due to remote operational locations, high capital demands, and fluctuating revenue flows. Guided by the Technology- Organisation-Environment (TOE) framework, this qualitative study investigated how financial technology (fintech) solutions could alleviate these financing challenges. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with SMME owners, fintech providers, and industry consultants. The findings reveal that fintech platforms offer rapid loan approvals, flexible repayment terms, and reduced procedural burdens benefits particularly crucial for capital-intensive mining operations. However, adoption is hampered by limited internet connectivity, digital-literacy gaps, mistrust of new platforms, and regulatory complexities. Recommendations include improving infrastructure in remote areas, instituting targeted training and capacity-building programs, and clarifying fintech regulations to mitigate compliance risks. The study concludes that, while fintech holds substantial promise for enhancing financial access and operational efficiency in the mining sector, its full potential depends on concerted efforts by policymakers, service providers, and industry stakeholders to address contextual barriers and build a supportive ecosystem for digital finance.MM202

    Factors that influence the adoption of cloud computing by SMMEs in Gauteng townships in South Africa

    A research report submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Business Administration, in the Faculty of Commerce Law and Management, Wits Business School, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2025Background: Recently, there has been a growing emphasis on supporting small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) operating in township economies. To provide effective support, it is crucial to understand the contextual factors that influence technological advancements and business performance. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the extent to which contextual factors influence the adoption of cloud computing technology in SMMEs located in the townships of Gauteng Province, South Africa. Setting: The study focussed on SMMEs in Gauteng Province’s townships. Methods: The study employed a quantitative research methodology, collecting data from 56 respondents through online and paper-based questionnaires. The hypothesis testing was conducted using multilinear regression analysis. Results: The study revealed that contextual factors have a negligible influence on the adoption of cloud computing by SMMEs in Gauteng townships. Contrary to the initial hypotheses, IT infrastructure, government initiatives, and political stability did not significantly affect cloud adoption. However, electricity supply was found to have a significant negative impact. Conclusion: The study found that contextual factors exert minimal influence on cloud computing adoption. These findings call for a re-evaluation of current support strategies and underscore the need for further research to uncover the nuanced factors affecting cloud computing adoption in similar contexts. Contribution: This study contributes to the broader conceptual frameworks of technology adoption by SMMEs, and can be utilised by various practitioners, including academia, policymakers, SMME owners and managers, and strategic management researchers, to improve growth and sustainability.MM202

    An analysis of statutory general debarment in the South African finance markets

    A research report submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Commerce, in the Faculty of Commerce Law and Management, School of Business Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, 2025This dissertation critically examines the debarment process outlined in the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act within the context of South Africa's constitutional framework. The proliferation of debarment cases has raised concerns about the alignment of these actions with constitutional protections of the right to work. The dissertation establishes two primary objectives: first, to delineate the limited circumstances under which debarment can legitimately occur while safeguarding fundamental rights, and second, to assess the extent to which the FAIS Act's debarment procedures adhere to this framework. Through an analysis of legal principles, constitutional rights, legislative provisions, case law, and empirical data, the dissertation identifies the absence of clear guidelines and procedural safeguards governing the debarment process. It highlights inconsistencies in application and the potential for unjustified limitations on individuals' right to work. The dissertation concludes by advocating for the development of a systematic framework that upholds constitutional principles, ensures procedural fairness, and promotes regulatory integrity in debarment decisions within the financial services industry.MM202
