E-Invoicing for GST Reporting in Australia: Towards Mandatory Implementation
This article examines the potential implementation of electronic invoicing
(e-invoicing) in Australia’s goods and services tax (GST) administration, motivated
by a 2024 case in which the Australian Federal Police seized over AUD 500,000
from a Sydney-based entity for issuing false invoices. The fraudulent scheme
exploited the input tax credit mechanism by enabling businesses to claim GST
credits on invoices that did not correspond to actual tax remittances, thereby
undermining the integrity of GST collection. Against this backdrop, the analysis
situates the discussion within the broader evolution of digital tax administration,
exemplified by the OECD’s Tax Administration 3.0 framework, which advocates
for the integration of digital processes to enhance efficiency, compliance and
real-time data sharing between taxpayers and tax authorities. The article further
contextualises international developments in mandatory e-invoicing, notably within
Europe, and considers Australia’s adoption of the Pan European Public Procurement
On-Line framework as a precursor to broader e-invoicing initiatives. By critically
assessing the regulatory, technical and operational challenges, including issues of
interoperability and data verification, the study argues that e-invoicing could serve
as a practical tool to mitigate invoicing fraud and enhance GST administration
Green Impact: Board Decisions and Market Reactions to Green Bond Issuances
The thesis examines the causes and consequence of firms issuing green bonds. Board structure, diversity, and network increase the likelihood of a firm issuing a green bond before COVID-19. Investor sentiment positively (negatively) influences stock market reactions before (after) the pandemic. Finally, retail investors demand liquidity immediately after announcements that green bonds will be issued, with institutional investors supplying it. After bonds are issued, institutional investors demand liquidity, while retail investors provide it
Adolescents and young adults’ preferences for sexual and reproductive health services in Ethiopia: Evidence from three discrete choice experiments
Introduction
Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) in Ethiopia face significant sexual and reproductive health (SRH) challenges, yet service utilisation remains low, partly because current services could better align with their preferences. This study assessed AYAs' preferences for SRH services.
Methods
We conducted three distinct but interrelated discrete choice experiments (DCEs) on contraceptive services, abortion care, and sexually transmitted infection (STI) services between February and April 2024 in Ethiopia. A D-efficient design with two blocks of 24 choice tasks was used. A mixed logit model was used to estimate attribute importance, willingness to pay (WTP), choice probabilities, and preference heterogeneity. Analyses were weighted to improve representativeness and comparability.
Results
A total of 984, 990, and 990 participants completed the contraceptive, abortion care, and STI DCEs, respectively. The majority of respondents were from urban areas. Privacy was the most important attribute for contraceptive and abortion care, while quality of care dominated in STI services. Privacy and quality of service were three times more valued than the attitude of the healthcare providers. Respondents from rural and regional areas prioritised privacy, whereas urban and metropolitan participants valued high-quality care. Under optimal conditions, predicted service uptake reached 95 %, compared to 10 % under unfavourable scenarios. The highest WTP (2923 Ethiopian birr/54 USD) was observed to avoid poor-quality STI services.
Conclusion
Privacy and service quality emerged as the most important attributes influencing the uptake of SRH services among AYAs. However, there is preference heterogeneity among sociodemographic groups, underscoring the need for context-specific interventions
Toward Sustainable Mining: Exploring Alternative Mineral Resources and Innovative Extraction Techniques
The relentless pace of industrialisation and globalisation has precipitated the rapid depletion of surface mineral deposits, presenting a formidable challenge to conventional mining operations and exerting a detrimental impact on their profitability. This depletion, coupled with the escalating demand for minerals, has driven prices to unprecedented highs, thereby inflating operating costs across various industries. Traditional surface and underground mining methods, struggling to meet burgeoning demands, contribute significantly to environmental degradation and substantial energy consumption. In response to these challenges, this study advocates for a paradigm shift from conventional mining methods and mineral resources toward untapped alternatives that hold the potential for enhanced economic viability and sustainability. Utilising environmentally friendly techniques and adopting more economical approaches becomes paramount in addressing the pressing demands of the current era and securing resources for future generations. This short review examines potential alternative mineral resources and the associated mining methods, including fluidised mining, deep-sea mining, brine mining, urban mining, in-situ and heap leaching, and space mining. A meticulous evaluation of the state-of-the-art technologies developed for these unconventional methods is conducted, including an assessment of their respective advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the study deliberates on the prospects of each approach, elucidating their potential contributions to alleviating the global metal crisis. This research provides insights that can inform sustainable mining practices and guide the industry toward a more environmentally responsible and economically viable future. The urgency of such a transition is underscored by the need to address the challenges posed by conventional mining and ensure the availability of mineral resources for generations to come
"Home? I don't think I know what that is anymore": An Exploration of the Construction of Trauma in Contemporary, Australian Young Adult Fantasy Fiction
A common argument made in trauma studies states that trauma cannot be articulated and therefore cannot be represented. Cathy Caruth draws connections between trauma and literary representation by asserting that trauma fractures both language and consciousness, and the language used to describe trauma is symbolic because it, “defies, even as it claims, our understanding” (Caruth, 1996, 5). However, trauma narratives exist, so how do fictional works make use of creative, symbolic language to convey trauma
Electroanalysis of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances Using Ion Transfer at Liquid-liquid Interfaces
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are synthetic materials that bioaccumulate and are connected with a variety of adverse human health issues. This thesis examines the basis for understanding of electrochemical behaviour and detection of various ionised PFAS using ion-transfer voltammetry. These results also provide insight into the interactions of ionised PFAS with proteins and carbohydrates
Investigating Terpyridine Functionalised Calixarenes
Incorporating both terpyridines and calixarenes into a single molecule allows for their versatile properties to be combines, presenting an interesting area of research with many potential applications. This body of work aims to investigate calixarenes substituted with terpyridine functionalities before studying their chelating capability with various metals
Aligning Curriculum With Workplace: A Frameowrk For AI-Ready Graduate
The rapid evolution of the professional landscape creates a critical misalignment between educational outcomes and the humancentric
competencies demanded by the modern economy. Current AI grading tools are underutilised and rarely considered for
future-proof talent development. This study employs a qualitative study design by analysing existing scholarly work on AI in
education, competency-based learning, and the future of work. Through a thematic analysis of the literature, the study will
develop a theoretical framework using an AI grading tool, Cograder's aggregated student performance data to map competency
patterns. The literature review will outline the evolution of assessment methods, current market gaps and the feasibility of AI
analytics. The result is a framework that allows educators to evaluate assessment data and form a sustainable feedback loop
between curriculum design and student competence for the workplace. Overall, understanding the role of AI is imperative in the
continuous improvement and advancement of education for the future workforce and youth.Limitations include current artificial
intelligence systems lacking the necessary programming to predict and create detailed analytics. Another limitation is the everchanging
market demands in the workforce, which makes consistent talent development difficult to sustain. A suggestion for
future research would be further longitudinal studies into AI intelligence and refining concepts such as Participatory Action
Research (PAR) for strategic interventions.
