The public discourse of the university: A contrastive sociopragmatic discourse analysis among Cameroon, France and Spain
The informalization and conversationalization of public discourse in the latter part of the twentieth century is a complex phenomenon that has been well documented in English speaking societies. This article parts from Fairclough’s (1995) premises to analyse how this phenomenon is taking place in Romance languages with a similar technological development in comparison to the discourse practices of a country where the penetration of the Internet in the everyday life of its inhabitants is merely symbolic. The study thus compares the level of informalization of the public discourse in Cameroon, France and Spain by studying the welcoming letters of the principals of universities to their students published on the official websites of these higher institutions. We see the formality and informality of greetings, sign-offs and signatures of letters as well as the use of the second person pronoun as clear parameters that can confirm the tendency towards informalization in present public discourse. The results have shown that the discourse practices of these European university authorities are similar in their degree of informality, although there seems to be a stronger preference for informal styles in Spain. The results also confirm that the low penetration of the Internet must have a decisive influence on the fact that the discourse practices in Cameroonian universities follow a very traditional style with very formal salutations and farewells and a very formal use of signatures and pronouns, since most welcoming letters have not been written for the web, unlike the letters published on the French and Spanish websites. We understand the limitations of the study, which are clearly provoked by the poor access of Cameroonians to the Internet and have restricted our study to the official webpages of universities. However, we hope that this novel analysis of Cameroonian Computer-mediated Communication discourse (CMC) can serve as a point of departure for similar studies on CMC in technologically under-developed societies, but, above all, we wish this piece of research to enrich the field of linguistic studies in Romance languages
Generalized deception, pragmatics and argumentation
This work seeks to contribute to the conceptual clarification of the group of linguistic and psychological behaviours of self-deception, deception, lies and manipulation, which are grouped here under the umbrella of generalized deception. These distinctions will allow us to analyze pragmatically and argumentatively the agent’s attempts to justify and convince an audience by using those behaviours. In order to achieve the conceptual distinctions and the analysis of the cases, approaches from cognition, evolutionary theory, pragmatics and argumentation theory are discussed. Specifically, these theoretical and analytical tools are applied to two cases in which the social influence bias mobilizes an argumentative behaviour where one or several members of the generalized deception family are observed in use. The results show that within such a context, the agent gives justifications that are self-deceptive and deceptive, and tries to convince with irrelevant and insufficient arguments that configure a manipulative scenario
Practices with human cadaver dissection have a long tradition and are a basic part of the teaching of human anatomy. However they can be a stressful experience for the student, which may pose a high level of anxiety. The aim of this study was to determine the attitudes, reactions and fears of students in first degree course of Speech and Language against the dissecting room. This is a cross-sectional study conducted before-and-after the first students from year Logopedia of Castilla-La Mancha University (Spain) who had never participated in a practice of dissection. Prior and after practice an anonymous questionnaire was administered to understand the feelings and emotions. They have 47 students (97.9%) participated from 48 students, with a mean age is 20 ± 2.22 years. A 76.6% say they feel at the practice "Curiosity". Students have the highest percentage of unpleasant feeling "Odor" room (46.8%). Overall, students feel before starting "Quiet" and "Insurance" in 74.5% and 70.2%. There are 26 students (63.4%) who have expressed have had thoughts about life and death. 100% of students is recommended practice for upcoming courses with an average score of 9.1 points. The anatomy is usually an attractive subject for students and practices in the dissecting room generally involve a series of uncomfortable and stressful experiences. They have obtained similar to published results by others authors national and international. Passing a dissecting room can challenge the emotional balance of some students. Students consider this practice very useful.
Speech and language intervention in bilinguals
Increasingly, speech and language pathologists (SLPs) around the world are faced with the unique set of issues presented by their bilingual clients. Some professional associations in different countries have presented recommendations when assessing and treating bilingual populations. In children, most of the studies have focused on intervention for language and phonology/ articulation impairments and very few focus on stuttering. In general, studies of language intervention tend to agree that intervention in the first language (L1) either increase performance on L2 or does not hinder it. In bilingual adults, monolingual versus bilingual intervention is especially relevant in cases of aphasia; dysarthria in bilinguals has been barely approached. Most studies of cross-linguistic effects in bilingual aphasics have focused on lexical retrieval training. It has been noted that even though a majority of studies have disclosed a cross-linguistic generalization from one language to the other, some methodological weaknesses are evident. It is concluded that even though speech and language intervention in bilinguals represents a most important clinical area in speech language pathology, much more research using larger samples and controlling for potentially confounding variables is evidently required.
Morphosyntax seems to be the weakest aspect of language in individuals with Down Syndrome, and is without doubt one of the aspects that needs most constant, systematic attention during speech and language therapy. Given the divergence between theories and hypotheses that set a chronological “ceiling” for language development and those that assume an evolution of language until adulthood, we believe it is important to conduct research on whether there are significant differences in the learning of morphosyntax depending on age. To this end, a morphosyntactic training program was carried out on 20 people with Down Syndrome, establishing two age bands: from 6 to 11 years and from 12 to 14 years of age. The results obtained show significant improvements in morphology and syntax in both age groups when they receive the morphosyntactic training program. These results support the idea that language may continue to develop beyond infancy and adolescence.
In Tuscany (Italy), oak mixed woods with high cover values of Quercus petraea are rather infrequent but well documented within local and national phytosociological studies, even if, in the literature, not always analyzed and well characterized from the syntaxonomic view point. We gathered 71 published and unpublished Tuscan phytosociological relevés where Q. petraea was dominant or with relevant cover values, that were investigated by means of multivariate analysis. The ecological requirements of the resulting groups were indirectly calculated by means of Ellenberg Indicator Values (EIV), and the fidelity coefficient (PHI) for the diagnostic species of each group was calculated. According to our analysis, five different types of Q. petraea woods were found to be present in Tuscany. Each group was characterized floristically and ecologically, allowing to investigate their syntaxonomic aspects. Thus we have attributed the Tuscan Q. petraea communities to five different associations, two of which already existing and three are here described as new associations. In the end, some conservation aspects of these woods regarding Natura 2000 habitats are discussed.
A cognitive analysis of the obligation modal periphrasis: the equivalence between «deber + infinitivo» and «tener que + infinitivo»
With this study, we will try to build a new metalinguistic image for these constructions that reaches beyond the ambiguous and often even contradictory characterizations made for them from the traditional linguistic approaches, by offering a schematic definition of the prototypical semantic value of each of this periphrasis. The result of this analysis will allow us to propose that the confusion around these constructions emerges from the fact that both of them depict the same conceptual profile, projected to two different conceptual backgrounds. The resultant metalinguistic image, solving this issue, offers the possibility of making a relevant contribution both in the theoretical field –by complementing the traditional descriptions– and as an application to teaching Spanish as a foreign language
This article examines the connection between expressions of Uruguayan and Spanish popular music, focusing on those corresponding to so-called “resistance identities”. Mediatized popular and traditional repertories are analysed, demonstrating elements of a Spanish origin used for this purpose, especially during the civic-military dictatorship in Uruguay that lasted from 1972 to 1985. The present study looks at aspects of the canto payadoresco, historically linked to “cantar opinando” (literally, singing while expressing one’s opinion), the lyric genres resulting from local re-workings of Spanish elements (cielito, milonga…) and expressions from popular theatre groups at Uruguayan Carnival (murgas). In regard to the latter, particularly symbolic cases of contrafacta are cited. Mechanisms of reaction with respect to censorship and the methods used to circumvent it, including re-semantization, the use of poetic metaphors and musical quotation, are analysed in these repertories
The weight of the influence of governments on quality press information
One-fourth of the information provided by the press –more precisely by the closest general information sections- has its original source in facts which can be linked in a directly or indirect way to a particular government. This is the result of such an investigation on the weight of the information from Central, Regional and Local governments in the press of reference. According to a quantitative methodology, the content analysis offers an evaluation of 29,342 information units in the national newspapers El País and El Mundo, and local newspapers Sur and Málaga Hoy, along 2010. The national press is less permeable to the publication of these contents, compared to the local newspapers. Taking influences as a value of reference, 42% of the news must do with central government, 30% has to do with regional governments and 28% comes from local and provincial corporations
Education is one of the most important elements for the development in societies. In Mexico and Central America, where the vast majority of non-authorized immigrants in the United States come from, equal opportunities in access —and permanence— to the education system remains a pending issue. For this reason, educational achievements, as well as material improvement, are very important aspects in the “American Dream” for the population that wants to reach that country, and particularly for the migrant women in our studyIn the next article, we present the results of a qualitative investigation carried out in the northern border of Mexico with the USA. In which we analyzed the educational expectations from the women in their migration project, and how education plays as an important variable in the preparation for their trip and also in the minimization of risks during their trip. Thru in-depth interviews, we make a qualitative analysis on the motivations that lead these women to start their journey and the resources they have for tackling the risks, where education plays a role in both cases. In the findings, we can say that the formal education received in their place of origin, conditions the migration project of non-documented migrant women traveling to the US: their scope, their travel strategy, as well as their responses to danger. And in the same manner, the educational achievement, for themselves or their dependents, as part of their migration project. In this scenario, the notion of return does not allow them, in some cases, to fulfill their expectations of the “American Dream”.La educación es uno de los elementos más importantes para el desarrollo de la sociedad.
