    Understanding the Effects of High-Power Electromagnetic Waves on Electronic Devices and Systems

    We developed a low-cost, radiated method for observing HPM effects in CMOS electronics using a GTEM cell. The methodology was validated through demonstration of Logic Hold, a well characterised HPM vulnerability that disrupts logic behaviour during exposure. We designed a novel RF coupling structure to deliver HPM energy to the DUT, with strong agreement observed between theoretical predictions, full-wave simulation, and experimental measurements. This accessible approach supports wider adoption of radiated immunity testing

    Factors Contributing to Non-Adherence to Treatment Among Adult Patients with Long-Term Haemodialysis: An Integrative Review.

    Background: Adherence of renal patients to a prescribed therapeutic regimen is crucial for the success of haemodialysis and the decreased mortality rates of patients; however, 60% are non-adherent to dialysis, fluid, and dietary allowances. To identify promising interventions aimed at improving treatment adherence, this review aimed to collate research evidence on the prevalence of non-adherence to treatment (fluid, diet, and routine haemodialysis) and to synthesise the factors contributing to non-adherence in long-term haemodialysis patients. Methods: An integrative review was conducted using Whittemore and Knafl’s five-stage framework (2005). ProQuest, CINAHL, PubMed, and Web of Science were searched, using the keywords ‘haemodialysis’ and ‘non-adherence’. The review included peer-reviewed quantitative studies published in English from 1 August 2018 to 30 June 2025, focusing on adults over 18 undergoing haemodialysis. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal Checklist was used to assess the quality of the studies. Results: Twenty-nine studies were included, identifying factors across four treatment groups: non-adherence to fluid allowance, dietary allowance, haemodialysis session, and fluid/diet/haemodialysis. These factors were grouped into three themes: social demographics, clinical factors, self-management, and perceptions. Commonly cited factors included age, gender, educational status, health literacy, and perception. Conclusions: This review highlights the complex factors influencing treatment non-adherence, which may vary based on the variables and measurement tools used in each study. Low-level health literacy is the most frequently cited modifiable factor. Therefore, prioritising effective patient education that enhances knowledge and understanding of the importance of adhering to treatment is key to improving compliance in long-term haemodialysis patients

    Learning from neuroscience: integrating users in design processes using brain imaging tools and virtual reality

    Historically, the close-knit relationship between design and construction ensured that built architecture harmonised with its local context and users, as it originated from the shared experiences of a community. However, with the establishment of architecture as a discipline taught at universities, users and their needs have been deemphasised in the design process. Addressing the challenges of user-centred design, this paper reports on insights from a five-year research project focused on integrating user experiences during the design process. Specifically, as a review of existing research revealed novel opportunities for empirical research on users’ experiences in designed environments via brain imaging tools, electroencephalography (EEG) in particular, and virtual reality (VR), our research conducted in several phases tested the integration of these technologies. Our research fills a gap, as despite growing interest in employing EEG and VR in architectural research, a comprehensive strategy for their integration into the design process has not been formulated. An initial review of existing design process models, which do not integrate real-time user experience, nevertheless assisted us in identifying potential stages for such integration. Building upon insights from research experiments, we propose a new design process model that builds the foundation for a comprehensive user-centred neuro-architectural design methodology

    Dynamic on-bench loading location optimisation of explosive trucks for short-term mine planning

    The mining industry is progressing steadily toward operation optimisation, with drill-and-blast operations presenting significant challenges in this transition. Many mining processes still require optimisation especially for mine sites with a substantial geographic spread. One such process, which consumes substantial time and resources, involves traveling distance for charging blastholes using Mobile Processing Units (MPUs) and re-loading MPUs at facilities which may not be in proximity to the charging location. This study introduces an innovative programming tool designed to optimise the number of MPUs and their routes within a pit, taking into account factors such as explosive types and MPU capacities based on the provided mine plan inputs. Additionally, the tool employs a Genetic Algorithm (GA) and satellite road networking mapping to determine the optimal on-bench loading locations for multiple pits, minimising travel distances between MPUs, pits, on-bench loading areas, and magazines. The tool was tested over four consecutive six month periods of the mine plan for Fortescue, demonstrating significant reductions in travel distances, thus providing the potential to minimise operational costs

    Who is at risk of a respiratory syncytial virus hospitalisation? A linked, population-based birth cohort analysis in children aged less than 5 years

    Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a major cause of acute lower respiratory infections globally in children under five years. With the development of RSV prevention strategies, understanding risk factors and relation to age and population is useful for deciding the type of program implemented. Methods: We used a probabilistically-linked population cohort of children born in Western Australia from 2010 to 2020 and hospitalised before age five years from 2010 to 2021. The primary outcome was the first laboratory-confirmed RSV-hospitalisation. Risk factor exposures included perinatal, socio-demographic, household, environmental, congenital, and comorbid conditions antecedent to RSV-hospitalisation. Adjusted hazard ratios (aHR) and population attributable fractions (PAF) were calculated using survival analysis techniques and Cox regression. Findings: Risk factors for RSV-hospitalisation in 365,582 children included demographic (male sex, Aboriginal ethnicity), perinatal (younger maternal age, maternal asthma, prematurity, maternal prenatal smoking) household/environmental (household size, season of birth), and comorbid and congenital conditions (cardiovascular defects, Trisomy 21 and cerebral palsy). Aboriginal and preterm children had an excess risk of hospitalisation at every age group. Larger households and being born moderate-late preterm had the highest PAFs (36.90% [95% CI: 35.01%, 38.74%] and 7.40% [95% CI: 6.75%, 8.04%]). While the risk of hospitalisation for children with some comorbid and congenital conditions was high (immunological conditions, aHR: 3.94 [95% CI: 2.98, 5.23], respiratory system defects, aHR: 3.13 [95% CI: 1.87, 5.25]), the PAFs were relatively small (1.70% [95% CI: 1.53%, 1.86%] and 0.40% [95% CI: 0.30%, 0.49%]). Interpretation: While children with comorbid conditions were at higher risk of RSV-hospitalisation, the importance of socio-demographic risk factors, particularly modifiable factors such as maternal prenatal smoking and household transmission, should not be undervalued. Our analysis provides information for funders, vaccine policy makers, parents/carers, and immunisation providers.     Investigating the Impacts of Mobility Experiences on the Sustainability Mindsets of Tertiary Students

    This thesis explores how structured mobility experiences influence tertiary students’ Sustainability Mindsets by integrating Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL). Using a mixed-methods approach, the research examined cognitive, emotional, and behavioural shifts in students’ sustainability knowledge, attitudes, and behaviours. Findings show that mobility programs grounded in SEL and PBL promote sustainability awareness, cross-cultural empathy, and commitment to sustainable practices, supporting transformative education for global citizenship
