Inheritance and covariation of specialised metabolites among cannabis chemotypes
The major phytocannabinoid bioactives produced by Cannabis sativa L. (cannabis) are Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD), with many minor phytocannabinoids (PCs) also thought to contribute to the pharmacological efficacy. Cannabis typically segregates into three main chemical phenotypes (chemotypes) based on their Δ9-THC/CBD ratio, a highly heritable trait determined by the segregation of two closely related berberine bridge-like enzymes that perform stereoselective oxidative cyclisation on the geranyl moiety of cannabigeroid intermediates. Apart from a small number of metabolome-wide association studies, few attempts have been made to either understand metabolite coupling among Δ9-THC/CBD chemotypes or to examine the inheritance of alternative biomarkers that could be used to discriminate chemotype. Here, we examined the metabolomes of 108 F2 segregants derived from a cross between a Δ9-THC-predominant chemotype I and a CBD-predominant chemotype III plant. Although segregation of the Δ9-THC/CBD ratio followed Mendelian genetics expectations, covariation in the inheritance of minor PCs, including cannabichromene (CBC)-types, indicated changes in cannabinoid synthase product specificity among chemotypes. In addition, several non-PC related metabolites were identified that may serve as potential biomarkers for chemotype prediction. These data have important implications for the pre-breeding and selection of cannabis chemovars and highlight the need to adopt metabolic engineering strategies to optimise PC production.</p
Intern-vention: exploring commencing students’ expectations regarding employability related skills and experiences
Producing job-ready graduates is a pressing priority for higher education providers, complicated by the changing world of work and increasingly diverse student cohorts. Student expectations directly influence retention, engagement, and success at university, making it important to understand what students expect regarding job readiness. This study investigated students’ expectations of where and how they would engage with employability-related activities during their university experience. Data were collected from 1,584 Australian students after enrolment but before commencing their degrees. Students were surveyed about expectations for employability activities and skill development, including what they believed would be embedded in the curriculum and what they would pursue independently. Results indicated most participants expected employability activities (such as placements) to be partly their responsibility but also anticipated some opportunities embedded within the curriculum. In contrast, a majority expected employability skill development (such as communication and organisational skills) to be fully integrated into standard coursework. Further analyses revealed that expectations varied according to demographic and educational factors. These findings can assist universities to better align, support, or manage student expectations around employability-related learning. By doing so, institutions may enhance student experience and outcomes, while contributing to the development of more career-ready graduates.</p

Queering Criminology and the Periphery
In recent times, the emergence of Queer Criminology has drawn criminological attention to the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in criminal justice contexts. This movement of scholarship and activism, however, has largely emerged in the Global North. Its epistemological, conceptual, and political foundations remain firmly situated in the Global North, drawing heavily on LGBTQ and queer theorising and politics, which are products of the European and American academy, developing in response to specific concerns encountered within those contexts. The field also relies largely on Anglo-European conceptualisations of sexuality and gender and particularly on identity categories formulated within these contexts. Moreover, Queer Criminology is positioned clearly within the discipline of criminology, which has contributed to the perpetuation and expansion of colonial regimes throughout the Global South. Thus, Queer Criminology aligns closely with the criminologies, theoretical conceptualisations, and political movements of the Global North. The emergence of Southern Criminology, then, offers an opportunity for Queer Criminology to critically interrogate its epistemological, conceptual, and political foundations and the policies and reforms that develop from it. It allows us to reflect on whether Queer Criminology is relevant to and can speak to the criminal justice-related concerns of sexuality- and gender-diverse people in the Global South.This chapter undertakes this task. By setting Queer Criminology and Southern Criminology into conversation, it provides a critique of Queer Criminology’s positioning within the abovementioned dynamics and allows us to consider the implications of such critiques. The chapter first utilises southern theorising to develop a critique of Queer Criminology and queer politics. Then, drawing from empirical research on gay dating app-related victimisation in India, the chapter illuminates the importance of engaging with the provocations of Southern Criminology in queer criminological thought on such victimisation.</p
Recovery of cannabinoids from <i>Cannabis sativa</i> flowers using modifier/water leaching method
In Press - Pre-proof available available: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.seppur.2025.136141 Abstract:Cannabis sativa L. is a recognised medicinal plant containing a diverse array of phytocannabinoids, which are largely responsible for cannabis' therapeutic efficacy in treating psychiatric syndromes, chronic pain and epilepsy. The global market for cannabinoid products is rapidly expanding, necessitating high throughput and sustainable cannabinoid extraction processes to meet this growing demand. Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is a superior candidate for industrial cannabinoid isolation but there are still many knowledge gaps regarding its application in drug-type cannabis chemotype and minor cannabinoids recovery. This study filled these gaps by developing an efficient and scalable leaching method to recover cannabinoids from drug-type cannabis flowers using green modifier/water leaching solutions. The impacts of different cannabis forms (i.e., fresh (primarily acidic forms) and heat-treated (primarily decarboxylated forms)), modifier/water systems (i.e., ethanol/water and methanol/water), modifier contents (i.e., 0–100 % v/v) and solid-to-liquid ratios on the leaching efficiency of 15 of the most common cannabinoids were investigated. Results showed that leaching conditions of either ≥50 % v/v ethanol/water or ≥ 70 % v/v methanol/water were required for the efficient recovery of ∆(Jin et al., 20209)-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A (∆Jin et al. (2020)9-THCAA), the primary cannabinoid in fresh cannabis, while either ≥70 % v/v ethanol/water or ≥ 80 % v/v methanol/water leaching solutions were required for complete recovery of ∆(Jin et al., 20209)-tetrahydrocannabinol (∆Jin et al. (2020)9-THC), the predominant cannabinoid in decarboxylated cannabis. The stability of cannabinoids in alcohol/water leachates for up to 40 d was also evaluated, the results of which suggests that alcohol/water leachates containing ∆(Jin et al., 20209)-THCAA required rapid processing to the next liquid-liquid extraction stage or cool-storing to enhance its stability in solution. Furthermore, this study successfully utilised Hansen Solubility Parameters (HSPs) to predict the experimental leaching trends of cannabinoids, indicating that HSPs is an effective tool for screening alternative solvent systems for cannabis processing.</p

Fitness integrated with technology approach to teaching biomechanics and STEM in a high school setting: a case report
Many high school students withdraw from physical education (PE) and sport science majors (including biomechanics) due to anxiety about science and mathematics. In some situations, it is not necessarily what STEM subject is taught but how it is introduced and what pedagogy is applied by the teacher. In high school, students who study PE are often required to understand basic biomechanical principles. Initial research supports the positive effects that action-based and game-based pedagogy has on students’ attitudes toward the field of biomechanics; however, quantitative evidence remains sparse. This is particularly true when wider STEM integration is considered. The purpose of this study was to quantify high school students’ (n = 14) perceptions toward biomechanics after participating in a Fitness Integrated with Technology (F.I.T) and a tactical games approach (TGA) over 16 lessons (eight weeks in total). Professional development workshops were used to help the teacher develop pedagogical content knowledge to teach biomechanics using the F.I.T and TGA approach. As a primary outcome measure, the Student Assessment of Learning Gains (SALG) instrument was used pre and post the F.I.T. theoretical and practical lessons while variables including the feasibility, practicality, and challenges of applying F.I.T. was used as a secondary measure.
