    Reorienting food safety inspections: A new model for regulatory practice

    Abstract: Purpose – Food safety inspection is a key health protection measure applied by Environmental Health Practitioners (EHPs) to reduce the risk of foodborne illness and protect public health. Three areas of limitation have been identified with current food safety inspection approaches, including comprehensiveness, coherence and bias. This paper presents a model – hereafter called the Barnes model – for food safety inspection that is targeted at addressing the limitations of current practice. This study evaluates whether the Barnes model can be effectively implemented into food safety regulatory practice. Design/methodology/approach – Training materials were created and provided to EHPs to support them interpreting and implementing the Barnes model in field trials. Field observations and interviews were then conducted to evaluate the efficacy and practicability of utilizing the Barnes model and to identify barriers to implementation. Findings – This pilot research found that EHPs were able to adopt the Barnes model into their practice, although implementation could be hampered by key barriers such as incompatible legislative frameworks, unsuited performance measurements for EHPs and lack of oversight from a governing body. Originality/value – The findings from this study will inform the future of food safety regulatory practice by determining that the Barnes model can be adopted and implemented by EHPs into their regulatory practice, setting the necessary foundations for further research on the effectiveness of the Barnes model as a health protection measure.</p

    This submission to the Department of Education’s Rapid Anti-Bullying Review focuses on the unique needs of Autistic Australians, who currently face distinct and severe challenges related to bullying. A collaboration between experts in linguistics, education, and psychology at La Trobe University and researchers at the Olga Tennison Autism Research Center (OTARC) informed this submission. Autistic students in Australia are much more likely to be bullied than their non-Autistic peers: the prevalence of bullying they experience is amongst the worst in the world. Autistic students in Australia also experience worse bullying than their non-Autistic peers: they are bullied more often, for longer, and more severely. Our submission demonstrates that this bullying has significant negative impacts on Autistic people, including poor mental health, reduced emotional wellbeing, increased rates of school refusal, and an elevated risk of suicide. Current anti-bullying approaches do not help Autistic people. Instead, they leave Autistic Australians exposed to harm and, in some cases, may even cause additional harm.Drawing on cutting-edge autism research and insights from the Autistic community, we make 14 evidence-based recommendations in order to promote National Anti-Bullying Standards that will help meet the dire needs of Australian Autistic students. </p

    Mercury in an Australian sclerophyll <i>Eucalyptus</i> forest and emissions from fuel reduction prescribed burning

    Environmental context: Understanding how mercury cycles through the environment is crucial for protecting ecosystems and human health. Our study is among the first to measure mercury concentrations in Eucalyptus forest soils and litter and estimate emissions from prescribed burns, addressing a significant gap in current knowledge. These new data enhance our understanding of mercury cycling in Australia and contribute to the global information on the biogeochemical cycle of mercury. Rationale: Research on mercury in Australian soils and litter is sparse. This study aims to address this knowledge gap by investigating mercury pools in soil and litter in a eucalypt forest in Victoria, Australia. Methodology: We analysed total mercury concentrations in O and A horizon soils, and twig, bark and leaf litter. Soil samples were collected from an area affected by a prescribed burn and unburned areas. Additionally, soil samples from the base of tree stems were taken in unburned areas. The organic matter content of all soil samples was also assessed. Results: In unburned soils, mean mercury concentrations at the base of tree stems, in the O-horizon and A horizon were 143 ± 61, 112 ± 71 and 56 ± 30 ng g−1 respectively. In burned soils, mean mercury concentrations in the O and A horizons were 91 ± 63 and 46 ± 19 ng g−1 respectively. Mercury concentrations in leaf, bark and twig litter averaged 71 ± 11, 21 ± 13 and 8 ± 4 ng g−1 respectively. The emission factor was estimated as 0.247 g Hg ha−1. Discussion: The studied sclerophyll forest represents a significant mercury reservoir. Burning did not significantly alter the mercury burden in soil; however, emissions of mercury from litter did occur. This finding underscores the need for more comprehensive research into mercury cycling in Australia and suggests that prescribed burning practices should account for potential mercury emissions.</p
