Novel Nanoencapsulation Technology and its Potential Role in Targeted Gene Therapy
Nucleic acid therapeutics provide innovative treatment options for diverse conditions. In contrast to traditional treatments, many nucleic acid therapies can treat the underlying cause of disease. However, effective delivery is hindered by degradation and poor targeting. This thesis investigates advanced strategies to optimise the delivery of nucleic acid therapies, focusing on enhancing stability and specificity for neurosensory conditions like hearing loss and vision impairment, aiming to improve therapeutic outcomes and broaden clinical applications
Assessment of Glucose-lowering Constituents in Teucrium Polium; Investigating Compounds of Reported Insulin Secretagogue Potential
This thesis quantifies flavonoids in Teucrium polium (Tp) and examines their insulin secretagogue potential. Despite the low levels of apigenin and quercetin in Tp, the insulin secretagogue effect likely results from a cumulative and possibly synergistic action of the flavonoid group as a whole. Human metabolites of these compounds exhibit continued activity, suggesting a collective effect with minimal likelihood of hepatotoxicity. Future work should aim at quantitating and validating these findings in vivo
Optimization of Grinding Circuits by Reducing Undersized Particles Through Optimal Ball Size Selection in a Ball Mill
This study investigates how ball size affects grinding performance in a lab-scale ball mill using gold ore. By modelling various feed sizes and ball diameters, it identifies optimal sizes that balance grinding efficiency and overgrinding. The findings offer a practical framework for selecting ball sizes, reducing undersized particles, enhancing mineral liberation, and improving downstream processing. The results support further research into multi-size ball charges and broader milling conditions
Health and Incarceration in Australia: A Scoping Review and Meta-Analysis
This thesis synthesises Australian justice health research and provides national estimates of mental health disorders among people who experience incarceration in Australian prisons and youth detention. A scoping review of 508 studies highlights both the progress made and critical gaps that persist. Meta-analyses reveal the disproportionate burden of mental illness among justice-involved populations. Further high-quality research is needed to reduce health inequities and improve outcomes for all people who experience incarceration in Australia
Characterisation of the Prevalence of Radio Frequency Emission from Satellites at SKA-Low Frequencies with SKA-Low Prototype Stations
This thesis characterises radio emission from satellites at SKA-Low frequencies using SKA-Low prototype stations. It finds satellites transmitting at frequencies protected for radio astronomy, as well as other unexpected frequencies. The satellite detections are publicly released to aid in future regulatory efforts

Microbial Life of Acidic Hypersaline Lakes: Extreme Life in Extreme Environments
This thesis has contributed to the understanding of Acidihalobacter’s evolution from halophile to haloacidophile and identified the acid tolerance mechanisms they possess. The amplicon, metagenome and metatranscriptome sequencing of eight acidic saline lakes across the Yilgarn Craton has expanded the understanding of; the microbial diversity these extreme environments harbor; what key environmental parameters influenced these microbial communities; the potential metabolic processes in the lake water; and the potential biotechnological applications of microbes in the lake
Flowsheet development for an alternative leach system for Mt Weld rare earth ore types
Dr Henderson has studied processing of rare earth minerals to recover these elements that have become indispensable in this modern world. A novel approach is used providing a safer and less environmentally challenging option to conventional treatment. Oxalic acid liberates these critical elements from phosphate minerals at temperatures around 45 oC. While the rare earth oxalates are not soluble, these can be released in EDTA for subsequent purification steps and recovery of mixed oxide product

Blockchain-based Renewable Energy Trading and Storage Optimisation
The rapid global transition toward renewable energy has accelerated the adoption of distributed energy resources, particularly rooftop solar photovoltaic systems. While the increasing penetration of solar PV brings significant environmental and economic benefits, it also introduces challenges related to grid stability, demand uncertainty, and intermittent generation. These challenges necessitate advanced forecasting, optimisation, and storage solutions to ensure efficient system operation. This dissertation develops a comprehensive framework for enhancing distributed solar PV systems under uncertainty, with a focus on cost-effective energy storage and peer-to-peer (P2P) trading mechanisms. The research pursues four main objectives: (i) designing a machine learning-based predictive model for forecasting solar generation and net load; (ii) developing an optimisation model for battery energy storage system (BESS) sizing and control; (iii) formulating an optimisation model for electricity option pricing; and (iv) establishing optimisation models for P2P energy trading. The proposed framework integrates smart grid concepts with blockchain-enabled trading management, incorporating smart contracts to govern energy exchange, data registration, and financial settlement. By combining predictive modelling, optimisation, and decentralised market mechanisms, this work aims to improve operational flexibility, reduce storage costs, and enable seamless and equitable energy exchange between end-users, the P2P marketplace, and utility companies
