Elucidating the Mechanism of Necrotrophic Effector Regulation in a Fungal Pathogen of Wheat

This thesis explores the transcriptional regulation of virulence factors, such as necrotrophic effectors, in Parastagonospora nodorum, a fungal pathogen of wheat. The findings in this thesis have shed light on three distinct regulatory components of P. nodorum virulence, the necrotrophic lifestyle regulator PnPf2, the developmental regulator PnVeA, and a newly identified component that suppresses effector gene expression, possibly involving nitrogen metabolism

Learning Journeys of Noongar University Students: Moving Forward by Looking Back (Ka Mua, Ka Muri)

This PhD exegesis shares the learning journeys of Noongar and Maori university students as they progress through western academic spaces while staying grounded in culture, community, and identity. Through a web series and written reflections, the study centres Indigenous ways of knowing and being. It highlights how culturally grounded support fosters belonging and success, urging universities to move beyond tokenism toward genuine inclusion that honours and empowers Indigenous students on their own terms

Work System Adaptation during Organisational Change: A Study of System Change in Two Healthcare Settings

This thesis examines how healthcare work systems adapt during organizational change, focusing on the implementation of a Remote Monitoring System and the Undiagnosed Diseases Program. It explores how participants make sense of and adjust to AI-based technologies post-implementation, supporting a dynamic view of organizational change. The research highlights the importance of active employee involvement in technology implementation and work system redesign, stressing the critical role of adaptation in the post-implementation stage

Exploring the impact of digitisation in a Science Discovery Centre on children’s creativity and STEM engagement

    No full text
This thesis investigates how interactive digital exhibits in Science Discovery Centres (SDCs) can foster 21st century skills like creative agency in young children. Using a qualitative case study of a Perth-based SDC, the study examined exhibit design through literature review, exhibit mapping, video observation, and interviews. Findings revealed only a co-designed exhibit, Move It!, effectively stimulated creative agency. The research recommends reframing exhibit design to develop purposeful digital experiences that support children's skill development in GLAM institutions

Fiscal Equalisation in Australian Federalism: share and share alike?

The sharing of revenue between the states to achieve fiscal equality has long been an important and internationally notable feature of Australian federalism. While horizontal fiscal equalisation is always prone to dispute, unprecedented conflict erupted in the Australian system in the second decade of this century and resulted in changes that brought the long-standing principles of the system into question. Central to both the origins and the crisis of the equalisation system was the State of Western Australia, a long-time beneficiary transformed into a much-aggrieved donor. This article outlines the history and nature of the system before analysing the causes, character, and consequences of the 2018 changes

Natural Sulfur Compounds in Mineral Waters: Implications for Human Health and Disease

Natural sulfur compounds found in various mineral spring waters have attracted considerable interest due to their possible health benefits and healing qualities. Key substances such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), sulfate (SO42−), and thiosulfate (S2O32−) are essential to numerous physiological functions. This overview delves into the biochemical pathways through which these sulfur compounds exert their influence, emphasizing their roles as antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, and detoxifying agents. Furthermore, it investigates the therapeutic promise of mineral waters rich in sulfur for various diseases like arthritis, skin ailments, and heart diseases. Emerging studies indicate that regular use or topical application of these waters could enhance health outcomes and aid in the prevention of a multitude of diseases. Nonetheless, additional research is required to clarify sulfur water’s mechanisms of action and to develop standardized protocols for their therapeutic applications. This descriptive review highlights the significance of integrating natural sulfur compounds into comprehensive health strategies and advocates for ongoing investigation into their advantages in medical contexts

The identification of good practices and intervention modalities for occupational therapists working with refugee children aged 6-12 years in high-income countries to promote their psychosocial wellbeing

    No full text
This doctoral thesis examines how occupational therapy can support the psychosocial wellbeing of refugee children aged 6–12 resettled in high-income countries. Using a mixed-methods design: a systematic review, focus groups, and a Delphi study. The research identified effective practices and intervention modalities. Findings emphasise client-centred, trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, community-based, and multimodal approaches, alongside systemic advocacy and capacity building. Key modalities include play, creative therapies, emotional regulation strategies, and counselling. Recommendations address practice, education, research, and policy

Exploring the Galaxy with the MWA: identification and characterisation of supernova remnants and pulsars

This thesis produced the most comprehensive radio colour image of the southern Galactic Plane using the Murchison Widefield Array, based in the WA outback. This image has enabled the study of the structures in our Galaxy in unprecedented detail, including the identification and characterisation of supernova remnants and pulsars, which helped to reduce theoretical and observational discrepancies
